What leads a person to believe Tywin is one of the greatest players and strategists in Westeros?
it baffles me because he screwed up his kids, made 4 kingdoms (dorne, the north, the riverlands, the vale) despise him and his family, put his own son on trial, ensured that his family was cursed because he broke guest right. everyone will blame his children for the extinction of house lannister but he put them in that situation
People think Tywin is some great player because they mistake ruthlessness and immediate results with political genius. Killing Elia and her children, destroying house Reyne the way he did, ending the war against the North through such trickery, all garnered immediate results and displayed Tywin’s ruthless nature, and our (or at least some people’s) patriarchal monkey brains think that’s amazing. Never mind that he, respectively, made an enemy of the one house that knows it can win a war against dragons, nevermind your every day army, or that destroying one of your biggest bannermen so ruthlessly pretty much kills any kind of loyalty there might have been in the Westerlands, or that winning a war through breaking one of the most sacred social rules will cause arguably even more chaos than the war ever did. Tywin does these incredibly stupid things in a cool and collected manner, so they’re considered Genius and BadassTM.
Tywin isn’t nearly as smart as either he or the fandom think he is. He unnecessarily escalated the initial conflict with House Stark by ravaging the lands of an entirely different Lord Paramount, solely because Hoster Tully was Catelyn’s father. It was a stupid decision, motivated by his fear of being disrespected and of being a laughingstock. Tywin could easily have defused the situation by appealing directly to Robert. Ned might be Hand and Robert’s friend, but the Crown is in serious debt to Tywin. He could have simply threatened to call in the loan immediately and King FatBob would have caved.
However, Tywin’s pride was hurt and he over-reacted based on his personal fears. He is so ruthless BECAUSE he fears being a laughingstock, of not being respected. It is the reason why he hates Tyrion - having a dwarf son made Tywin a laughingstock among his peers and he hated it.
I actually find him a fascinating character because of this fear of his. He is nowhere near as rational as he thinks he is.
And he became a laughing stock when he died. As his corpse quickly decayed and became bloated, leaking fluids, smelling horrid. His cheeks sunken and his lips cracked giving the impression of him laughing to his own private joke. And as soon as he is dead his legacy quickly crumbles with his children fighting amongst themselves and some of them (Tyrion and Cersei) vow to kill each other. As Genna said in ADWD “It’s true what they said about Tywin smiling at his funeral?”
Such a fitting end for him - that, and the fact that he died on the latrine. I’ll never not find that funny. The feared Twyin Lannister shot dead whilst taking a crap - GRRM is fond of poetic justice.
Don’t forget how his bowells gave away as he was shot and he shat himself. Truly Martin was in full savage mode.
Tywin was literally and figuratively full of crap. His legacy went to shit because he was too ruthless (and that vicious ruthlessness had its root in his fear of ridicule - a fear that was the legacy of his father who became a laughingstock and was perceived as a weak lord).
I love how Tywin’s legacy is contrasted with Ned’s. Tywin might have been successful in the short term, but it is Ned’s legacy that will win out - through his children. I still hope that Tywin’s line will die out - and that the Lannister name will be continued through a cadet branch.
