In case anyone's looking for a hopefully fun way to get their body moving, here's my second Fantasy Walking Tour, twenty minutes in Corus.
sometimes i think about the progression of Tortall heroines' power levels and am super amused
Alanna: I have an incredibly powerful Gift of magic, a magic sword granted to me by the Old Ones, and the blessing of the Goddess herself
Daine: oh yeah? Well I have Wild Magic that allows me to sense and communicate with mortal and Immortal animals, heal them, and transform into any animal I choose. I am also a Demigod myself, the daughter of Weiryn, God of the Hunt, was once granted additional powers by the Graveyard Hag, and am under the protection of the Badger God. Keladry: ...i have autism

you wanna see some badass shit from the early 20th century?? The LumiĆØre brothers created the first full color photograph⦠in fucking 1903! So these dudes dyed potatoes (in red, blue, and green), mashed them down into just pure fuckinā starch, and used these dyed potato starches as filters to block out/let in certain wavelengths of light. They coated one side of a glass plate with the starches and sensitized the other side with a mixture of gelatin and light sensitive materials (silver nitrate) and loaded these plates in their cameras.. This is a really simple explanation of the process and I may have missed some things A few of my favorite autochrome photos:
that last one is literally a LOOK
yes!
but lets not forget sergei prokudin-gorskiy, who developed a similar process in 1902, published in 1903 and then toured russia to take hundreds of color photographs:
AND the guy developed color slide processing as well. as a person fairly familiar with modern b/w processing at home, but never EVER stepping into color (negatives or slides) territory, iād say, BAMF to the highest degree.Ā
Here are a few more Prokudin-Gorskiy / Gorskii shots, and a reminder once again that these arenāt recently colourised BW images but original colour photos taken about 120 years ago. Many colourised pics donāt look this good. Some modern colour pics donāt look this good (as I know all too well. āDelete image Y/N? Y!ā)

If you've ever wanted Tamora Pierce Tortall book covers on your wall, now's your chance! Joyce Patti just launched her website where you can buy prints of her work. Yes, I spent way too much money.
She has 11 covers for sale, First Test isn't available because the original copy was sold to a gallery years ago, but she mentioned possibly tracking it down or recreating it.
Right now I think she's just shipping in the US, but she's looking at international options.
It seems like a one woman operation, so it might take some time to actually get shipped.
She's been working on this for a long time, so give her some love if you can!
im just so happy i live in a time period where actual meaningful biological transition is possible. even if we lose rights or the ability to exist in public, nothing can turn back the clock on that, and just by having any sort of access to that our lives are made immensely better. millions of our sisters throughout history would never have dreamed of a day where they could have what HRT does for us.
please don't lose the plot of this. if you're a trans person on HRT you're a living miracle, the dream of hundreds of millions of your ancestors. your lives are all deeply meaningful no matter what anyone says.
A prayer by Kalonymus b. Kalonymus ben Meir that appears in his poem הפר ××× ××××, ×× Sefer Even Boįø„an (§13), describing the author's wish t
Cursed be the one who announced to my father: āItās a boy!"... ...How could he twist the course of the stars so much? How could he have erred so in his astrology? A lying tongue, a foolās mouth it had given him For he foolishly transformed justice to poison He altered the law and transposed the lines
Oh, but had the artisan who made me created me instead ā a worthy woman... ...I would say "how lucky am I"
Father in heaven who did miracles for our ancestors with fire and water... ...Who would then transform me from a man to woman? Were I only to have merited this being so graced by goodness...
What shall I say? why cry or be bitter? If my father in heaven has decreed upon me and has maimed me with an immutable deformity then I do not wish to remove it. the sorrow of the impossible is a human pain that nothing will cure and for which no comfort can be found. So, I will bear and suffer until I die and wither in the ground. Since I have learned from our tradition that we bless both, the good and the bitter I will bless in a voice hushed and weak: blessed are you [HaShem] who has not made me a woman.
I think I'm gonna go lay down for a little while.
Daine the Wild Mage of the Immortals quartet, the original blorbo.

when two musicians sing into the same microphone and lean in very close to each other⦠like omg are you guys gonna kiss now to relieve the homoerotic tension?š³
THIS IS NOT ABOUT ONE DIRECTION I DONāT KNOW WHO THIS āHARRYā PERSON IS GO WATCH BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND CLARENCE CLEMONS KISS ON STAGE RIGHT NOW
op is the only valid person iāve ever met. everyone else needs to come to the light
Okay, but this is really important: Bruce Springsteen occupied this really weird place in music history. His songs were all from this pessimistic, nihilistic view of an America that had let him down:
Just like the anti-Vietnam War protest songs that we associate with the 1960s, or the early nihilism that spawned punk music in the 1970s. But he didnāt *sound* like a punk anarchist; he sounded like a country rock singer. When he released Born in the U.S.A. people completely misinterpreted (or possibly ignored) the lyrics in favor of the tone of the music.
Politicians used his music to promote their āMurica Yes! brand, and he had to literally explain that that was not what he was about. Heās over here asking when weāre going to have jobs and heathcare, not stanning the politicians who werenāt helping the people.
It was also kind of a big deal that he had an integrated band, because even as late as the 1980s music was still kind of segregated and MTV was straight up racist. They refused to play and promote black artists and then claimed that were no black artists in the first place. Michael Jacksonās record company had to threaten a boycott of their white artists to get MTV to play his Thriller video.
Plus, the first black/white interracial kiss on TV was in 1968 (OG Star Trek). Also it took us until the 70s to get sympathetic gay characters on screen, and the 90s to get gay characters to kiss onscreen. And all of those firsts were met with outrage.
So keep that in mind when you see Bruce Springsteen not just playing with an interracial band, but engaging in an interracial, gay kiss on stage repeatedly.
Passages from American Popular Music by Larry Starr and Christopher Waterman
I used to think that Bruce and Clarence kissing onstage was exuberance, showmanship, and telling racist homophobes to fuck off. Like, they picked up a certain kind of audience and went āRacist homophobes? Not in our house!ā And started the kissing then but then I actually looked it up and

It was a story where⦠we remade the city. We remade the city, shaping it into the kind of place where our friendship and our love for one another wouldnāt have been such an exceptional thing. - Bruce Springsteen
It wasnāt about showmanship or rejecting bigots or anything it was just. Damn right that was one of the loves of his life and damn right he was going to kiss him onstage
It gets me a little that Bruce has had a divorce, that heās been married twice, but he loved Clarence for the rest of Clarenceās life and will presumably love him the rest of his own
Clemons said in one interview. āBruce and I looked at each other and didnāt say anything, we just knew. We knew we were the missing links in each otherās lives. He was what Iād been searching for.ā In another version of the story, Clemons says āHe looked at me, and I looked at him, and we fell in love.ā
Iām having some emotions about it!
āHe was elemental in my life,ā Springsteen adds, āand losing him was like losing the rain.ā
Not just! I love you pure and deep and true but! I am going to love you like that in front of the whole damn world!
We have fewer narratives about taking risks and making statements for platonic love rather than romantic and supposedly it would be easier to downplay this onstage than romance and! They refused! They fucking refused! In front of hundreds of thousands of people, over the course of years! In the spotlight, in word and deed, I love you!
God Iām not okay about it
Now Iām mad that this is not among any of the things I was ever told about this artist.
I knew about this in general (& via all those fabulous photos), but this just adds even more beautiful context <3
Just to add to the pile: this was the cover of Springsteenās break-through album Born to Run, in 1975:
I mean, will you LOOK at this:
This was the pic chosen for the album cover from an extensive photoshoot, too. A few others:
Thereās a lot more online if you search. Theyāre all pretty amazing. But the photographer is right, the one chosen for the album cover just pops.
my favorite fantasy world is tortall
I think sotl is like the most iconic tortall quartet and protector of the small is definitely the most thoughtfully well written. but the immortals are the most indulgent by a mile. like this was the quartet written for the twelve year old who still lives inside tamora pierce with the handle animaluvr54 and a massive crush on her middle school english teacher. as a huge fan of the 2015 sci fi classic jupiter ascending im obviously v on board with this
I hate seagulls. Not all the time of course, when they flutter in the sky like white paper or float quietly on the shiny water and resemble beautiful plastic bathing animals. Then they are a natural part of the summer picture and you don't think much of them. Neither with hate nor love. But when they open their mouths and scream like sick souls you can look right down into their bloody shameless entrails. If a seagull has got hold of a fish head or a gut or some other filth and flies away with it in its beak, then the other seagulls pounce on her and scream "I want I want I want" and the result is that the filth falls into the water and sinks and none of them gets any pleasure from the filth. Seagulls have no sense of community. "I want I want I want." I dare not think which party they would have voted for if they had had the right to vote. Under such circumstances I say to myself; I'm glad I don't know a seagull personally. So that I would have to behave somewhat politely towards the person. I wouldn't have a seagull if you gave me one. If I had to choose a bird, I would say. Give me a waiter who chatters with his glasses. Hovering between the tables or coming. Pawing towards me. Gulls are known to stay together in pairs, probably their whole lives. They are known to be faithful to their partner, and we think that's nice. But I don't know, if I was married to a screaming, must-have, must-have partner. A screaming, gut-wrenching, fish-smelling partner, no matter how faithful she had been, I might have thought that it would have been just as good if she had found someone else. No. Give me a wife who smiles with her teeth. Standing at the station and happily comes. Running towards me. I mean, standing at the station and waiting when I get the train from Oslo or wherever I go. I have seen one Sunday in Lillesand harbor two seagulls that tried to rape a floating plastic can out between the piers in the middle of church time with children present. Seagulls behave like animals sometimes. As I said, quite often I hate seagulls. No, give me a dove that coos to its mate. I hate seagulls, but there are many things I love. For a long time I had the feeling when I met people that it turned out didn't hate or love the same things as me, and I thought that they must be crazy. I think many people still feel that way. Non-smokers for example who raise their children to be nasty little chewing gum smelling moralists who walk through the only smoking compartment on the train and say "ugh It smells like smoke here, smoke is dangerous, yuck." But as I said I hate seagulls for abovementioned reasons, but if I meet someone who loves seagulls and says so to me, or if I meet a non-smoker who thinks that smokers shouldn't have access to public hospitals or public railways but rather run after, for example, the Vestfold train, then I will try to look at that person with understanding. But it will not be easy. No.
