Does the fourth doctor have a consistent moral compass? I just assumed he got off on putting his companions through distressing situations
rtd's instagram post btw:
"no actor was ever approached to play the next doctor" ncuti gatwa literally regenerated into billie piper onscreen.
mr skull could you give us your thoughts on journeys end
Fine. You asked for it.
The bees are disappearing. The stars are going out. The walls between universes are breaking down. The earth has vanished from its place in spacetime, along with a handful of other seemingly random planets and a lost moon. The names David Tennant, Catherine Tate, Billie Piper, John Barrowman, Lis Sladen, and Freema Agyeman all appear in the opening credits for a finale that has been built up throughout season 4, a finale that prepares you for something sinister and forboding AND ITS A FUCKING DALEK SPACE BATTLE AGAIN! THE SAME THING WE DID IN OUR FIRST AND SECOND FINALE. WHAT IF LOGOPOLIS FUCKING SUCKED. but ohhhh NO! this time our dalek space battle has DAVROS! remember him from remembrance of the daleks I mean revelation of the daleks FUCK I mean GENESIS OF THE DALEKS? REMEMBER JACK HARKNESS? REMEMBER HARRIET JONES from the WORST POST REGEN EPISODE? REMEMBER SARAH JANE SMITH from THE 70S? REMEMBER ROSE TYLER? and martha jones is there too SEE.
how many times do we have to do daleks, Davies. How many times can we do daleks before the audience starts to question how the daleks can survive the time war but not the time lords. QUICK! look here's a scene where Rose gets huffy and says "who's SHE?" upon seeing Martha Jones! Heres a scene where Martha sees Rose and says "oh my god he FOUND you" as if she ever gave a shit about Rose! We have to drill into everyone's head that the doctors love for Martha didn't matter and he was just rebounding from ROSE! ITS BEEN ROSE ALL ALONG. We HAVE to bring back Rose even though she's going to have a significant cameo three specials later in the End of Time, a cameo thats supposed to be emotionally resonant to new fans! We HAVE to show David Tennant regenerating for shock value just for him to regenerate into David Tennant next episode and screw up the order of regenerations forever! We HAVE to have Rose sound relieved when she says "so youre still you" as if she didnt fall in love with the ninth doctor first, because we have to remind everyone that RTD hated Chris Eccleston and wants to pretend the ninth doctor never existed! Do you have any idea how often I had to hear my tenrose friend call Rose badass for her role in journeys end before I actually rewatched journeys end as an adult with media literacy to see that Rose does absolutely FUCK ALL. "Ohhhh but she carries Big Gun" does she do anything else? Or does she stand around quoting Rose Tyler Dialogue while carrying Big Gun before getting quietly packed away as if she were never there? Who CARES about fans of Rose Tyler who wanted her much-foreshadowed reappearance to actually mean something? Nostalgia makes big number go UP. The doctor didnt have to put Rose back where she started: there was clearly no plan for her reappearance except to hastily tie up the problem of tentwo! Dont you hate when a characters tragic and beautifully crafted exit is irreversibly fucked up and retconned because sad endings are too scawwy for Russell T Davies :( i sure hope Davies doesnt do the EXACT same thing to Donnas ending a decade later in a shitty ass gender essentialist nostalgia bait special!!!! Davros is here to wax poetic about the doctors destructive role in peoples lives even though he has zero personal stake in it!!! If I wanted to watch Davros lust for the doctor I could just watch genesis of the daleks! Why aren't I watching genesis of the daleks instead?? There's a whole returning cast who have very little to contribute to the plot because the day is actually saved by Donna cloning the Doctor and absorbing his mind! I hate tentwo. I hate tentwo with every fiber of my being. Every post about hating your friends boyfriend is actually about tentwo. Tentwo is the friends boyfriend I hate. The only thing tentwo is good for is for the doctor to display a staggering amount of self hatred by trapping him in Pete's World and using him to pair the spares with Rose. This is framed as a happy ending even though tentwo will almost certainly break up with Rose and commit suicide within four years, traumatizing her forever. The motif of Donna's specialness has been foreshadowed throughout the season and all it amounts to is basically that everything that makes her special is NOT about who she is, it's actually something that is a) completely out of her control b) stumbled upon by pure chance and c) killing her. Donna isn't special because of her personality or derring do or compassion, Donna can't be ALLOWED to be special! She has to have her memory wiped, have all of her character development reversed, and go back to hating herself! This is an excellent display of the doctors hubris and the perfect catalyst for Moffats thematically rich seasons, except this is framed as if it's harder for the doctor than it is for DONNA! Remember Martha's fiance? WHO CARES ABOUT HIM. let's retcon Mickeys ending so he marries Martha because WE ARE RACIST.
I really love Martha's subplot :)
fandoms purists have never watched doctor who and it SHOWS
These people haven't been hardened by a media property where half of the writers hate the other half's ideas and they duke it out with the shows cannon, there's a third half of the writers that ignore the rest and just do whatever they want anyway. And they've been doing this for 50+ years. The main characters home planet has been destroyed at least four times possibly more, there are entire spinoffs based on breaking cannon, the current show runner was basically killed in effigy on the show in the 7th doctors run (30+ years before he took the role lmao), the main characters backstory has been changed so much so often that one writer made an entire book to explain why it doesn't matter. IN 1999. We're simply on another level
'wah wah this was out of character i don't like the ship' lmao go listen to zagreus. what is canon but a massive fucking joke?
let me be doctor who showrunner I already have a journal filled with ideas, a love for storytelling, and no urge to cast david tennant

I wish bill could have met river. she’d have her grandad and her nan :)
bill would be like “HOW did you get her interested in you” and twelve would go “I'm just that cool 😎” and bill and river would say “no you're not” in unison
hello fellow twelveclara enjoyers. have you considered twelve tracing circles of gallifreyan into clara’s palm while telling her stories about his childhood

"I'd say I'm sorry but I'd do it again" "You betrayed me. You betrayed my trust. You betrayed our friendship. You betrayed everything I've ever stood for- YOU LET ME DOWN!" "Then why are you helping me?" "Why?... Do you think I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference?" "Chin up, shoulders back, let's see what we're made of. You and me." "Clara, I'm terribly sorry, but I am exactly what you deserve."
Hi thanks Dark Water twelveclara for punching me seven consecutive times in the throat
I saw someone say awhile back that you should think of Classic Who, especially the early stuff, less like a television show and more like a stage play. It was written at a time when television was still actively inventing itself, and that framing really clicked for me.
It explains why I don’t struggle with watching it the way some people do. I already work in theatre and spend a lot of time around low-budget community productions, so the pacing, the blocking, the heightened performances, it feels familiar rather than off-putting.
But the perspective also made me think about how many people avoid live theatre or older television in general because they can’t get past the special effects. I never quite know how to respond to that, because it seems rooted in an assumption that spectacle is the primary value of storytelling.
Limitations aren’t failures. They’re constraints, and constraints shape the art. When you can’t overwhelm an audience visually, you have to earn their attention elsewhere, through dialogue that carries weight, performances that are legible even from the back row, atmosphere that does the work of a thousand digital effects. There’s a reason so much early television feels theatrical. It had to be.
What’s being asked of the audience in those cases is different, too. It’s an invitation rather than a command. You’re not being bludgeoned into belief by realism or scale. You’re being asked to participate, to meet the story halfway, to accept a cardboard wall as a castle because the narrative and the performances are sincere enough to hold it up.
A cardboard set doesn’t break the illusion unless you expect the illusion to do all the work for you. There’s something beautiful about that shared agreement, the trust between creator and audience that says "we know this is artificial, and we’re choosing to believe in it anyway." It’s a reminder that storytelling doesn’t live in the budget or the effects pipeline. It lives in the willingness of people to imagine together.
