(I am currently a senior in high school, and this happened during my junior year. My school is very high ranking, so to say that they take academics seriously is an understatement. I am the complete opposite of that, so many funny things have happened to me at school.)
During junior year, all of the juniors are required to meet with their guidance counselor a certain number of times to get college planning stuff in order. These meetings were usually a month apart, sometimes more.
One day, I was sitting in my English class, watching The Blind Side. My friend turned to me and said, āugh Iām so pissed off we have our guidance meetings todayā. I completely forgot about it, so I started freaking out because my guidance counselor is a bit of a perfectionist, so if I didnāt have everything that I needed together, I would be screwed. I asked my friend what we needed for the meeting, and she said we only needed the list of colleges that we were thinking about applying to. Iām a procrastinator, so I hadnāt started picking schools yet. I decided to avoid my problems by focusing on the movie, and coming up with an excuse on why I hadnāt gotten a list together because I had a lot of time.
A few minutes go by, and the scene where Michael Ore is starting to get recognition by college recruiters comes up. I realized that this was my chance to write down some colleges to bring to the guidance meeting. I wrote down: LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Alabama, Tennessee, and Arkansas. I was so happy with my list, and I knew that it would save me from getting in trouble.
I am from a small, affluent town north of Boston, Massachusetts. Iām not dumb, but I certainly donāt put as much effort into school as I could, so I have a 2.9 gpa. I thought that my guidance counselor was going to have a heart attack when I brought that list of colleges in for the meeting. Popular colleges for graduates of my high school are Cornell, Brown, Harvard, UCLA, University of Chicago, University of Virginia, etc. He was confused at my list of schools, and I was confused at my list of schools because I knew nothing about them, so it was a pretty awkward meeting.
To make a long story short, The Blind Side saved my ass and basically decided my future.
I ended up applying to most of the schools on my original list (plus a few extras) and was accepted into 6 universities. And now I am heading off to the University of Alabama in the fall. Roll Tide!
