The Wolves Chapman 2020

Coach Neil:

The Wolves current coach. He works at a best buy, though is also in the reserves for the national guard, and is often known to be hungover or apathetic at practices. He served in either Afghanistan or Iraq.

Coach Patrick:

The Wolves former coach who is much beloved by the team, even after his departure. He moved away to take care of his sick mother, who has terminal breast cancer. 

Coach Mikhail:

The boys’ indoor soccer coach. He is a tough Eastern European man who the girls find to be both intimidating and a talented coach. He is rumored to have killed someone in the 80′s.

Coach Frank:

Both the team’s former coach and #25′s dad. The team characterize Frank as aggressive and intensely focused on the team. Even after he finished coaching, Frank was still very competitive watching the team from the side and focused on the Wolves winning.

Kevin:

#13′s older brother, out of high school and still living at home. He sees #11′s mother for therapy.

#7′s Dad:

#7′s Dad, who is separated from her mother, and owns a ski house. He is heavily implied to be a less than stellar father due to #7′s attitude towards it. 

#46′s Mum:

Just recently moved to town and lives in a yurt. She is a travel writer as well as a single mother, which has caused #46 to move around often. She is staying in town to care for her own mother.

#46′s Grandmother:

#46′s grandmother who both her and her mum live in a yurt with. She is not doing well, currently suffering from emphysema. 

Louise Peterson:

A friend/maybe (?) lover of #25 who goes to school with some the team, such as #13 and #11. She is known as a very alternative, outsider type of personality and for her intense musical performances.

Dan:

#7′s long term boyfriend. He and #7 started dating in high school and continued when Dan went to college on a soccer scholarship. They are very committed to each other, #7 saying she ‘fucking loves him’.

Social anxiety is an extremely common mental health disorder. It often begins to exhibit during tween/early teenage years and is characterized by extreme fear in unreasonable times, avoidance of social situations, and noticeably affected life patterns (Schneier 1030). It is essentially an extreme reaction to the body’s natural fight or flight response. Adrenaline rushes the brain during a S.A.D flare up, causing tension in the body, nervousness, and shaky breath. 

Another occasional effect of S.A.D is selective mutism. This occurs when the anxiety response is so extreme that the person affected loses the ability to speak. While this person can carry out full conversations among friends and family, during anxiety episode, they become selectively quite. This silence can seem rude or anti-social but it mostly stems “from feeling uncomfortable and afraid, not from being uncooperative, disrespectful, or rude” (Teens Health).

Anxiety can be a massively affecting disorder, but it is not without remedy. Some methods include therapy, distraction methods, and family and friend aid.

Nordic Hamstring Curl

How to do it:  Partner A kneels on the ground (on a pillow or foam pad for a softer surface) while Partner B secures his lower legs or ankles firmly in place.  Partner A begins leaning forward and controls the descent using his hamstring muscles on the backs of the thighs.  When you can no longer support your weight with your muscles, return to the starting position.  Or, you may fall forward to the ground, catching yourself in a push-up position.  Push back to the starting position and repeat the exercise.  At first, you may not go very low, and repetitions may be limited to 3-4 times; however, as you continue this exercise, you will gain strength to lower further to the ground with good control.

How many:  Each partner should do 3 sets of 3-8, or as tolerated.

Shuffle-Bump-Land

How to do it:  Partners begin standing side-by-side in an athletic stance.  At the same time, they side shuffle away from each other, around a cone (if you have one), and back toward the center.  They both hop into the air and gently bump shoulders.  Upon landing, focus on a soft landing, bending your knees, lowering your hips back and down, and keeping your chest up in a “ready-position”.  Pause briefly to absorb the landing and practice good mechanics.  Then side shuffle back around the cone and return to the middle to repeat the exercise.

How many:  Repeat 3 sets of 5-10 times, then switch sides for starting position so each partner shuffles both directions.

Sliding Save Drill

The key to this drill is getting down to the ground to grab and protect the ball. There are many in-game situations where the best option is to slide down and hold on to the ball, so this is a simple yet excellent drill to get used to prepare for those situations.

This drill can be done with a partner rolling the ball, but this version is a solo drill.

Put the ball about a foot outside of one of the goal posts and stand in the middle of your goal.

Once you are in position, quickly shuffle a few steps and dart towards the ball.

Once you are a few feet away, slide down, cradle the ball and pull it into your body.

Repeat this drill 10 or more times on both sides of the goal. You can also practice it with the ball closer or further away from you.

Wall Drills

Whatever kind of surface you can find -- a tennis hitting wall, the side of a recreation center, a warehouse or an indoor gym wall -- can be pressed into service for wall drills. Throw or kick the ball against the wall at varied heights and angles and then catch it. Work particularly on catching high balls with the fingers of both hands. Catch and toss the ball over and over, bending your arms only at the elbows. As you become more proficient, substitute a medicine ball for a soccer ball.

As of 2013, Plan B, an emergency contraception to be used in case of failure or lack of use of other contraceptive methods, became an over the counter non-prescription drug. In that same year, use of the drug among sexually active teenage women increased to 22% from 8% in a 2008 study (Rettner). 

An important note about Plan B is that it is NOT an abortive pill. It can’t stop an existing pregnancy, only stopping a non-fertilized egg from being fertilized by an ejaculation within 72 hours of ingesting the pill. It is a viable option for many teens who are not on birth control but are still sexually active to avoid an unwanted pregnancy. 

However, some teen girls still choose not use the pill after unprotected sex due to the social stigma surrounding it. Part of this stigma comes from misinformation as “only 37% of women aged 16 to 24 had learnt about emergency contraception at school or college” (FPA). Socially, fear of embarrassment can also drive young women away from getting Plan B. Among girls age 16-24, 52% said that they would be embarrassed to buy the pill themselves and 47% thought that taking Plan B would abort an existing pregnancy (FPA).

This confusion around Plan B keeps many women from buying the pill and shaming those who do.

Pad shaming. It’s a thing. Really. 

Pads, or sanitary napkins, are often considered as a sort of ‘starter’ for period products. The change to tampons or a menstrual cup is seen as a right of passage, just as a first period is, a sign of coming maturity. These options are valued for the freedom they provide and the supposed lack of hassle that comes with sanitary napkins. Outside of these factors, pads are sometimes viewed by those not using them as untidy and ‘gross’, compelling them to ‘pad shame’ the women who do. However, there are valid reasons to prefer pads to other feminine hygiene options.

For some, anxiety around the insertion and use of tampons keeps them from using the product. In an article on METRO, one woman says she was motivated to stick with pads because she had “worries about toxic shock syndrome” (Lindsay). For others, it’s about comfort or about culture practices. Whatever reason they have, women all around, of all ages, are choosing pads.

But the shame persists. Women who choose pads are treated as oddities, as well as viewed as more immature. They field questions such as ‘how old are you?’, ‘isn’t that unhygienic?’ and ‘isn’t it bulky?’ (Lindsay). 

Whatever a woman chooses, its her body, and her choice. It’s time to move past the stigma around pads.
