In the lost epic Aethiopis, attributed to Arctinus of Miletus, PENTHESILEA, queen of the Amazons and daughter of Ares, comes to Troy after Hector’s death to aid Priam. She fights with extraordinary skill, briefly turning the tide against the Greeks. In single combat she is slain by Achilles, who, according to later tradition, is overcome with remorse as she dies.
