Found a video of a girl showing off Diet Soda detector strips (if there's any diabaddies that see this and want it I can link them, they're super helpful), and half of the comments were "you're diabetic you should just be drinking water..." First of all, not only are you just wrong, but you seriously expect diabetics to just never enjoy themselves? Ever?.

Saw another comment under a video about type 1 saying "you did this to yourselves. you ate too much sugar and you got yourself into this situation." And it's just so funny because they're Wrong™️. Type one diabetes is autoimmune and fully hereditary, and not at all effected by diet.

I mean, I know the answer. It's diet culture. People on their fancy diets think they're a superior human being because other people are "unhealthier" than them, and they hear diabetes and think "big fat and lazy with a bad diet" and think they're allowed to walk all over them since they're so superior. Despite the fact that it's a completely false stereotype that doesn't apply to most diabetics.

Insulin isn't magical, you don't just take it and your blood sugar magically goes down and everything is all better. You need to take a specific amount of it. Non-diet sodas have enough carbs in them to equal another meal worth of insulin, so if you dose for a your meal, and someone gives you a non-diet soda when you expected a diet soda (0 carbs versus 30-65g carbs), it can really hurt you.

but also, contrary to your belief apparently, I'm literally type 1 diabetic and have been diagnosed since I was 5. my blood sugar has always played nicely with insulin and I can get away with correcting for a regular soda quickly and not experiencing many setbacks for it. insulin absorbs a lot quicker than 2-3 hours for me. as far as I'm concerned, yeah it's pretty magical for me personally. I did not know that this wasn't the case for other people because nobody ever told me that.

just because I've had diabetes for the majority of my life does not mean I know everything about it and I'm not going to pretend I do. with that being said, when I ask innocent questions to learn more about my own condition that results in other diabetics getting shitty with me and (indirectly) calling me ableist for not knowing as much about it as they do, that makes me really NOT want to ask questions about it.

Insulin stuffs sugar into fat cells, causing people to get fat, if there's too much of it. The overproduction of insulin is a response to slow-growing insulin resistance. Because sugar is a vital part of human energy, people who cannot easily process sugar due to insulin resistance and insulin over-response may crave sugar in order to have enough energy to function.

And now going back to the top point, I know exactly what video op is referring to and she made a different video a few weeks prior specifically about harmful comments to t1d’s and instead of getting the point, heaps of comments were basically to the effect of “but we can bully t2ds bc they brought this on themselves, they deserve to be mocked”. HUH. DO YOU HEAR YOURSELVES.

If you're the type of person who automatically assumes men are bad people, then I have news for you. That assumption isn't going to wait until I tell you I'm trans. You're going to—whether subconsciously or consciously—assume I am just a man, and even after I tell you I am a trans woman your perception of me will still be permanently altered.

Discriminatatory beliefs aren't going to wait for me to tell you my pronouns.

I grew up in Florida, where at the age of twelve I was a victim of terror campaigns telling adults that I was going to sexually assault their children in the bathrooms, specifically because of the reason that 'men are all evil.'

I went through way too much at the hands of those people to see practically every ""leftist"" online continuing to push that ideology. Unlearn it. Please. It directly affects us trans women, too.

I still, to this day, have internalized this ideology, and I cannot look at myself in the fucking mirror because I think to myself people see me as a threat, no one feels safe around me. As a direct result of 'all men are evil.'

Okay so. My room is very small and has a floor-to-ceiling window, which in combination make it near impossible to change without standing in front of said window (weird architectural choices, don't worry about it).

But since my brain is how it is my primary worry about having to strip in front of a window is other people being "forced" to see me naked!! Every single time I change I think "Hope nobody comes by at this inopportune time to see me naked and be offended by my body."
