Why is Mansfield Park your favourite?
Well, partially because so many people hate it, so I must love it harder in defiance of them all. But I do really like it.
For me, it's the Austen novel where all the characters feel the most realistic and human. The plot also is very character driven and doesn't rely on happenstance (P&P for example is full of coincidences). The scene where they are playing Speculation, the ball, the description of Portsmouth, everything is just masterfully written.
I love Fanny Price and I want to wrap her up in blankets like a burrito and give her some hot chocolate.
To be perfectly honest, my favourite is either Mansfield Park or Northanger Abbey. I love the satire of NA, but I think my heart is really with MP. And somehow, the fact that I hate the ending might make me like it more? It's a brave ending. I think Mansfield Park is Jane Austen's only tragedy, even if she threw us a described happy ending.
