big fan of repetition in poetry. like hell yeah say that shit again
yeah i turned your boyfriend into an unreliable narrator. sorry. yeah, he's exaggerating aspects of the story to cast himself in a better light. he's obscuring the narrative he doesn't want to think about. he's misrepresenting others to further his own ends. yeah, i think he's doing it as some sort of emotional defence mechanism. his story cannot be trusted. sorry.
Welcome to the 2023 Couples of Classic Literature Tournament!
I was inspired both by the many character/ship tournaments already out there (namely; @2023himbotournament, @powerpolyculeshowdown, and @bisexual-monarch-tournament) and by my own recent re-reading of Pride & Prejudice.
Some rules and guidelines;
- I am using the term 'couple' loosely; Pairs who aren't technically couples (ex; Dorian Gray & Lord Henry) and pairs of friends (ex; Charlotte Lucas & Elizabeth Bennett) are also welcome!
-The term 'pair' is also being used loosely; trios, quartets, quintets, etc are welcome too
- Submit as many pairs as you like, but please only submit each one once
- It shouldn't be too much of an issue with this particular theme, but I'll say it anyway; only fictional characters, no real people (as fun as a historical couple tournament would be, this is not that)
- There will be either 16 or 32 slots depending on how many submissions I receive, pairs will be chosen based on popularity (meaning; how many submissions I receive for them or a preliminary poll).
Submissions will be open until March 3rd

Look guys, it's not that hard.
Tumblr???
can you reblog this
yes
no
I feel so attacked right now...
obsessed with this article title
Hey Jonny, what do you do when you feel uninspired or not motivated? Like, you have dozens of ideas in your mind, maybe you really want to write them but you're distracted or not in the right mood or something? I guess there are two ways of doing this: either you pull a Stephen King and force yourself to sit down and churn out a set amount of words/pages/whatever and at some point you find your groove again. Or you look at the wall and have a long hard think and then possibly fall asleep while waiting for the right mood to come back? I understand the need to refuel with other media (games, movies, tv, books, etc), but.. in short, how do you get out of a block?
I mean, to be real, there are two answers to this, depending on how close I am to a deadline.
If I'm not close to a deadline it's resting and recharging. If my brain is crunchy (wrung out) it needs time off - I prefer grindy repetitive computer games combined with personality-driven nonfiction podcasts with friendly voices (A More Civilized Age is a current favourite). If it's empty (drained) I like to try to fill it with media I wouldn't normally consume - at the moment I'm doing a lot of buying old or weird Blu-rays second hand at my local CEX. I don't always get on with them, but they always give my brain something to chew on. I repeat these until the block passes or a deadline approaches (usually the latter).
If I have a deadline I just write the thing. I know that sounds like simplistic bullshit but honestly when you've been doing it for a long time you just get the knack for squeezing it out of your mind like toothpaste. It's not particularly fun, and you can always tell which stuff you've written like that, but the weird thing is no-one else can. People will point at something you know you just forced from your burned-out brainscape at 3am and say it's some of your best work. And they'll be right.
At the end of the day, my big point is that how inspired or blocked you are when you write something has surprisingly little impact on its quality, so the important thing is to find your own balance and methods to maintain your wellbeing. Every writer is different - go figure out what works for you.
i love you tragic heroes i love you pyrrhic victories i love you characters that were doomed from the start i love you characters that can never really go home

not writing, not not writing, but a secret third thing
letting my stories spin around my head like a microwave
currently
So my problem with most ‘get to know your character’ questioneers is that they’re full of questions that just aren’t that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.) Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.
If I’m doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought I’d share the ones that get me (and my students) good results:
What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)
What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)
What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)
Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory)
What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.)
Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)
Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)
Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)
What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.)
What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)
ask me stuff if you like.
Reblogging for my fellow writer friends. Gotta say, I like this list way better than those other ones.
BOOK OF THE DAY:
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Amazon: 4.2
Goodreads: 3.95
Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 is poetic. The title, Fahrenheit 451 symbolizes the temperature at which paper burns. This minor detail holds the premise of this dystopian novel.
Guy Montag is a fireman in a world where literature is in danger of extinction. Television is glorified and books are the source of all unhappiness and chaos. Traditionally speaking firemen usually banish fire, but in Montag’s society, firemen start fires to burn books. Every printed book, as well as the house in which they are concealed in, must be obliterated. Escorted by helicopters, and equipped with deadly hypodermic, The Mechanical Hound of the Fire Department takes their job lethally serious. They are ready to hunt down any individual who defies the rules to conserve and read books.
Back at home, Montag has a standard life. He has a wife named, Mildred, who is obsessed with television. He retreated home with a clear mind and never questions his actions. One day he meets an interesting young neighbor, Clarisse. She becomes responsible for introducing him to a time, where books were vital: the past and the future. She teaches him the significance of ideas in books, as opposed to the senseless act of watching television. This is where Bradbury shines. His commentary on the censorship of literature is straightforward but unique. In Montag’s world trivial information is accepted, whereas knowledge and ideas are an evil. Fire Captain Beatty explains it best:
“Give the people contests they win by remembering the words to more popular songs…. Don’t give them slippery stuff like philosophy or sociology to tie things up with. That way lies melancholy.”
Ultimately Montag questions his actions and profession when his wife puts herself in danger and Clarisse mysteriously disappears. He does the unthinkable: he begins to hide books.
The beauty of Bradbury’s prose is found within the questions he indirectly raises: Why is literature important? is it of any danger? How does it influence our minds?
Some may say that Fahrenheit 451 is outdated, but the truth is that uttering such statement is narrow-minded. Fahrenheit 451 is less about how technology is infiltrating our lives, but more about Western society’s blind faith in the media and government. The symbolism in this book is pure and grandiose. Reminiscent of George Orwell’s 1984, Bradbury created a world where the mind is caged. No original ideas are consumed or fed; society is dormant and submissive. Ray Bradbury’s vision is prophetic and poetically satirical as well as melancholic.
If you are a lover of literature, this book will puncture your heart. It is not far from the truth, which can be distressing at moments. Unlike other dystopian societies in literature, Bradbury’s novel has become a historical act; it is one of the truer book in science fiction and life.
