the free ham sandwich scene is all fun and games until you actually think about it for a bit. and then it is very sad

the implication that susie went to a free food event—something more so targeted at those who cannot get food as easily themselves—and ate so many sandwiches that she got banned from all future days like that.

if we put on our thinking caps for 5 seconds we can infer this means she very likely does not get fed enough at home. from her bland room design, to her avoidance of talking about her home life and going home, she seems to be very neglected by her family. purposefully. this could also explain her acting out, as:

1. hunger spikes stress hormones and makes glucose levels fall, resulting in an emotional overlap which causes a fight or flight response, which can make you significantly more anxious, irritable, and all around reactive

2. acting out could be her way of desperately grasping at the attention she’s constantly denied—the attention a child needs. starting fights and threatening others gets people to pay attention, and maybe even notice what’s going on if they actually looked enough (though, obviously no one did)

susie is a victim of child abuse. don’t forget that.

Children will often eat anything they can to get whatever sort of nutrients they need, so yeah the susie eating chalk thing is kinda funny, but gets kinda sad when you realize it's a neglected kid with pica.

Yep. Her avoidance about home life, and talking about how her family would always end up moving away when she made any friends, was a huge red flag. At first I wondered if it could be a foster home situation, but that doesn't quite fit.

It is a possibility that Susie making friends would cause them to move away because the other families would catch on to how underfed Susie was. They may be under the poverty line and/or trying to avoid Child Protective Services. Susie's avoidance and previous bully status also seems to indicate some level of abuse/neglect going on. Plus, when she was sitting alone and crying, Toriel was the one to comfort her. She mentions that memory to Kris, but never mentions a single good thing her parents ever did for her.

This is overall really sad. I really hope Toriel or somebody else adopts her by the end of the game.

Yep! The best way to combat AI right now is to lament about how much it SUCKS. Because it really does. AI "assistants" are near useless, character ai is predatory, and Image AI can barely manage words on the front of a store. There are many reasons why AI is bad, ranging from neurological deterioration, to the environment, to copyright and protection of artists. However, the nutjobs that insist upon AI don't care about any of it. You wanna make them care? Complain about how useless it is and how much it sucks (to your coworkers and higher-ups). Eventually (and it probably won't take long), others will start complaining with you, and maybe that will get them to care.
