I-I actually saw someone say this today: Jensen said something about the show being around for 14 seasons because of the two brothers. This we know isn’t true, because it was on the brink of cancellation up until the point where Misha came on in season 4. Kripke himself said that he didn’t sleep well at night until Misha came on the show, because their ratings were finally good. J & J just never give Misha the credit that he deserves. --- My eyes have been opened and I can't stop laughing.
Ratings for season 2 and 3 were very good as you can see here. Ratings did not “finally get good” in season 4, they actually lost one milion regular viewers by the end of season 4. Kripke never said that ratings got better because of Misha because it didn’t, he only said Misha saved the angel storyline because there was a chance that fans would hate it as much as they did the Leviathan storyline. Fans spent the summer of 2017 preparing to hate the Jack Kline storyline but Alexander Culvart saved that storyline and Jack became an instant fan favorite.
If Supernatural was in danger of cancellation, it would be because they lost their lead star, Jared. Shows rarely survive when they lose their lead, and when they do they limp along for one or two more seasons while fans and critics lambast them for getting worse and worse, like these shows. Jared recently admitted that he once had planned to leave the show and met with a lawyer to break his contract without getting sued by WB. Why do studio lose their shit if a lead star leaves before the show is syndicated? Because millions and millions of dollars.
For a single season, CW spends at least $50 million developing several shows (150 scripts, 30 pilots) that only 6% will be aired (link). Then only 30% of the pilots will make it past the first season (link). So a good year means 3 shows survived the first season without getting cancelled . CW’s track record is 30% of the first season survivor will go on to crawl toward the season 4 finishing line. (link) If you’re doing the math that means an average of ONE show from CW’s $50 million dollar pilot season has lasted long enough to be syndicated and finally make some profit for the studio & network (details).
Is it any wonder that young actors like Jessica Alba, Jared Padalecki, Tom Welling who are inexperienced in leading a show became stressed, depressed, and unhappy? They are under enormous pressure to make back $50 million dollars for their network. Jared’s mental illness and the subsequent breakdown in season 3 was when Kripke started to lose sleep because if Jared leaves the show before it could be syndicated then Kripke, Singer, and WB will be financially screwed. Worse, the writer’s strike happened during season 3, shortening it from 22 episodes to 16. They need 88 episodes to be syndicated which is supposed to happen in season 4 but now delayed to season 5, which makes the network very unhappy that they have to commit to spending money on a show for another year. It would be like a college student taking 5 years instead of 4 years to graduate and the parents have to spend another $10,000 just for their spawn’s room and board.
There was much speculation in the fandom why Kripke went to see Jared before season 5 filmed. Remember at the time Jared’s breakdown in season 3 was kept secret, none of us knew. Whatever Kripke said to Jared, season 5 filming started without a hitch. The 6th episode (”I Believe Our Children Are Our Future”) is the much needed 88th episode. After episode 92 aired on Nov 12, 2009, it was announced that SPN was syndicated and TNT aired reruns the following January. Season 5′s viewership were lower than season 3 & 4 but that didn’t matter because of $$$yndication! Hooray! We are $$$aved!
Misha/Cas is irrelevant to ratings, Nielsen ratings have shown that (example here). Misha’s Q - popularity score was last measured during season 8 by Marketing Evaluation, Inc and it was too low among the general audience and Misha’s status has been jerked around before and since then. Misha went from guest (season 4) to regular (season 5 & 6) to guest (season 7 & 8) to regular (season 9 - 12) and back to guest (season 13) Don’t Misha’s minions find that status whiplash even a little bit strange? For somebody whom minions claim “saved” SPN from cancellation, why would his status get carelessly jerked around so much?
The only actor that “saved” Supernatural from cancellation is Jared Padalecki staying on the show because he is the lead actor playing the lead protagonist. Most shows get cancelled when they lose their lead actor.
Honestly Jensen did the funniest thing by choosing not to have a cockles panel. Jared’s not going to be at a few cons and they celebrated… imagine this not working out in their favor? It’s going to be so funny to see how they’re going to try to pretend they don’t care 😂 Jensen who famously hates solo panels would rather be alone than with Misha, and chooses R2 over him…
He’ll probably talk about Jared the whole time anyway 😂
It's already hilarious watching them act as if they're happy about getting an "uninterrupted Jensen." If that's the highlight of a con for you, what a sad way you look at entertainment. 😂😂😂
The thing is Jensen is great on his own, he just prefers when Jared is there.
And while I don’t personally think he hates M, I don’t think he likes him much either. He never brings him up organically, it’s always got to be forced by cockles stans, and even then Jensen often ignores it and talks about Jared.
There’s a lot of signs that he doesn’t trust him and says fans should take what he says with a pinch of salt. I can’t imagine he’s ever been happy with the disrespect M has shown about J2’s show and I think M being caught out by his own stans at Purcon has hopefully put some much needed boundaries back in place. Unfortunately, there will never be a complete distancing as Jensen will always be professional for the genuine fans but I’m hoping he’s done with thinking he has to appease M’s fetishisers who aren’t even genuine fans of his or the show.
I like it when Jensen has a solo panel and he goes on a bit of a ramble about things with his answers and only ends up getting through like three questions. I feel like that's when you find out more about him, when he's talking about music he likes or actors he admires. It's nice to see that more.
Of course panels with him and Jared are always going to be the heart of every convention, and are always the most fun. But in solo panels, both of them are passionate about their show and the industry, and give answers some real thought. That's why we keep coming back to them.
With Mishap around, you don't get that because he's always ready to interrupt a story with some lewd comments that don't add anything good. I get the impression that he's not listening to what's being said to contribute so much as trying to jump in with whatever he's thinking to draw attention back to himself. It's like a seagull waiting for the perfect moment to swoop in, steal your food and ruin a nice day.
It's not a conversation like when Jared and Jensen finish each other's sandwiches sentences or add more context to what the other is saying. That's not interrupting for the sake of it; that's enriching a discussion.
Something happened at Purcon which continued on from JiB, and I think Jensen's last bit of patience may have frayed. He's reclaiming Supernatural from hellers and bringing it back to being a show about brothers hunting monsters and not some fanfic romance story between characters who weren't in the show. Hellers aren't asking leading questions about the canon Dean or Cas are they.
And he doesn't want to be exposed to that situation again like Purcon.
So, "Jenmish" panels have faced their demise thanks to Mishap and his fans. Whoops.
And Jensen is absolutely going to bring up Jared unprompted. Because he always does.

I never liked the idea of SuperWhoLock. Doctor Who, you should leave that poor show out of this. The Super only meant "Destiel" and the Lock only meant "Johnlock" and both were treated as true endgame. Then the shows ended the way the creators intended...no secret episode for Sherlock & no reciprocated Destiel

Come to think of it has Jensen ever done a panel with just Mark S or Jim B? Those might be good ones for him to consider for the future. They were just as important supporting characters as Castiel (more important in my mind for sure).
He has a lot of other options he can go with to continue avoiding Misha. I’m sure he’ll invite members of the VR cast soon as well that he can do the main panel with. There’s also really no reason why he shouldn’t be able to at least do the Gold Panel as a solo one. He wants to be an A list leader right?

My biggest issue with Misha Collins, aside from the slurs and racism and sexual harassment, is that he feels so comfortable profiting off of queerness when his knowledge around it doesn’t go beyond surface level pandering.
Besides the fact that he doesn’t seem to understand that Castiel can’t possibly be gay because he isn’t a man but a genderless entity, which would make his relationships queer not gay; the worst offence was his fake coming out as bisexual for attention and monetary gain. I saw he made a post supporting trans people, made it free on YouTube. I want to believe it is from the heart. Maybe it is. Right now in the US and UK many rights are being stripped away for trans people. But it feels tainted even if it is meant in earnest

ITV chairman Andy Cosslett was too scared to buy the rights. And Amazon's Siena Pakington continued that. It wasn't market research, it was the all powerful Jared that stopped it being able to be watched in the UK 😂😂
Meanwhile, Walker only just got a streaming home in the UK a couple of weeks ago so Jared unfortunately used all his industry sway to stop Jensen's project and his own was forced to run for four seasons on its own merit, even without an international market.
