I am such a huge horse nerd and I apologize. :( But I’m really tired of seeing girths that are halfway down a horse’s stomach. This may not be interesting to anyone who is not me, but I like to draw fancy saddles and ridiculously long shanks on bits. Also, horses are the only animal I can draw, so I take advantage of that.

The middle horizontal part goes in the mouth. That middle part of the bit that looks like an upside-down “U’ is called the "port” (hence the name “high port”), and it’s meant to go on the horse’s tongue. The bigger the port, the stronger the bit (I.e., you put more pressure on the horse’s mouth when you pull the reins). The gentlest bits don’t have ports; they have a joint in the center, which makes them a “snaffle”

The chain on the curb bits in my original post is called a curb chain or curb strap, and it goes under the chin. It can make a bit stronger (i.e., puts on more pressure) by tightening on the horse’s chin when the bit is pulled. They’re typically used with curb bits (with some exceptions).
