Two definitions of understanding. Everything is understood when nothing nonsensical remains. Nothing is understood that is not construed.

A word, so long as it's not absorbed without remainder into a sense, 'remains' essentially extended 'between' other words, stretching to touch them, though not merging with them: and that's language as 'body'.
Jean-Luc Nancy

Philosophy is not the reflection of a pre-existing truth, but, like art, the act of bringing, truth into being.
Maurice Merleau-Ponty

The life of Spirit is not the life that shrinks from death and keeps itself untouched by devastation, but rather the life that endures it and maintains itself in it. It wins its truth only when, in utter dismemberment, it finds itself.
G.W.F. Hegel

In 'Being and Time', the term "hermeneutics" is used in a 'still' broader sense, "broader" here meaning, however, not the mere extension of the same meaning over a still larger area of application. "Broader" is to say: in keeping with that vastness which springs from originary being. In 'Being and Time', hermeneutics means neither the theory of the art of interpretation nor interpretation itself, but rather the attempt first of all to define the nature of interpretation on hermeneutic grounds.

Hans-Georg Gadamer

Hermeneutics is the art of agreement.

Of late, the scientific and philosophical investigation of languages is aiming ever more resolutely at the production of what is called “metalanguage.” Analytical philosophy, which is set on producing this super-language, is thus quite consistent when it considers itself metalinguistics. That sounds like metaphysics -not only sounds like it, it is metaphysics. Metalinguistics is the metaphysics of the thoroughgoing technicalization of all languages into the sole operative instrument of interplanetary information. Metalanguage and sputnik, metalinguistics and rocketry are the Same.
Martin Heidegger

Understanding is the existential Being of Dasein’s own potentiality-for-Being; and it is so in such a way that this Being discloses in itself what its Being is capable of.

Yet if reading must not be content with doubling the text, it cannot legitimately transgress the text toward something other than it, toward a referent (a reality that is metaphysical, historical, psychobiographical, etc.) or toward a signified outside the text whose content could take place, could have taken place outside of language... There is nothing outside of the text.

İnsanın acı çekerek öğrenmesi gereken şey şu ya da bu belirli şey değil, insanı varlığın sınırlılıklarına, insanı tanrısal olandan ayıran bariyerlerin mutlaklığına vukuftur.
Hans-Georg Gadamer
[Kaynak: Gadamer (2009) Hakikat ve Yöntem, çev. Hüsamettin Arslan-Ismail Yavuzcan (İstanbul: Paradigma Yayıncılık), İkinci Cilt, 134.]
Tradition is the transmitting of linguistic messages that constitute the horizon within which Dasein is thrown as a historically determined project: and tradition derives its importance from the fact that Being, as a horizon of disclosure in which things appear, can arise only as a trace of past words or as an announcement that has been handed down to us.
Gianni Vattimo

When a human being searches for truth, ... I bet he finds nothing.
Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche

The focus of subjectivity is a distorting mirror. The self-awareness of the individual is only a flickering in the closed circuits of historical life. That is why the prejudices of the individual, far more than his judgments, constitute the historical reality of his being.

Inscription becomes synonymous with the semantic autonomy of the text, which results from the disconnection of the mental intention of the author meant and that the text means. The text's career escapes the finite horizon lived by its author. What the text means now matters more than what the author meant when he wrote it.
Paul Ricoeur
[Reference: Ricoeur (1976) Interpretation Theory: Discourse and the Surplus of Meaning (Forth Worth: Texas Christian Uni. Press).]
My experience cannot directly become your experience. As event belonging to one stream of consciousness cannot be transferred as such into another stream of consciousness. Yet, nevertheless, something passes from me to you. Something is transferred from one sphere of life to another. This something is not the experience as experienced, but its meaning. Here is the miracle. The experience as experienced, as lived, remains private, but its sense, its meaning, becomes public. Communication in this way is the overcoming of the radical non-communicability of the lived experience as lived.
