#TBT to this kid posing for his senior year high school marching band picture in the fall of 2006. It was just a few years earlier that I came back to music (after playing alto sax in 4th-6th grade) in the form of playing bass guitar and singing in HS choir. It was also around this time that I began writing music for the first time (with my band, Resistansen). 15 years later I'm still so in love with music and writing. Happy New Year! As I've mentioned before, I've been working with my partner in crime* @brennadinon on crafting an audio drama podcast for quite some time. Over the last 2 years we've developed our characters, world, plots, arcs, and to ring in the new year we've finished our first draft of season 1. We're incredibly excited to redraft, cast, and produce this baby - about as excited as we are to share these characters with you. It's been fun writing them and spending time in their world. Our show is a horror-comedy. Perhaps more of a comedy wearing the clothes of a horror. To the surprise of no one who knows Brenna, it's quite akin to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. While writing we've really tried to study and be aware of the limits and capabilities of the medium. We've listened to old radio dramas as well as modern audio drama podcasts like @phenomenonpod and @marsfallpod (2 podcasts we definitely would recommend checking out), in hopes that our diligence results in a well crafted tale. This is the big one. It's by far the biggest undertaking either of us have done, and I know I couldn't do it without Brenna. Another End-of-Year post! As I mentioned yesterday in my music post, this has been an incredibly productive year. Because of the lack of visual elements, I won't make a separate post about what I've written this year, but, despite the latter half of the year being light on writing I still managed to write 18 microfictions, 4 flash fictions, 1 short story, and a handful of poems. I love the short story, Toska, in particular, and I'd like to try to get it published in the future. Now onto FILM! This year marked my return to film. Barring the avant garde "Thirst" released last year (a poem that utilized footage I shot years prior), my last film project was released when I was still in grad school (Drøm, 2014). As soon as the lockdown hit I focused heavily on editing old footage I had filmed years ago with Vince, and on March, 27, my quirky avant garde short "Making Love" was released. Continuing that trend, I began editing old footage from grad school documenting a video installation I created with artist Yoshimi Sonobe in 2013. Rather than a flat image of the installation I attempted to focus on tone and mood, and I'm quite proud of the video and music I produced. On June, 26, I released "The Black Has Never Been So Vibrant". Then the pièce de résistance of the year: with Brenna, we created our own production company, BAD DEY Productions. We knew it was coming for a while (as long as we've been working on writing/scripting an audio drama podcast - more on that in 2021), but we launched it with our inaugural short; a horror-comedy about lockdown and potatoes, "Self-Quarantined" was released on September, 18. Brenna and I already have several ideas for upcoming short films involving sleepwalking, haunted cameras, and of course the odd bit of murder here and there. It's been quite a year - loaded with global, local, and personal stress. There are generally 2 ways I cope with stress. I sink into the couch and binging shows (shout out to miniseries such as Catch 22, Maniac, and Gundam 0080, 0083, Unicorn, & The Origin for providing a soft cushion to land on)... Or, more often than not, I use the fire around me to focus on projects. I am incredibly proud of the work I've put into making this one of my most productive years on record. March 15th: I wrapped up recording and videoing my perspective piece on Severus Snape from Harry Potter. The song was eventually submitted and appeared on the 2020 Wizard Rock Sampler. It was also responsible for some very important firsts. This was the first song of mine to ever get "radio play" - not once, but twice!  First, after posting it in a wizarding rock facebook group the host of Radio Active Kids from NC played me in their all-ages wrock block.  Then, thanks to that wrock sampler I also appeared on Planet Krypton's Filkcast! May 1: I released Chained to the Past, a single that I wrote nearly entirely on February 29, in keeping with my tradition of committing leap days to art. It was a unique challenge to combine an "old" and "new" aesthetic! June 26: I released Dark Tide, the soundtrack for an installation video I shot in 2013 and only just got around to editing during quarantine. Very atmospheric and ominous, I really love the way it turned out. December 18: 9 years after its initial release, ChikënFist's Christmas of Want EP was released digitally. It was a lot of fun to retouch this EP with Vince, and very rewarding to put it where it can finally be heard. We even recorded a new track for it, which freakin slaps! I haven't been super active on this page recently, but over the last few months @vinnyontour and I have been hard at work, touching up and remastering our first EP with ChikënFist, "Christmas of Want" (see more here: @chikenfistmusic). We're taking the original files we've recorded from 2009-2011 (and another cover from 2012), cleaning up recorded tracks (EQs, compressors, other effects), remixing them, re-recording segments we weren't happy with, adding a little flare to the songs with instruments we didn't have then (bass uke, cajon), then mastering the songs. It's a lot of work, but worth it! If you're one of the 25 people who bought our CD in 2011 you'll hear a difference.
