Year 1, your business makes a million dollars in profit. Great start!

Year 2, you make another million. Oh no! Your business is failing because you didn't make more than last year!

Okay, say year 2 you make $2 mil. Now you're profitable!

Then year 3 you make $3 mil. Oh no! Your business is failing! But wait, you made more money than last year right? Sure, but you didn't make ENOUGH more than last year so actually your business is actively tanking! Time to sell off shares and dismantle it for parts! You should have made $4 mil in profit to be profitable, you fool!

If you're not making more money every year by an ever-increasing exponent, the business is failing!

If you make $4 million on that third year, you are STILL failing. Because the idea is not that you grow your profit every year, the idea is that you should grow YOUR GROWTH.

Like, if the "Year over year" income from year 2-compared-to-year-1 grew by 100%, then the YoY from 3-to-2 is supposed to have grown more than that 100%. You are supposed to accelerate your growth, all the time. If you keep growing the same rate every year, consistently? you are failing.

What do they know that I don't? I don't feel like I can ask my employer's president to explain to me why he thinks this is all a good idea. I would have to explain why it doesn't seem possible and explain any logical contradictions and then call out any hand-waving. I'm not sure I would have a job or a real explanation at the end of that process.

Do I need to go get an MBA to understand why they all think this is okay? That seems like a waste of money, but I suppose I could try it.

It's greed, sheer greed, and the pump-and-dump mindset. The people actually making money off these companies don't care one bit for their workers, the future of society or the environment, or even - this is crucial - the survival of the companies themselves. What they want is to get in early, grow their profits as fast as possible, then ditch and repeat.

It's why companies that could be moderately profitable are being killed off. Slow, steady growth is boring to these people; they have everything they could ever want materially, and so they want challenge. They want the thrill of gambling with the world's assets. They want to screw everyone over, take the money and run to their bunkers. Or properties in New Zealand.

And everyone else? Well, they're making their money by sucking up. As long as they can keep the investors and CEOs sweet, they get a slice of the pie. Some of them probably know it won't last forever, but what's their alternative: fight the system and end up broke or in jail? When they're doing pretty good for themselves?

Better to push down your conscience and live another day. Because the people at the top have ensured that if you fall off the corporate ladder, if you want to do anything except work to make their numbers go up, you won't have enough to feed your family, or yourself. Infrastructure? Public services? Health and safety regulations? All things that can be sacrificed or strip-mined for the sake of the numbers.
