recently bought some fire brick to make a blank ring for my kiln, essentially a extension to give me a couple more inches of room to fire bigger pieces in.

The techniques I use for fur texture have developed a lot over the years and depend on each piece (some animals have longer fur and such) but to put it simply I like to sculpt with Very wet and soft clay, and don't really use tools aside from my hands for 90% of the sculpting (they do come in handy for noses/eyes/mouths/etc) so a lot of the texture is just the markings left by my fingers. I sculpt everything solid and then hollow out later, so I can manipulate everything as much as I want in the beginning!

I like the clay to be as wet as possible but still hold its shape, somewhere around a sour cream-ish softness for fur texturing. To keep the piece from having sharp edges/uncomfortable rough textures I also sand them down with green scrubby pads after they are bone dry. That makes them really soft visually and literally!!
