but also, canon era. penelope realizes hes HoH after ody has already gone off to troy. i tried to look up if they had sign language in ancient greece and i dont think so? or at least it wasnt mainstream enough. so probably penelope and telemachus made their own sorta sign language. but typically telemachus either talks out loud or writes. awesome at writing bc he practiced a lot since its his preferred form of communication. struggles with fighting bc of the lack of auditory input. athena communicates with him fully on sign bc she loves how he and penelope made a whole ass language. odysseus returns from the odyssey and telemachus wants to hide hes HoH so bad. odysseus thinks telemachus hates him bc hes "ignoring him" (he cant fucking hear him). eventually penelope tells him. odysseus starts learning the sign language first thing. hes not as good at it bc the whole odyssey's stress probably left him with some sort of generalized chronic pain so he struggles with signs that need too much Putting His Hands A Certain Way. but he still tries. and telemachus loves him bc hes the dad ever. yay<3
