âBlewâ was written in 1988 and first performed live at the Community World Theatre in Tacoma, WA on March 19, 1988. The Bleach version of âBlewâ was accidentally recorded one step lower than the band had intended, which contributed to what Nirvana biographer Michael Azerrad called its "extraordinarily heavy sound." Not realizing that they had already tuned to their favored Drop D tuning, the band tuned further down to Drop C on the first day of the sessions and recorded several songs in that tuning.
As Krist Novoselic recalled in a 2009, âwe came back the next day and decided the idea wasnât so hot, and we recorded over most of it with things tuned back up a little. In fact, 'Blew,' with that growly bass, is the only survivor of that experiment.â Novoselic said that âBlewâ was perhaps his favorite song on Bleach âbecause it has a groove, and again, itâs the sole survivor of the Doom Pop experiment.â
In his 1993 Nirvana biography Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana, Michael Azerrad described the song as having a âtheme of entrapment and control.â
The Bleach version of âBlewâ was re-released on the Blew EP in November 1989. The band's original plan had been to release an EP to promote their current European tour, but the EP was delayed and released exclusively in the United Kingdom after the tour was over. However, the EP built on the interest the band had generated in the UK with Bleach. The Blew EP peaked at #15 on the UK Indie chart.
âBlewâ remained one of only three songs from Bleach, along with âAbout a Girlâ and âSchool,â which the band performed until their dissolution in April 1994. It was performed for the final time live at Nirvana's last show, at Terminal Einz in Munich, Germany on March 1, 1994.
In 2015, Rolling Stone's listed âBlewâ at number 22 on their ranking of 102 Nirvana songs.

I think the reason why people listen to music so much is because they are desperate to hear the words theyâre afraid to say.

âThere was a guy I was playing with that I met through high school, and he ended up introducing me to Josh. They had worked together at Guitar Center. It was just one of those really organic type of friendships, where you just meet somebody at a job. He introduced me to Josh, and when you meet someone, youâre like, âHey, yeah, letâs hang out sometime.â I donât know how many times I say that and it never happens. Well, this one actually did happen, we actually did hang out once. Iâm glad that we did because the first time we did, we stayed up until all hours of the night talking about our dreams and our goals when it comes to music. When I got to that conversation, I was like, âThis is a guy I want to play music with.â So, we just met through mutual friends and a good talk, and weâre still going strong.â  |-/

a message for trans guys starting T
starting T is exciting, and for the first few weeks/months youâll be looking for changes EVERYWHERE, trying to measure how low your voice is going, how much your face is changing, etc.
But there will inevitably be a point (usually some time in your first year) where you will start feeling like nothing is happening; like you havenât changed enough to where people notice, because your body shape hasnât changed, you havenât sprouted a full beard yet, your voice is still androgynous instead of manly, that T just isnt working for you.
And for that I have a little anecdote: Iâm around 7 months on T, and Iâve noticed my voice drop, tiny changes in my face, and my peach fuzz has started getting longer. But because of the way my fat has not redistributed, I still get misgendered sometimes because I have a very distinct body type. So I started having those thoughts that I wasnât changing and that no one was even noticing, and that maybe I was just unlucky and T wasnât going to do much for me.
And then, something really cool happened - THREE separate people from my work, who only see me occasionally because theyâre from different departments, approached me or stopped me to talk when they saw me. After determining that I was okay with talking about it, they each asked me if I was on hormones (a detail I didnât share with a lot of people at work, but am comfortable with doing so if asked politely) and told me they had noticed because I changed so much since I started working there a year ago. They had noticed my voice dropping, that I looked different. One of them told me it was incredible how much had happened in just 7 months. And let me tell you, that was so amazing and uplifting for me to hear, and it totally changed my outlook on how I think about my transition.
The thing is, we live with ourselves every day. We scrutinize ourselves to measure just how much we are changing, but we miss so many things that happen because theyâre so gradual that we donât notice. But the people around us - they notice, they see and acknowledge that we are changing. I promise, things ARE happening. T is working for you. Sometimes it just takes stepping out of your own shoes to get a different perspective to see it.
This goes for men who have periods tooâŚ
You'll never guess who's really cool!
