Guy who torments for a living and the blonde menace who torments him back
Emergency cleaning: Unfuck your whole house in the shortest time possible
So, your landlord/parents/home inspector/favorite movie star is dropping by, and your place is a disaster. You don’t have much time to clean it up. You’re in emergency mode. Let’s get started.
Don’t panic. Panic leads to fear, fear leads to procrastination, procrastination leads to the dark side. You can do this, but you have to stay calm.
Unlike maintenance cleaning, we’re not looking to completely unfuck one space at a time. Instead, we want to decrease the overall mess in stages, spread evenly across the whole area that we’re concerned about. If you think your home is at Level 10 filth, we want to bring the whole thing down to a Level 9, and then down from there. One really clean spot in an otherwise messy home is not going to be helpful here.
Get prepared. You’ll want to shut the computer down (or turn the modem off if you need your computer to play music). Trust me. Get your music going. Gather up trash bags, your vacuum and mop, some rags or paper towel, sponges, and other cleaning supplies. Use what you have on hand. Don’t get distracted running to the store and spending an hour browsing cleaning supplies. A multi-purpose cleaning concentrate or a jug of vinegar will be just fine.
Breaks are very important. Depending on your time constraints, work in 20/10s (20 minutes working, 10-minute break) or 45/15s. But take breaks because otherwise you’re marathoning, and marathon cleaning is no one’s friend. Keep hydrated, don’t forget to eat, and check in with yourself frequently to make sure you’re physically doing OK.
Make your bed. This will be your home base if you get overwhelmed or need somewhere clear to take a break.
Start with the garbage. Going from room to room, throw out anything that is obvious trash. Once you fill a bag, take it out. Repeat as many times as necessary.
Move on to dishes. Gather the dishes from all over your house and bring them to the kitchen. If you can, start them soaking in a sink of hot, soapy water or start loading the dishwasher. After the dishes are all in one place, spend one 20/10 getting started getting them under control.
Now it’s time for your flat surfaces. Countertops, tables, dresser tops, etc. Clear them off and wipe them down. Don’t get distracted in too much sorting and organizing. We’re in crisis mode here. There will be time to get in-depth once this is all done. The same applies to cabinets and closets. Unless you have reason to believe people will be opening closed doors, leave these alone for now.
Attack the floordrobe and shoe pile. Get your clothes either put away or in the hamper. Start a load of laundry if you need to, but keep in mind that laundry and dishes have three steps: wash, dry, and put it away, goddammit!
Get random stuff up off the floors. If something is trash-worthy, throw it away now rather than just move it around a bunch of times. Otherwise, put stuff where it belongs.
Take another 20/10 or 45/15 to catch up on more dishes, if needed.
Head into the bathroom. Pour some cleaner in the toilet bowl, fill the sink with hot water and cleaner, and either spray the tub and shower with cleaner, or fill the tub up with some hot water and add cleaner and let it soak. Put everything away that’s out and shouldn’t be, clean the mirror, counters, and toilet seat. Sweep or dry mop the floor. Wipe down the sink and tub/shower, and give the toilet bowl a scrub. Mop the floor.
Sweep and mop the kitchen floor.
Vacuum everything you can, and sweep everything you can’t.
Walk outside of your house (don’t lock yourself out, please). Walk back in and see what catches your eye first. Go and deal with that.
If you’re being inspected or your landlord is coming in for repairs, spend time on whatever area they’ll be focusing on.
Give the whole place one more once-over and pay attention to anything you’ve missed so far.
It’s an old trick, but if your place is a little funky-smelling, put a pan of water on the stove on low heat and add some citrus or cinnamon or vanilla. Don’t leave it unattended or forget about it.
Take a shower, put on something clean, and eat something.
You can do this. It’s overwhelming, yes, but it is not impossible. You just need to do it. You have a list. You have directions. You have a whole bunch of Internet strangers who have been there before and who are cheering you on. You can do this, but you need to get started.
Why are you still here? GO. START. NOW.
the number of times in my past that I desperately wanted/needed someone to sit me down and tell me this stuff. I will never get back the hours and hours lost to headless-chicken mode, but it’s nice to know that in the last year I’ve learned so many coping mechanisms :D
“how did you get into writing” girl nobody gets into writing. writing shows up one day at your door and gets into you
"how did you get into writing" girl i've been tormented by the visions since i was eight years old
The legacies people leave behind in you.
My handwriting is the same style as the teacher’s who I had when I was nine. I’m now twenty one and he’s been dead eight years but my i’s still curve the same way as his.
I watched the last season of a TV show recently but I started it with my friend in high school. We haven’t spoken in four years.
I make lentil soup through the recipe my gran gave me.
I curl my hair the way my best friend showed me.
I learned to love books because my father loved them first.
How terrifying, how excruciatingly painful to acknowledge this. That I am a jigsaw puzzle of everyone I have briefly known and loved. I carry them on with me even if I don’t know it. How beautiful.
absolutely obsessed with these tags

When you are used to the no-nonsense, no-context approach of medieval Irish stories, trying to read Old Norse saga literature does feel kind of like you're being told a medieval story by Uncle Colm from Derry Girls.
#you know young thorgrim as it was #ah this wouldn't be the thorgrim who was thorstein's son #THAT thorgrim lived on the other side of the fjord #or WAS it that thorgrim? #no it was the other thorgrim #his father was thorstein too you see but he was quite a different man #although you wouldn't know it to look at his farm #a mess of a place it was #i said to him thorstein i said you need to start asking thorgrim to help you more #and he said they've a haunting #would you believe it! #a haunting! #it would have been around then or was it the winter after that when they had the famine #no i think it was that winter #and a young man arrived. a warrior he was. #i never knew his father but his father's uncle— (via @trans-cuchulainn)
If this were a medieval Irish story, it would be more like:
"There was an excellent warrior, Thorir his name. He was fostered by Thorstein, who had a son called Thorgrim, but it was not an auspicious time for their farm, because there was a haunting there. When Thorir saw the dead man, he tied a withe around its feet, but it pursued him anyway. Then he performed the sword-feat, and cut the man into many pieces. He took his head and went back to Thorgrim mac Thorstein. 'O fosterbrother,' he said, 'I have killed the man who was haunting you, that is, the revenant.' Thorgrim said, 'This is a great deed.' And that is why that place is called Hill of the Dead Man."
And we will never find out who any of these people are or what was up with the revenant or what Thorir was trying to achieve with the withe -- or even who the revenant was before he was dead.
Meanwhile in the Norse saga we're still learning his family tree and Thorir hasn't even shown up yet.
in law school, my mom took me to this stress retreat because my family was vaguely aware i was a suicide risk. and they didnt allow phones, so i brought this huge bag of books. and one of the options for "destressing" was this fake cave grotto thing, where they'd decorated a room to make it look exactly like an underground cave and the air was like -10 degrees, but there was a like 4ft deep pool in the middle that was kept super super hot, so you would just switch between the hot and cold. and they would bring you an endless supply of this weird syrupy drink thing that was like super caffeinated and tasted like sugar and mint. and so i spent multiple days sitting half submerged in this fake grotto drinking mystery liquid and reading. and i have to be honest i really did feel less stressed

citations still have to be APA 7th edition though. if you plagiarise, the gods will flood the yellow river again. and you'll lose your academic standing.

Watching movies with small children is an EXPERIENCE, like tiny human, you have NO sense of story progression
Which is to say we put on the first How to Train Your Dragon
And at the dramatic "first flight" scene, two-year-old shouted "HIM FALL" and started SOBBING. She straight up thought that movie had murdered Hiccup and Toothless halfway through. Had to get double parental hugs and a constant stream of reassurances until they figured that whole flying thing out
All movies could be horror movies if your brain hasn't equipped Plot Armor to the protagonists
Anyway five-year-old is pleased to report that he "liked the part where the big dragon exploded"
#Welcome to the action adventure genre my children#Five year old was VIBRATING through the climax like straight up legs kicking fists clenched#Had to be held by Spouse until we figured out he wasn't afraid#He was experiencing baby's first blood lust#Kid wanted that dragon DEAD and it HAPPENED and he was VIOLENTLY SATISFIED
What is the fetish that fan creators have for making Jewish characters eat pork
They’re always so smug about it too like “tee hee it’s a sign that he’s conflicted in his faith! He’s assimilated!”
Shut up, he would not fucking eat that.
It's cuz that's all they know about Jewishness. People "get bar-mitzvahed" and they are forbidden from eating pork. To not "get bar-mitzvahed" or to choose to eat pork is transgressive... But also guilt-inducing!
It's just so ignorant. You become bar-mitzvah whether you have a public ceremony about it or not and people engage with kashrut in all sorts of ways.
Truly, in the most cynical core of my Jewish heart, I think this goyishe obsession with making Jewish characters eat treyf is the same as it ever was. Did you know that there are rules for kashrut for plain, unprocessed milk? Not milk-products. Straight milk. And this is because - I kid you not - in the Middle Ages, Christians would go through the weird labor of milking their pigs and sneaking the sow's milk into Jewish milk barrels. There's some perverse fascination with making a person do something they don't want to do. (You can see this also with people tricking vegans into eating animal products or that infamous post about someone vending full-sugar soda to "skinny girls" who order diet.)
But it's especially egregious to do this to Jewish characters because of the millenia of history of real people doing real bullshit like this to real Jews.
#This person forbid themselves from something -let's make the#do what's forbidden for them lol#And also. Why straight up pork right at the begining? If they ate only kosher all of their life they'll start with something small.#A glass of milk 20 minutes after eating meat. Seafood maybe? Meat that's treyf. cheeseburger?#Eating pork is a HUGE step. Is a NO WAY BACK step. Even jews that eat seafood and don't keep time between milk and meat don't eat pork.#Pork is the ultimate step. A good writer who's done thier research will start with something smaller to show that they're losing their fate#jumblr#Also big yes on goyim love to make jews eat food that's not kosher. It's some#And then you read a book and the white characters are throwing up bc the evil Chinese resturant made them eat dogs or horses! how dare they#It's not like we asked what's in this meal but how dare they!#Which. is a really weird phenomanan. Where if a culture don't eat food that is considered “normal” it's super weird and sometimes even in#modern day people will try to make them eat it anyway. And if a culture eats something that they don't consider “normal” then it's horrible#and any white person who'll eat it will throw up.

OMG
Things that I knew about: that the mass incarceration of people in the USA , particularly black men, has direct ties to/is an extension of slavery. Things I did not know: this specific shit about Louisiana HOLY FUCK this is evil.
OH MY GOSH????
When activist Sam Sinyangwe was awaiting a meeting with the governor’s office at the Louisiana state capitol building in Baton Rouge, he not
The 13th Amendment provides a loophole that allows for the legality of unpaid prison labor, which is sometimes called "modern-day slavery."
Grew up next to Angola. It’s much worse than you think
I wonder how many people are imprisoned for weed
I’m from Mississippi and it’s like this in my home town. Enslaved prisoners clean roadways, pick cotton, everything they’ve done since before slavery was supposedly ended. What they teach in schools is nothing but propaganda.
Banksy has confirmed that a new statue erected in London is his work and I think it might be one of my favourite pieces by him.
Called "Blinded by the Flag" it... actually, you don't need me to explain it, it's art, you'll get it and interpret it yourself.
It's in Waterloo Place, Central London, if you're nearby.
The first photo had me nodding, and then the full shot nearly killed me laughing. Perfection!
