RIP Peter Parker, Long Live Spiderman?
Like the title of the post says Marvel has done something a little different than the norm of killing a character (which Spidey has done more than a few times). Peter Parker the character, or more precisely his consciousness, is dead yet Spider-Man still survives. I can hear the questions of how, and if you haven't been following Amazing Spiderman as of late you might not know the circumstances that led up to this odd happening, so let me educate you.
In the Amazing Spiderman comic series Doc Ock has been slowly dying from complications of being punched in the face one too many times by super strength heroes and villains. Seeing his ultimate demise coming for him he devises his ultimate end game.
He developes an octobot to transfer his consciousness into the body of his greatest foe Spidey and taking over his life. Ock is succesful with the transferance of his mind into the body of Peter Parker keeping all of his memories, while forcing Parker's mind into his own dying body. In the extra large 700th and ultimate edition of Amazing Spiderman, Peter Parker makes one last ploy to make a difference and live up to his life long creed. In his last moments of life he forces Octavius to see his life, the life Peter Parker, to flash before his eyes; to truly understand what it is to be Spiderman. Octavius learns through it all Spiderman has always tried to the best for everyone friend and foe alike, holding back when necessary, when letting loose was the only way, and all the compasion he felt for those around him. Parker dies Octavius promises that he will be a better Spiderman a superior Spiderman, and make Peter proud along with all those who have and will believed in him. Thus the beginning of the new series Superior Spiderman.
This book really illustrates why I love Marvel so much. Most of the bad guys in the Marvel Universe aren't necessarily evil, but trying to attain good in a social unacceptable manner. Making the dynamics at times difficult to see who is good and who is evil. While simuataneously this book really changes much of the dynamic of the life of "Peter Parker" and Spiderman. Before the book ends J. Jonah Jameson changes his opinion about Spiderman and reconciles with his father (now husband of Aunt May if you didn't know). He also apologizes to Horizon labs for being so harsh on them. And what is a slightly more interesting and possibly has more impact (to me at least) was the reigniting of the relationship of MJ and "Peter Parker." All of this combined with the mind switch and super gungho-ness of Octavius will make the new series all the more interesting to see where they go with the story. How far will Octavius go? How far will the relationship get? Will Jameson keep supporting Spidey? Will the memories of Parker eventually take back over? So many questions and only the new series can answer them. Definitely something Spidey fans should keep an eye on.
