Karloff - Revered by Death
Black Metal/Punk from Oldenburg, Germany
KARLOFF return with their second album, ‘Revered by Death’. ‘Revered by Death’ is certainly the logical continuation of ‘The Appearing’. The same leaden stomp is present here, but the tempos KARLOFF run through are undeniably more atmospheric and darker; if it weren't for the feeling of suppressed violence, LP#2 could almost be described as ‘muddy’. Fortunately, none of the energy is lost, as KARLOFF's old-fashioned evil takes an even darker turn, while the tempos seem a little more restrained. This darkness is further enhanced by chorus effects, which are once again used tastefully and hint at a post-punk influence that could become even more prominent in the future; impressive proof of this is the deathrock instrumental ‘On Weathered Altar’. As it stands, Revered by Death more than lives up to its lofty title, with KARLOFF's heaviness coming less from the volume or distortion they employ and more from the overall feel of their songwriting: powerful, but with a deeper gloom and darkness. Ghouls and ghosts, thugs and thieves: KARLOFF are back and calling on you to be Revered by Death!
