"Eco-friendly" paper drinking straws contain long-lasting and potentially toxic chemicals, a new study has concluded.
"Eco-friendly" paper drinking straws contain long-lasting and potentially toxic chemicals, a new study has concluded. In the first analysis of its kind in Europe, and only the second in the world, Belgian researchers tested 39 brands of straws for the group of synthetic chemicals known as poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). PFAS were found in the majority of the straws tested and were most common in those made from paper and bamboo, found the study, published in Food Additives & Contaminants. PFAS are used to make everyday products, from outdoor clothing to non-stick pans, resistant to water, heat and stains. However, they are potentially harmful to people, wildlife and the environment. They break down very slowly over time and can persist over thousands of years in the environment, a property that has led to them being known as "forever chemicals." They have been associated with a number of health problems, including lower response to vaccines, lower birth weight, thyroid disease, increased cholesterol levels, liver damage, kidney cancer and testicular cancer.

Also on a human-level, many (most?) paper straws are sealed with a wheat starch glue, meaning it was never safe for people with celiac like I me to use paper straws
companies underestimate how much locking their content behind needing an account will just make me go do something else. oh your website wants me to make an account to view this content? oh your website doesn't show media to logged-out users? okay. i didn't actually want to see it that bad. yeah. bye ✌️

You CAN do pullups, my friend!

i adore this guy. he’s got such chill energy, and gives clear information on multiple levels of an exercise. i’m disabled and largely bedridden, and having someone that tells you where to start without being condescending in ANY way is…much harder to find than it should be.
Striking a blow against the capitalist fetishisation of productivity by devoting enormous and elaborate effort to something utterly pointless.
we’re already on Tumblr, Dave

Every single person I know who did football in high school, without exception, has a chronic injury. Many regret what it's done to their knees and back, even major organs like the brain.
There is no serious legislative push to ban high school football.
Also, like, if you want to talk about social pressure on minors to undertake activities that will result in regrettable, irreversible damage to their bodies:
No one, *ever*, tried to persuade me to transition.
My gym teacher tried to persuade me to try out for the football team almost every single day that I was in junior high.
And if you had asked me, even back then, whether I would rather lose my reproductive capacity or suffer irreversible brain damage, I know that I would have chosen the former without a second's hesitation.
You know I keep seeing this go around and if we're gonna do anecdotal stuff my husband has only the pains that come with age and the stuff he did to himself after high school football.
I'm not saying you're wrong- but I'm saying you saying "everyone I know" isn't evidence. It's anecdotes. Share the studies so I can stop being frustrated with you for leaning on stories.
Let me Google that for you...
Or I could Google this for you.
How about the fact that 91% of college football players, and 21% of HS football players, have CTE?
Like... nobody has to provide you with studies on shit that it is so wildly easy to Google. This is like someone said "I think about water being wet," and you saying "this is just anecdotal." I love data too but asking someone to provide you with evidence on "is high school football dangerous as fuck and bad for your body" is borderline sealioning.
Maybe I'm just fucking bitter as hell bc every time I remember that football broke every single one of Emet's fingers at least once, and both of her knees are fucked all to hell and she's had arthritis in her spine since she was 25 from football injuries, I get so angry that I feel physically ill. But come the fuck on.

A wonderful, long-time friend of mine passed away too young last year and this was his favorite quote, from Twin Peaks. Don't forget to give yourself a little present today.
In case you weren’t aware, sting rays are basically puppies.
oh hey I know these guys! they’re in a little tide pool at the Monterrey Bay Aquarium and they’re super sweet. If they see you standing next to the pool they’ll jump up out of the water and splash you until you pet them
