Knifeman The Bronx - 2008
The Bronx, hailing from California, kick off this sonic hardcore anthem with a guitar riff sounding like a bulldozer slamming repeatedly into unyielding concrete. Itโs heavy. Itโs brutal. Itโs fast. Drums kick in and the line that hooked me comes crashing in with all the subtlety of an elephant in a China Shop. I wanna be original, I wanna be surrounded by art. I feel you Bronx. I feel you. I feel like a fraud every time I write and as far from as original as they come. But I do try to surround myself in art. Very loud art.ย
The song tackles so many issues with an underlying common thread being trapped in the machine that holds us all down. And is just as topical today as when it came out. They riot in the streets, because thereโs not enough money to share. How long will the same song be sung? How many different versions of the same message are we gonna hear? The bridge is just a breakdown of gut wrenching anger unleashed to the sound of the bulldozer guitar. Voice almost breaking as the singer screams, we used to be giftedโฆ we lost our fire. A reminiscent look back on how we once perceived ourselves. Before all our dreams were crushed.ย
Knifeman is a loud and angry desire to be both free and original. This song is a call to the punk inside of everyone who is gonna change the world and never compromise. Never be a part of the rat race and never become mundane and trapped in routine. I listen to this when I wanna feel the disappointed 14 year old inside myself who had such big plans but then life happened but a tiny bit of that fire is smouldering.ย
