Actually I don’t feel that bad that Daniel was ditched by his vampire dad for two years because now maybe he understands even a fraction of what he put both of his daughters through.
I mean both of them. Some shitty dads try a little harder on the second marriage and second kid, which is still fucked but it’s something. But you just didn’t bother either time. Okay.
Look at me, I’m Daniel Molloy. I’m a huge piece of shit. I was a bad person when I was alive and now the most beautiful vampire in the world is obsessed with me. I get to live with him for the rest of time on the island he bought me. Man, fuck you.
No matter which character or ship you're most devoted to, I think we can all agree that when Claudia's ghost appears, she needs to bitch slap all four men.
Delainey Hayles as Claudia Interview with the Vampire/The Vampire Lestat | S03E05 "New York"
IWTVL S3 Ep5 Musings - "The Metal Sun In My Veins"
I've been working my way up to this post, because there's A LOT to cover, and I wanted to break up some of my points into separate posts so I could refer back to all of them right here. TBH I hate having to talk about Amel/Akasha midway thru the season, cuz I fully expect 3x7 to drop some crazy plot twist/reveal to throw everything we've seen in S3 into a new light. But as of 3x5, here's what I think might be going on.
The Timeline
"Amelian Anger" & Possession Is Abuse Apologia
My Father's / Maker's Temper
Vampiric Bioessentialism: Nature vs Nurture
I think Lestat's carrying the "burden" of Akasha's Blood as the red herring of The Abuse Show about how generational trauma & abuse perpetuate; rather than abusive behavior as the red herring of The Vampire Show the way so many (Lestans) want it to be.
This is brilliant! I hope this what they're doing. You made me feel better about the future of the show.
Here's another article that seems to be pointing towards Amel possession (or maybe he just meant Akasha's blood? who knows):
This thing that actually became a harbor of safety, this music, it comes at this auspicious time when this thing happened to him and put something inside his body, just when he was starting to almost figure out how to live as a vampire,” Jones says of this time with Akasha. “This extra shit, this weird juice has come in, and it's gonna fundamentally take him to this day. He shapes this as the origins of ‘me as a musician.’
I swear, dude is shooting himself in the foot with those interviews. But you're right, he IS a troll so everything that is coming out from his mouth should be taken with a grain of salt.

A not admitting of the wound (1188) by Emily Dickinson
And another thing AND ANOTHER THING.
is that no wonder he had to go meet lestat and get confirmation before he could begin to heal because SO MUCH of louis’ self loathing has been tied into his inability to stop loving lestat even though he was being gaslit to believe that lestat killed their daughter. HE TOLD ALL OF SEASON ONE. BELIEVING THAT LESTAT KILLED THEIR DAUGHTER. no wonder his mind had to entirely cut out that he saved lestat in 107 like it is a reality impossible to live with and then he spends all of s2 believing that the reason his daughter died is bc he saved lestat. and then in 207 he’s like I don’t know how I could’ve ever not been weak for lestat if it meant I got to have Claudia and Lestat and a life with them as my family. Penny candy isn’t the answer and again I’m kissing Lestat on the altar—Lestat proposes, but he’s the one who says yes, he’s the one who leans in and kisses Lestat, this is an active thing he did, he’s the subject. And the grief of Claudia is there because he had her and knew her and loved her and that wouldn’t have been possible if he wasn’t weak, if he didn’t kiss Lestat at the altar. And he wouldn’t ever choose an option where he doesn’t have his daughter even if it’s the more painful option. But he still loves the man he thinks killed her. But he gave her to him. BUT HE STILL THINKS. THIS MAN KILLED THEIR DAUGHTER. BUT HE SMILES REMEMBERING LESTAT SAYING WE WERE A HAPPY TRIO. EVEN THOUGH THE MEMORY IS FROM THE WORST DAY OF HIS LIFE. And lestat is wearing his wedding ring
loustat if they could tweet, probably [part 1/?]

@theartofdisobdedience LET'S TALK ABOUT IT! 💯😤 Thank you for your response! I'm making this a separate post so we can have all the space we need to really get into it. Imma read the recent Sam Reid article you mentioned, and put it here, too.

Passive & Active - Lestat vs Louis
This post is long AF, so I'm putting it all under the cut cuz sheesh.

At least you can always trust them to utilize the fuck out of that like 1 cm height difference between Sam and Jacob. Loustat have a visible canon size difference because it's just right and proper

INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE 01.05 | "A Vile Hunger for Your Hammering Heart"
THE VAMPIRE LESTAT 03.05 | "New York"
I will answer more questions when I am free, but if you keep repeating that m/f scenes this season are more explicit because they are supposed to make you feel uncomfortable and that's the ultimate design, it's not going to become more real. Let's say they are explicit to make the viewers uncomfortable. So only uncomfortable intimate scenes deserve this treatment? Explicitness is allowed when it's disturbing, but not when it's between two people of the same sex who are in love with each other and share the moment of intimacy? And gay people are supposed to be called fetishizers by so-called smart and understanding iwtv queer community whenever they notice this? Showing us BJ's naked ass while she was riding Lestat was necessary because it's not true love and Lestat is hypersexual and it's supposed to drive the point home, but there's no point in showing more of Lestat with Nicki because what, they love each other?
Gabistat is disturbing and that's why it's more explicit, but people who say this also find Loumand disturbing and yet they don't have any similar explicit scenes in season 2. It's alright to admit AMC is homophobic. People can complain about it and should complain about it.
And I agree with everyone who thinks that Jarda/Gabriella scene was executed very distastefully. I had no doubts some people would try to it's supposed to make you uncomfortable their way into justifying it though. The bar is low.
And gay people are supposed to be called fetishizers by so-called smart and understanding iwtv queer community whenever they notice this?
oh they're bringing back that old school homophobia!
want to see queer intimacy for once in this supposedly "gay vampire show"? think queer viewers maybe deserve for the m/m relationships to be treated equally in terms of sex? well then you're repulsive, sex-obsessed fetishist! straight out of the 80s baybeeeee we're taking it back to AIDS crisis era rhetoric!
and where are all of these sex scenes for the two major characters from the source material?
"the show isn't just about sex!!" then why are they showing so much sex suddenly? rolin chose to change vamp biology to include the ability to have sex. why does that only seem to apply to m/f/f threesomes and m/f abuse? where's the consensual, loving sex which gay people have? why is it considered pornographic to wish that were represented in a show which touts itself as being both queer and edgy?
missing the point. again. which is about the kind of explicit sex the heterosexual writers and studio are willing to show
mhm
stop expecting to see queer intimacy, you gross, disgusting, killjoy faggots queers degenerates fetishists!!
oh yeah the books! where lestat and nympho gabrielle are always going at it and where baby jenks is a groupie who has a threesome with lestat in an elevator. those books.
oh? who called him straight? i must have missed that
i think this one might be my favorite:
wish that we'd been allowed to see consensual, loving intimacy between lestat and his first love? well they got more than louis did with men last season, you... biphobe?
genuinely, what is the logic here? lmfao
louis and armand having no real on screen intimacy is the same problem we're talking about now! hilarious how people kept assuring me during season 2 that it was out of respect for armand as a victim of CSA and trafficking. look how that turned out.
also hilarious how i was told claudia and madeleine couldn't even get one kiss (though we had to see the attempted rape of madeleine and hear claudia describe rape they'd shoe-horned in to "toughen her up") because claudia's too young and it's actually great rep for asexuals - why do you hate asexuals?, and you're obsessed with sex and you prioritize romance too much and it's more interesting if the nature of their relationship is kept vague and it's actually a super complex writing choice that you don't get back you lack "media literacy" and same sex relationships are actually deeper and more meaningful when they don't involve sex (absolutely get fucked)
these are homophobic choices. this season especially is riddled with homophobic, transphobic and misogynistic writing choices
This is clearly The Rape Season, where everyone's consent/agency is being taken away, but Lestat's specifically. But I found it INSANE that a trigger warning was given for the Magnus/Lestat turning scene (that IMO was VERY tame compared to what so many people made it out to be ahead of the air date), when I personally was FAR more triggered/offended by AMC!GabriellA's antics with Jarda the entire episode--and particularly in that bathroom scene. But that far more explicit scene is tastelessly played for crude slapstick laughs (even as Lestat himself is visibly triggered by her the entire time--but takes his anger out on Jarda rather than the person most deserving: his disgusting MOTHER); while the Magnus Scene is the one everyone was clutching their pearls over? IMO nothing about Magnus' assault was even surprising as a book reader who recognized it as one of the RARE book scenes AMC's even bothered to adapt this season. 😒
Like, I get it. Sex Sells. Hollyweird is never averse to giving a hot white woman a gratuitous sex scene. 🙄 But concerning patterns are emerging, where Baby Jenks and Gabrielle are shoved in our faces with full thrusting bare cheeks clapping action, when ZERO Black/Bipocs/etc have been given the same luxury/dubious privilege of "representation~!" the predominately white Lestans love shoving in people's faces whenever Jacob Anderson can be used as a soundbite to silence anyone with anything negative to say about Lestat vs Louis. B-b-but Jacob said to let Black/Bipocs be problematic because representation is a myth~! Funny how they ignore Jacob Anderson when he also warns that RACISM is a thing that exists, too, and that sensitive topics like abuse should not be dismissed or treated glibly--by the fandom or AMC itself. 🤔 Selective hearing & selective amnesia, istg.
Sex is also a powerful narrative vehicle/device, where the preservation or the violation of consent and trust between close parties is often most explicitly examined. Because contrary to popular opinion (typically pushed by Lestans with an agenda to absolve him of any & all wrongdoing), the overarching themes of abuse, trauma, lack of consent, the slippery slopes of agency/autonomy, etc have all been central to IWTVL since the S1 Pilot ep. Despite what Rolin Jones has repeated ad nauseum, incest may not be intended by AMC as shallow "shock value," BUT it can often be received that way, especially when the writing is NOT strong enough (yet?) to warrant its heavy-handed & ofttimes awkward inclusion in episodes that arguably don't NEED it in order to get the message across--or least not as much of it as we've been subjected to thus far (eg: the Stripclub Scene quickly wearing out its welcome). This is NOT about: Oh, incest scenes are supposed to make you feel uncomfortable~! Because if the narrative can stand on its own without it, then the scene is just uncomfortable for uncomfortability's sake--hence: shock value. 🤷♂️
And that's especially the case when AMC!GabriellA's scenes in the present (sexual or not!) often come at the cost of sacrificing limited screentime better used on past flashbacks fleshing out more of Lestat's character; particularly when so much of his his own scenes in the past make him look like the most passive person on earth--WHERE is the vibrantly ACTIVE "man of action" AMC had touted from the books, and saying we'd see on in S3? 🔭🧐 So far I'm seeing a lot of Lestat either sitting around shellshocked as crazy people yell, or standing around shellshocked as crazy people yell, as he wrings his hands woe is me (don't get me started on the Nicki Scenes from 3x3). And trust: Gabrielle does A LOT of yelling--especially in that 3x3 bathroom scene. 🤢 And no, no one's being media illiterate for complaining about her--it's MORE than obvious that she's doing it on purpose, making a dig at Lestat for having rejected her sexual advances in 3x2 ("companions without the cum"). But that was already clear just from hearing her & Jarda going at it from the studio--there was no NEED for the cameraman (in-universe & AMC's) to follow her into the bathroom to see it all play out (YMMV on the acting...err....quality *cough* 😬). We already got the point. MOVE ON with the story ffs. Which is why it's so easy to tell that some of her scenes ARE overly gratuitous/serve no indispensable narrative purpose; and that there's a gross inequity of scenes given to MALE-focused sexual encounters. Which smacks of homophobia on the allegedly Queer Gothic Romance Show. 💯
And I also get that all of this is leading to the much-touted 3x6 Train Scene Revisit that no one can convince me Rolin didn't literally pull out of his arse when they realized that the fandom was far more critical of him in S1 than they'd expected. 💀 S3 Lestat is suddenly pissed that he was (allegedly) accused of threatening to RAPE Claudia on the train--something WE the audience have NEVER been privy to before 3x1, and what the discourse these past 4 years has NEVER been about until now. 🤨 It's no secret or big revelation that the Train Scene was sus; but it IS an arsepull that the problem™ with it is that Lestat was wrongfully depicted as a monster for threatening to rape her. This brand new Rape narrative brazenly obfuscates the entire reason Claudia was on the train in the first place: RUNNING AWAY.
Instead of AMC keeping the BOOK cohesion of Lestat's DEFINITIVE character arc as a runaway who was desperate to get out of his toxic abusive house to find his meaning & purpose at the Monastery & Commedia Troupe, or book!Gabrielle giving him the last of her money to run away to Paris with Nicki and become an actor, instead, all of those poignant story beats have been either offscreened or jettisoned out of the show canon entirely. Rather than AMC reminding audiences (read: angering already-pissed off Lestans watching THEE Lestat adapatation) that the entire pivot of the series hinged on S1's Ep5 Fight and the Drop (where Lestat was portrayed as a DOMESTIC ABUSER who viciously assaulted Louis AND Claudia and kickstarted this entire chain reaction of cycles of violence into high gear), S3 has instead artificially geared its narrative towards Lestat's anger at being seen as an INCESTUOUS RAPIST towards his daughter Claudia; by over-emphasizing rape & incest as the main traumas dogging Lestat's steps; now being used to cast him as a sex-crazed RAPIST no different from Magnus & Gabrielle; as the victim of everyone lying on the Gary Stu for no reason.
Moreover, production issues with the writing are shamelessly being passed off as memory issues falling on LOUIS' shoulders as an unreliable narrator. And it's telling how Louis' been dogpiled in-universe AND by the IRL fandom (AND even by the cast, creators & journalists) as the overarching antagonist Liar™--being relentlessly & ridiculously blamed for the publishing of a book he didn't even write or condone being printed; the "whoring/violation" of Lestat, Claudia, Daniel, Tom, Dick & Harry--but ofc he's never the victim, I see I see. 🤔
TL;DR: AMC, you're not slick, your mask been slipping
"That's the world out there! They decide what it is!"
Art is subjective--just like the premise of these character-driven narratives is supposed to be, right???? Exactly. There'll never be enough finger-wagging at the "stupid culture" of Gen Z'ers etc in the world for AMC to stop people from hating AMC!GabriellA & her terrible wig/accent & gratuitous sex scenes with her son/proxies; just as AMC can't stop listeners from liking Lestat's songs or not. 🤷♂️ GabriellA is not only a deeply unlikable character (even in the Let Problematic Characters be Problematic~! fandom, which is saying something 😬), but her hamfisted treatment as an incestuous nymphomaniac is rapidly overshadowing far more important tenets of Lestat's core character, that we are NOT adequately seeing represented enough in what are supposed to be foundational flashbacks so we can finally understand what created the man/monster who Dropped Louis from the sky and led to Claudia getting on that train in the first place.
The only purpose GabriellA's obnoxious antics are actually serving is reifying Lestat's rejection of the Train Scene, to tell us what we already knew: Lestat hates incest, and he never threatened his daughter Claudia with rape on the train--gee wizzers whodathunk~! 😮
Sorry for hijacking your post op and @murfpersonalblog comment but it perfectly nailed my frustrations with season3!Lestat's characterization:
particularly when so much of his his own scenes in the past make him look like the most passive person on earth--WHERE is the vibrantly ACTIVE "man of action" AMC had touted from the books, and saying we'd see on in S3?
Yeah, where the hell is he? S3!Lestat ain't no man of action lol.
I've stumbled across this ridiculous interview with Sam Reid
And sometimes the suit that Gabriella puts in him in does… He sort of outgrows and doesn’t really fit anymore and Lestat keeps returning to it, because that is unfortunately a very safe space for him, because he’s looking for that maternal acceptance and love. So actually the actor, the rockstar, the Brat Prince, the leader, all of these things, that is the kind of vicarious life that Gabriella’s built for him so she can kind of use that as a conduit to experience it himself.
Girl. Wtf are you taking about You've heard it guys: everything that Lestat's ever achieved in his life is due to his mommy!
Book!Lestat did things because he wanted to. He killed the wolves cuz he felt it was his responsibility. He became an actor and a rockstar because he wanted to He was reckless and arogant, but he always did what he wanted and didn't give a fuck about consequences. He would never let his mom control his life.
S3!Lestat does things because of his mommy. He needs a mommy to hold his hand and tell him what to do. He's a momma's boy and a perpetual victim. That's the core of his personality. It was his mommy who commanded him to kill the wolves. He wanted to stop the rockstar shtick but mom told him not to, so he didn't.
Is he going to join Akasha too cuz mom orders him around? Who the hell knows. I don't see queen Akasha picking up this sad sack of a man as her king lol. Essence of masculinity, my ass. The only masculine qualities he possesses are his anger issues and violent tendencies. At the same time, he's stripped down of all the positive qualities of book!Lestat such as being a provider and protector, a leader. That guy is not leading anyone, he's too busy feeling sorry for himself.
Funnily enough, everyone keeps bitching about how Louis ~made him a MoNsTer~ but you know what? Season 1-2!Lestat was more in line with book!Lestat than s3!Lestat! He was an abusive asshole but also charming and competent. A bastard, for sure, but at least he DID THINGS.
S3! Lestat is more akin to book!Louis: passive, whiny sitting on his ass doing nothing and refusing to take any responsibility for his actions!
As a book!Lestat lover all I have to say on this shit is: they massacred my fucking boy.
