"there were major systemic problems in that era of the past!"
"yes!"
"so nobody in an oppressed group was ever happy!"
"no, some of them were sometimes"
"oh so the oppression wasn't real then!"
"no, it very much was and needed to change"
"but...if they were happy..."
"humans find ways to be happy in even bleak circumstances. it's kind of a defining trait of humanity. they had to live their lives in the world as it was, even while fighting to change it, so. yeah. they made happiness for themselves the way everyone does, even now with the problems we have today. there were good things in their world, too, alongside the bad. even some things we could learn from now, though definitely not their macro-level social attitudes!"
"...ohhh you're a shill for conservative values and you wish you lived back then! got it!"
"let's go over this again"
i get that americans love their cultural imperialism, but it really does piss me off that june is âinternationalâ pride month just because something happened in the united states.
in aotearoa, june isnât our pride, itâs theirs. marsha p johnson and sylvia rivera are their historical figures, not ours. the phrase that âyou owe your rights to Black trans womenâ is true there, but here we owe our rights to (mostly) MÄori historical figures. i have the freedoms i do because of the legacy of an entirely different set of people operating in an entirely different context at entirely different times.
But because of american cultural imperialism, most queer people in Aotearoa donât even know our own queer history. Carmen Rupe, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, the Dorian Society, Gillian Laundon, Georgina Beyer, and the Wolfenden Association are some of our queer history. We should know their names! we should know what they did for us! but because of the power of the american imperial machine, we donât.
our national pride month should be july, the month that the Homosexual Law Reform Act passed in 1986. our two largest cities hold their pride festivals in february and march, respectively. american queer history has very little (or nothing, depending on who you ask) to do with our queer history. anecdotally, from my own queries, queer youth in aotearoa know more about american queer history than our own.
anyway, happy pride, americans. iâm truly sorry that most of you donât see the negative impact your nationâs culture has on the rest of the world. and to the rest of the world reading this, try searching for your own country and cultureâs queer history, donât accept the american narratives as your own. we deserve our own histories divorced from the cultural hegemony of the USA.
I planted ten little pawpaw trees today
Pawpaws are a Michigan native fruit that looks like it should not be a Michigan native fruit.
I'm told that it has the consistency of avocado, but tastes like a combination of banana, pineapple, and mango, with and earthy aftertaste. They are EXTREMELY delicate fruits, such that they are not really shipped anywhere- to eat them you have to find someplace local that has trees, or have trees, yourself.
I've always wanted to try them, so, I bought a few saplings, and spent a couple hours tonight planting them. They won't fruit for another 5 years at least. Each hole dug, each rootball excavated from its pot, each circle of mulch around the base of them... that's hope. That's a promise to be here 5 years from now, to see them flower, to pull sweet fruit from the limbs and try it for the first time.
A lot can happen in 5 years. But, I hope that you'll be here, too, to see how it turns out.
is it time for frank cho and milo manara to die or what
Thatâs basically a naked woman Iâm YELLING
What a pervert. What the FUCK does he not know how clothes work? What the hypothetical fuck is she wearing then if we can see all that?
Itâs like how bath towels in comics miraculously wrap completely around breasts. Or how even when injured and dead on the ground women in comics have to be twisted into âsexyâ poses. Or how women in comics walk like theyâre in high heels even barefoot.Â
Itâs the only way men know how to draw women, because to them female characters are only there to be sexy. They only think of âwomenâ as exploitative costumes and camera angles, high heels and titillation. Sex objects to ogle, plot objects to further male heroesâ narratives and drama, not heroes to cheer for.Â
Iâm sorry, I was labouring under the impression that this was the crowd that thought women should wear what they want..?
And that applies to fictional women who are depicted by men how? You canât apply agency in the plot to something metatextual when it comes to fictional characters.Â
Come on, letâs not pretend this is a male exclusive thing.
Weâre going to have this argument are we? Not to mention youâre deviating from the original point that attributing agency to fictional charactersâ clothing is asinine.Â
What you have here are images of power, and do you really believe these characters are designed with titillating heterosexual women and bisexual and homosexual men in mind? Because I donât think you do.
This is why the Hawkeye Initiative exists. Take common female poses in comics, put a man in the role, and see how âempoweringâ and âstrongâ it actually looks:Â
Also:Â
He got the painting for fighting against âcensorship.â Note that they handed him a gross design of a female being objectified, because at the end of the day, that is all they really want, to be allowed to objectify women. They donât care about censorship in general it is about their ability to sexualise and degrade women without consequence.
You can see her butthole for chrissakes
I think the best imagery Iâve seen to explain the difference between what men think male objectification is vs what women actually want to see is the Hugh Jackman magazine covers.
Hugh Jackman on a menâs magazine. Heâs shirtless and buff and angry. Heâs imposing and aggressive. This is a male power fantasy, itâs what men want to be and aspire to - intense masculinity.
Hugh Jackman on a womenâs magazine. He looks like a dad. He looks like heâs going to bake me a quiche and sit and watch Game of Thrones with me. He looks like he gives really good hugs.
Men think women want big hulking naked men in loin cloths which is why they always quote He-Man as male objectification - without realizing that He Man is naked and buff in a loin cloth because MEN WANT HIM TO BE. More women would be happy to see him in a pink apron cutting vegetables and singing off-key to 70s rock.
Men want objects. Women want PEOPLE.
This is the first time I have EVER seen this false equivalence articulated so well. Thank you.

Attackers explain how an anti-spam defense became an AI weapon.
love that energy
As a trans woman I can confirm that they indeed found an ancient forest inside a 630ft deep sinkhole in China
cis people can reblog this but keep it on subject, please
Happy pride month everyone always remember that the sinkhole has an ecosystem large enough to house not only insects but likely several species of small birds or mammals
as a tumblr veteran, what advice would you give staff?
stop banning trans women and start banning ai 'artists'
Women frighten conservative men. Any instance of independence and reactionary Republicans go medieval.

Can I be honest with yall I don't want to hear SHIT against cishets at pride this year
"But it's not FOR them!!!" The biggest military power in the world belongs to a christofascist nation overseen by a felon found guilty of 34 federal crimes and has greenlit a gestapo with more direct funding than the entire military of Canada for the purpose of ethnic cleansing. Let Hetero Jessica throw some biodegradable glitter at a municipal parade
At this point if anyone is trying to exclude anyone benignly pro-queer from a pro-queer space I'm just going to assume you're a fed or something idk like something something destabilize the movement from within or whatever
I am making a VERY big point of the Ally flag in all my pride stuff at work.
Feel awkward about people maybe thinking youâre queer but still want to clearly signal âqueers are okay with meâ? SURE. LOVE IT. HEREâS YOUR WEIRD FLAG.
Donât fucking at me about allies right now, they are ALSO actually getting fucking killed over us. Take your puri-gay shitty tent somewhere else mine is great with peopleâs cishet friends and relatives showing up to have our backs.
(âbut what if they -â shitty behavior is shitty behavior I donât care if you INVENTED queer sex, if youâre acting like a douche iâll kick you out. wanna act decent and accept the premises of queer coexistence and freedom, cool, iâm not judging you for feeling ok with the gender title they gave you in the delivery room or being attracted to people with the other standard issue title, grab a pop).
yep yep yep yep
If you're with us, you're welcome. Sure, sometimes you have to wear the costume before it becomes the clothes, but also, some of the best people at Pride are the slightly confused moms, dads, and siblings who show up whether or not they understand. "Love is love" also means "I don't need to get it to show up for you."

Story time:
In middle school biology, we did an experiment. We were given yams, which we would sprout in cups of water. We then had to make hypotheses about how the yams would grow, based on descriptions of yam plants in our books, and make notes of our observations as they grew.
Hereâs what was supposed to happen: we were supposed to see that the actual growth of the plant did not resemble our hypotheses. We were then supposed to figure out that these were, in fact, sweet potatoes.
What actually happened was that every single student in every single class lied in their notes so that their observations perfectly matched their hypotheses. See, everyone assumed the mismatch meant they had done something wrong in the process of growing the plant or that they had misunderstood the dichotomous key or the plant identification terminology. And, thanks to the wonders of a public school education, everyone assumed the wrong results would get us a failing grade. We were trying to pass. We didnât want to get bitched out by the teacher. Curiosity, learning, science - that had nothing to do with why we were sitting in that classroom. So we all lied.
The teacher was furious. She tried to fail every student, but the administration stepped in and told her she wasnât allowed to because a 100% fail rate is recognized as a failure of the teacher, not the class. It wasnât even her fault, really, though her being a notorious hard-ass didnât help. It was a failure of the entire educational system.
So whenever I see crap like Elizabeth Holmesâs blood test scam or pharmaceutical trials which are unable to be replicated or industry-funded research that reaches wildly unscientific conclusions, I just remember those fucking sweet potatoes. I remember that curiosity dies when people are just trying to give their superiors the ârightâ answers, so they can get the grade, get the job, get the paycheck. Itâs not about truth when itâs about paying rent. Thereâs no scientific integrity if you canât control for human desperation.
alright I've got to do some quick math to explain attitudes towards AI to my boss.
we're looking to create an AI policy, and when we were talking about this, my boss (older millennial) was genuinely shocked to hear that younger people do not (seem) to view AI positively (a la the recent commencement speakers being booed)
please rb for larger sample size!
Question 1/3
What is your age, and do you feel AI is a net positive or net negative in our lives today?
under 18, AI is a net positive
under 18, AI is a net negative
18-29, AI is a net positive
18-29, AI is a net negative
30-45, AI is a net positive
30-45, AI is a net negative
46-60, AI is a net positive
46-60, AI is a net negative
over 60, AI is a net postive
over 60, AI is a net negative
Question 2/3
How often do you visit or interact with museums/archives (whether in person or online)?
Frequently (multiple times per month)
Often (multiple times per year)
Occasionally (a couple times per year)
Rarely (once every couple of years)
Never :(
Question 3/3
If you saw a museum was using AI in exhibits, marketing, research, etc., would you be more or less inclined to visit that museum?
under 18, more inclined
under 18, less inclined
18-29, more inclined
18-29, less inclined
30-45, more inclined
30-45, less inclined
46-60, more inclined
46-60, less inclined
over 60, more inclined
over 60, less inclined
Thank you for helping with this data collection. Please rb for as big a sample as possible!
đŤś
I'm going to throw just a little nuance in here, based on that last question.
Generative AI being used to do things like develop exhibits, create marketing materials, etc.: bad. Do not want. I will not go to that museum.
Analytical, specialized AI used for research methods: totally fine with that. It's what AI SHOULD be used for. Counting cancer cells, identifying areas of interest in thousands of satellite photos, organizing mass amounts of data, etc. The sort of tedious mass tasks that are too extensive for humans to do on their own due to sheer volume.
This is an awesome use of what is probably a master's degree if not a doctorate and I am 100% thrilled that she shared it even though it was embarrassing and she squeaked.
Thank you, adorable scientist, for making people's lives better.
As an Australian, THIS WOMAN IS A FUCKING GODSEND.
