Araki really, really, really cooked with writing Gyro. Because of course it's the man who deals with life and death on the daily that understands the weight of a human life. Of course it's the surgeon and executioner that hesitates and thinks and debilitates before finally settling on death being the only way out of a confrontation. And of course it's the boy whose hunger surpassed his humanity, whose "win at all costs" attitude includes endangering himself if it means victory, that brought out a new side of him. On paper, it's almost silly to think that the executioner, the man who has been molded to feel no sentimentality towards those under his weapons, hesitates to kill more than the bo who lost it all. But that's why SBR's writing HITS. Gyro isn't a caricature of a stuck-up, pretentious doctor or of a cold-hearted executioner. He feels. A lot. Enough to risk everything for a child. Enough to stick by Johnny's side. AUGHHH his occupations are SO important to me and to him as a character. And that, again, makes his dynamic with Johnny so so so interesting. That's what makes "Starve nobly!" so good. FUCK I love Gyro Zeppeli wtf did Araki PUT in that bitch

part of why jojo is so special to so many people is because in the very fibres of its designs and names and everything, its intertwined with music. i love how many fans have been introduced to good music through jojo, i know i have, and how many have found comfort or memories in callbacks and references. and a lot of people’s creative processes, including my own, is also intertwined with music, so its such an inspiring series to read and relate to both author and characters.

joy - iron and wine there was a while when i couldnt listen to this song bc of association with something else but i came back to it and BROOO… it took me a minute to parse whether this is a johnny pov or a gyro pov song but ive settled on gyro. ‘i’m only calm when i get lost within your well darkness,’ and ‘i’m only fighting cause you finally gave me something to lose’ settled it. but honestly, it could be either one. something about a little gyro being taught not to feel, to sing, to laugh, to have any sort of joy, meeting someone he can be himself around. shut up
diamonds and rust - joan baez okay. johnny pov. firstly, diamonds and rust. the alternate race was searching for diamonds. rust, blood on the train. this one is gonna be long sorry. third stanza - ‘unwashed phenomenon, the original vagabond,’ hi gyro.. and then all the stuff about the madonna - lucy, they are both trapped in the ocean by valentine, it was gyros choice to save her, the light that radiated from her kept her safe but couldnt protect gyro because otherwise he wouldnt have been able to fight. the bridge that follows is basically a verbatim telling of end of sugar mountain arc. fourth stanza is another description of gyro, he’s nostalgic, sentimental, vague with his past and his goals, and johnny paid with gyro’s life in exchange for the corpse, lucy, and his legs. horribly good song.
suzanne - leonard cohen (separating the art from the artist here) *** verse 2 and chorus are very johnny to me, and his relationship to the corpse, particularly jojolion. his desperation to save his family, his time being a sailor, his blind trust in the power of the corpse. as well as the last bit of the chorus, ‘he’s touched your perfect body with his mind….’ people have mixed feelings about johnny regaining use of his legs at the end, and i do agree it would have been interesting had he not. i think that this verse here sums it up, he didn’t need Jesus to get ‘back to zero,’ it was his own volition and drive of wanting to be *better.* any sort of complex he has about his body is the tragic result of that accident, it opens his eyes to his previous actions and how much his father and fame had changed him from that gentle child he used to be. johnny’s already ‘fearfully and wonderfully made’ (psalm 139:14), it’s his soul that needs healing. it’s a broken soul which caused the result of a broken body, and healing the body does not heal the soul. so maybe, even though it wasn’t necessary, the use of his legs in the end was a ‘gift’ for doing the work to heal his soul in the process, as he can now ambulate without the constant use of the corpse inside him. sure, the corpse marks him with ‘move your legs,’ ‘movere crus,’ but jesus actually *speaks* to johnny about his heart. im not sure if i’m articulating this correctly. i hope it makes sense. also, in the same vein, gyro was ready to give up on the corpse and valentine, and due to that interaction, we know that gyro never needed johnny to walk in order to love him. similar to jesus, in a way. i mean, we already knew this because of his intensely sacrificial and empathetic heart, but… here’s some more evidence, headcanon-wise.. is that too out there..! maybe! whatever!

It was a warm summer day. The heat reached to a point where being outside was the equivalent of prolonged torture so, as an escape, Susie and Noelle took refuge in Sans’.
Once there, Noelle decided it was a good idea to buy her girlfriend some groceries as she remembered Susie telling her, in a moment of vulnerability, that the fridge in her home wasn’t full very often. If this were in the earlier stages of their dating, Susie would downright deny the doe’s generous offer; However, they were in the 5 month mark by now and she was more than used to it.
As Noelle picked up the basics such as fruits, bread, and TV dinners, she happened to notice Susie loudly sighing. The reptilian sullenly stood in front of the frozen deserts section at the back of the store, staring at all the ice cream.
“Sure would be nice to eat some ice cream right now…” She sighed again, only this time with much more exaggeration. To really sell the act, Susie placed a hand onto the glass. Noelle was far from clueless in this situation, she knew by now that this was Susie’s way of indirectly asking for something she really wanted.
With a brisk walk, she stood behind her girlfriend.
“You know you can just ask me whenever you want something, Susie.” She smiled, a slight chuckle to her words. The girl in front of her slowly turned her head towards Noelle, a guilty look on her face.
“Are you sure? I mean, it’s whatever if not.” The faint form of a smile was beginning to appear on her scaly and ragged features. “Of course, faha!” Susie backed up from the refrigerator to allow her girlfriend enough space to open the door, wordlessly grabbing the grocery bag from Noelle’s hands so as to not burden her with its weight.
“Which one do you want? There’s Strawberry Crunch, some popsicles,” the doe expertly listed off the options she thought Susie would enjoy most, “Lemonade Slush, uh, Chocolate Fudge sandwiches–” the moment Noelle had even uttered the word chocolate, Susie was bouncing on her feet, “the Chocolate Fudge sandwiches!” In one swift motion and the release of humorous air out of her nose, Noelle reached down and grabbed a single package.
She stood up straight and unconsciously looked to Susie for confirmation that what she picked up was correct. However, the look on the reptilian’s face did not appear pleased as one would expect. Instead, her eyes were still longing and locked on the fridge.
“What’s wrong?” Noelle’s soft features creased, her confusion evident. With yet another hefty sigh, Susie latched herself onto her girlfriend’s free arm, snuggling close. “I mean, just one? What if it gets lonely. It needs a friend, y’know..?” Now it was time for the other to sigh. Not out of any negative connotations though. “Fiinneee, I’ll get you another one.” The amusement of it all really entertained Noelle.
She leant down, a purple lizard still attached to her side, and grabbed another package. Though, she hesitated before swiftly taking one more.
“Just this one time okay?” Noelle was lying through her teeth and she knew that. An excited gasp was heard from behind her shoulder.
“You’re the best!” Susie shifted from hugging Noelle’s arm to embracing her waist.
“Susie!!!” The doe fell into a fit of giggles as the girl behind her laughed as well. With awkward movements, the two made their way to the counter so Noelle could pay for the food. Susie was still latched onto her girlfriend, a fond smile plastered on her face.
