It took years for him to recover, to grow, to learn that he was worthy of love, he was ready to try to let himself love again... and then he got the owl. Barty knew what it was like to be controlled. His father constantly pulled the strings, controlling every last detail of his life like he was nothing more than a puppet, existing to be posed in whatever way he pleased. Barty couldn't so much as send a letter without his father reading it, editing it, tailoring every detail to fit the perfect image he was meant to fullfil, but when the strings were cut? When Barty was able to do whatever he wanted? He was out of control. Hopping from party to party, getting drunk and running through the streets. What was meant to be his first bit of control over his life, ended with him plastered across the tabloids claiming he had lost his mind. In a way, he had, or at least the mind they thought he had, but he wasnt Bartemus Crouch anymore. This was Barty Crouch Junior, and he wasnt his father, this was him, and that was enough.

You never truly leave a cult. Regulus knew this better than anyone. Maybe he wasn't a deatheater anymore. Sure, he had publicly left the group, misaligned himself from the dark lord, walked away from that life, but it would be so easy to just go back. Maybe he had gotten in a fight with James, or Sirius had been particularly nasty with him, and he would never admit to it, but sometimes, on the worst of those days, he would find himself late at night thinking about how easy it would be. How easy it would be to just walk away from James, and crawl right back to the dark lord. Sure, he would be punished, but they wouldn't spill blood as pure as his, especially when he was willing to go back. He would know what was expected of him, he could marry a good pure blooded witch, play the perfect death eater. It would be easy, but his heart wouldn't be in it. He didn't believe in it. So he stayed, and made up with James, and told Sirius to get over himself, because even though it wasn't easy, it was a life he could be proud to live.

Sirius didn't just walk away once and be done with it, that would've been too easy, more than he deserved, because every time someone told him there was something wrong with him, that he was a bad person, it pushed him right back to his family, to the people that had always treated him terrible, because that was what he deserved, right? They were just the only ones not delusional enough to think otherwise

After a certain amount of trauma you get really good at reading people, this is a curse Regulus knows all too well, he can tell Evan and Barty are dating before they even put a label on it, he knows that Professor McGonagall truly has a soft spot for the marauders, and he knows, he knows, when Sirius is about to leave, and that is the truth that hurts the most

I think all physical books should come with a virtual copy like movies used to back in the day, because sometimes it's too dark, or it's too far away, or I just want a shelf trophy, ya know?
