My only CH5 post until the moratorium's over. Just my some quick thoughts and experiences with the videogame.

I've been getting a lot of chapter 5 critique in my reblogs and I wanna rumble for a bit bc this stuff is kinda all over my notifications page and I think people had a hell of a weird expectations from this chapter.

We were never promised an "Asgore chapter", and, frankly speaking, this isn't something Deltarune even does. No one calls the third one "Toriel chapter", it's just a chapter with a dark fountain in Toriels House, the same way this one is placed in Asgore's shop. Even the larger bits about the Dreemurr family we got in ch3 were what? Two scenes by the end of it? Frankly speaking, Asgore got the biggest amount of screen time and on screen development than any other lightner in his narrative position did (except Susie, since she is a main character).

Toriel slept through her entire trip to the dark world, Undyne was there for 10 frames and even Noelle, who got a bigger presence was mainly developed metatextually (either through snowgrave or the player having to make a mental effort and personally connecting the dots between her mother and the Queen / Noelle having a missing sister and her strange behavior in certain scenes.) Asgore, on the other hand, got a full arc that was thematically supported by the entire dark world we were in. The way his relationship with Flowery and "human" souls develops literally shows us the way his bond with his family rotted away in real life.

I wanna talk about Flowery.

Everyone fucking hates Flowery. Why?

Everyone is comparing his reveal to Tenna's, but those circumstances could not be more different in terms of narrative. Tenna is, from the jump, supposed to be light-hearted and fun. He is the personification of the Fun Gang letting loose and having a good time. This is what makes his eventual reveal that he's working with the Knight into an actual betrayal. If we didn't trust Tenna, that moment wouldn't work.

With Flowery, the vibes are rancid from the moment he's revealed. He's charming and charismatic, but something is off. Not to mention that Ralsei absolutely despises him.

So, why make Flowery unlikable? What's the point?

Well, the point is that Flowery is the exact opposite of Tenna.

With Tenna, we like him, but he's wrong.

With Flowery, we hate him, but he's right.

Everything that Flowery does to Asgore is an exact mirror to what Ralsei did with Kris and Susie at the beginning of the game. In fact, the entire chapter is a complete mirror of Chapter 1's dark world!

Flowery gives Asgore a home, gives him friends, tells him that he's special. And yet, we spend the entire chapter trying to get Asgore out of that situation, with the understanding that it's dangerous.

But what about it is dangerous? The denial of reality? Because Susie is now living in a dark world. The exact thing that Asgore gave an entire heartwarming speech about not doing.

When Flowery tells us that we could close Castle Town instead of his dark world and we would be no closer to the Roaring, we hate him because he's right. When he says that all the flowers want is to live and a chance to make Asgore as happy as he's made them, we hate him because he's right.

And, at the end of the chapter, he tries to defeat us with the power of friendship. The other flowers never turn on him. He uses a mercy attack against us, and Kris responds by hitting him with a sword.

In very brief summary:

● Many of our family members were killed during this war.

● We lost everything, especially our HOME, our heaven, and now we live in a tent with rent.

For many of us, that account was how we followed Mariam's story and stayed connected to the family. Taking it away means cutting off their only direct line to hope and support.

like i love the happy, healthy polycule, but i also am so, so extremely invested in the absolutely convoluted mess of tangles between the three of them.

and that's not even touching on the plot of the game barreling towards them at 300 miles per hour (with ralsei in tow)

like kris "can't have nothing in this house" dreemurr drives me insane because if they do have a one-sided crush on susie, it's another reminder of something they cannot hope for, wish for, or be a part of due to being human, being an 'other'. they're two outcasts who have finally found 'home' in one another, but they can't be together for long because there's a better calling for susie and a darker one for kris. this is also why i feel like kris would want susie and noelle to be happy together, even if (perhaps even especially) if it's at their expense

then you have their relationship to noelle "old habits die hard" holiday. they clearly care for her, but have to push her away b/c of what happened to dess, and in doing so, they see that noelle has a crush on susie for the exact same traits that noelle loved about them (the good kind of scary). they see noelle asking them to leave her and susie be and they already choose to sit far away to give the two space.

and what right do they have to get between their happiness, you know? they're hitting it off, it's going well, kris just needs to march to the beat that they're given and everyone else will be happy.

perhaps they've long since persuaded themself that they're the reason everything has gone wrong and they don't want to do that to susie and do it again to noelle

god i haven't even touched on susie and noelle's parts too.
