With the formalities over, Hakoda bade the pair to come eat and rest before they began what was bound to be the first of several long conversations. Zuko was aware of being closer than ever to seeing his uncle again, and the relief of him had him nearly dizzy. Still, as he and Katara trailed behind the men towards their camp, one thought hit him as he finally processed the last few minutes. He froze midstep, and Katara stopped beside him.
“What’s up?” she asked him quietly.
“Chief Hakoda?” Zuko rounded on Katara, his eyes wide in shock. “Chief?”
“Yeah?” Katara’s brows drew down. “What about it?”
“What about it?” Zuko whisper screamed. “What about it? When, exactly, were you going to tell me you’re a princess.”
“A what?” Katara laughed incredulously. “I’m not a princess.”
Zuko gestured wildly to where Hakoda was walking ahead of them.
“That was your dad, right?” he asked. “Chief Hakoda is your dad?”
“Yeah, he is,” Katara confirmed. “That doesn’t make me a princess, though.”
“How does it not?”
“It’s not like in the other nations,” Katara explained. “Leadership doesn’t follow the family line. I mean, okay, yes, my grandfather was also the chief, and my great-great aunt before him, but the tribe chose them and my dad. It doesn’t mean anything for me or Sokka, though. If either of us wants to take over leading next, we have to be chosen for it.”
“How does that work?” Zuko asked scrunching his nose.
“Well, each village chooses a leader to represent them,” Katara explained. “And then those village leaders come together and vote for a chief on behalf of their villages to serve as head of the tribe. It’s a permanent position, unless the people decide they don’t like how the chief leads. Each chief serves until either they die or they decide to step down.”
“And that…works?” Zuko looked dubious, but Katara just shrugged.
“It’s worked pretty well for the past few hundred or so years,” she said. “And I’m still not a princess.”

There’s a lot of (rightful) criticism out there of Kat/Aang and their home life/family dynamic, but what is your interpretation of Mai/ko’s? How did Izumi feel about her parents?
Well, in my headcanon, if Mai is Izumi's mother, she usually dies before Izumi is very old, so she doesn't have many thoughts about her. In stories where she isn't dead before Izumi loses all her baby teeth, she's a distant mother. She leaves the child rearing to Zuko and the nannies.
I don't think Mai would like motherhood. I don't think she would like being Zuko's Fire Lady. Mind you, I don't think she'd mind being Fire Lady, just not Zuko's Fire Lady, for a lot of different reasons. First of all, Zuko would be focused on people that Mai doesn't have a lot of respect for- the underclasses and the poor; nations that the were damaged by the Fire Nation's war; his friends. Second, the Fire Nation is probably going to be in a financial hole for a while, and Zuko's not going to be living like an emperor while his people suffer. Mai isn't getting the life of luxury and ease that she wanted as the wife of the monarch, and I think she'd start resenting Zuko for it pretty quickly.
At a certain point, I think they would start living as if they were divorced, though they both still live in the palace. Zuko wouldn't want to present his family as unstable in a time when his country needs stability, and Mai would still want the perks that come with being the Fire Lord's wife. I don't expect that she's faithful (in fact one of my fics ends with her dying due to complications with a pregnancy she was terminating because the father wasn't Zuko), but I think Zuko would be, if for no other reason than to not complicate Izumi's life further and make her think that this sort of thing is normal in marriage.
Are you really going to write a Locke doesn’t die AU? How many chapters?
I mean...it might make it into a fic, but I wouldn't write specifically for that. It would probably be a comparatively minor plot point. I do have a fic sort of outlined where Jurdan happened a bit differently, which would lead to Locke not dying when he did in canon. As for when it'll be posted? No idea.
I beg you not to take any of my headcanons and outlines as a promise of an upcoming fic. I do intend to write a longer TFOTA fic at some point, but I don't know when. Hopefully soon, but it depends on several things happening in my personal life.
For my sister and other monsters, do you have any post fic headcanons for each couple? Did jude finally pass the bar exam? Did taryn finally start bringing locke to family dinners? Did jurdan really get married in a castle? Will vivi and heather eventually get married too?
P.S. my sister and other monsters was my first human au fic that I’ve read for any fantasy characters ever (human au are just not my fave). As you can tell by the amount of follow up questions I’ve asked you, I’m kindof attached. It’s safe to say that I will pretty much read anything you write
Aw! Thank you! 🥰Truth be told, I never intended to write a mortal AU for TFOTA, but I really wanted to explore Taryn and Jude's relationship, and it was easier to get them into the situations I wanted in the mortal world than in Faerie. This will probably be the only time I do that (and maybe a follow up to this story).
Speaking of which, I have thought about writing a short sequel to this story focusing on Jude, but I don't know if or when it'll come together, so I don't mind giving a broad overview of how I see the story going.
Jude passed the bar and ends up on the partnership track at Bryern's law firm where she becomes a star attorney. She may or may not decide to start her own firm. She and Cardan have an amazing wedding, and Cardan does get his dramatic cape moment, although they don't get married in a castle, like he wants. They end up having the wedding at a famous old theater that's been converted into an event space. They do honeymoon in Versailles, though, and stay in a suite at the palace for a week and then spend another week in a villa in Greece. They are ridiculously happy, and its both adorable and disgusting for everyone who interacts with them.
Vivi and Heather stay together for a long time, but at some point, Heather realizes that Vivi is a terrible communicator, and she doesn't take working on it seriously. Vivi's idea of resolving issues is to do a big romantic gesture instead of talking things out, or do make life altering unilateral decisions in an effort to fix a problem. They break up, for good I think, although they do eventually get to a point where they can be friends. They both move on to other relationships, and the communication thing continues to be a recurring issue for Vivi (sorry if that disappoints, but I don't think Vivi is good for Heather in canon either).
Taryn does bring Locke around to family things when she can get him to agree- which isn't anywhere near as often as she'd like. He does not change after the wedding, to Taryn's frustration, and Fiona is not the last of his mistresses to pull a "Hey, girl" on Taryn. She accidentally on purpose gets pregnant, hoping that will get Locke to settle down. It...does not. Their marriage ends, but I haven't decided how. The less than legit prenup she forged may or may not come back to bite her.
What are your thoughts on fae moral/honour? It's been said a lot that fae are immoral in the sense of human ethical code but do they have their own? Even Balekin seemed to have a vague idea of such since he accused Jude that she didn't have honour. If I recall Robein also got similar accusations. But it's very unclear what would fae moral/honour entail. Like Madoc was all about honour but it didn't prevent him from betraying Eldred and Dain.
I don't completely follow it, but as someone who loves Jane Austen, I kind of get it? Sort of? It's the wrong time period, obviously. I think Faerie's mores are based on medieval Europe and earlier, but in Jane Austen's time, it was still completely reasonable for gentlemen to go out and duel over slights, real or imagined (if you've seen Hamilton, the Ten Duel Commandments song is very accurate). I think the morality of Faerie and the fae is intentionally murky, though. Sometimes I feel like I get it (not agree with it, mind you, but I understand), but then other times they'll do something that makes me think that maybe I don't understand it.
I think motives plays a lot into determining if their actions were justified or not. The problem with deciphering someone like Madoc's motives is that we don't really know why he did it. We only know what Jude knows, and he didn't tell Jude why he did it. I think he was right about not letting Dain take the throne, but I don't know if he was right for the right reasons, you know?
In the end, though, Hedonism seems to be the law of the land in Faerie and the affiliated courts. The Fae are capricious and impulsive, and don't value life (which I get. Being immortal sounds nightmarishly boring, so you may as well do whatever you want). As long as you don't piss off the wrong person, and as long as your atrocities are entertaining enough, you're good.

In your opinion would Jurdan get together without their traumas? If Jude was not so addicted to fear for instance?
Jude was probably always going to be an adrenaline junkie, and Cardan, as a fae is inherently dangerous. I think they still would have gotten together. I think it would have happened a lot sooner, too.
In the very little time we get with Jude before her parents are killed, it's clear that she was the one who ran headlong into adventures. I bet she faced down her fair share of bullies, already. I think she would have been drawn to Faerie, even if she'd grown up in the mortal world.
As for Cardan, the big chip in his shoulder about Jude was the fact that she was the child of the woman who'd betrayed Madoc, and yet Madoc treated her like his own. Without that history between them, Cardan would almost certainly not have taken so long to admit to himself that he was attracted to her, and his approach would have been much different.
I wanna ask about the scene in TWK where Cardan proposed marriage to Jude. Do you think that was a solution he came up with on the spot or something he had been thinking about and planning for quite some time?
I think he'd been thinking about it for a while. Probably since Locke's revel. I don't think it's a coincidence that he took her ring specifically. It may have been a thought he had for longer than that, but I don't think the intent to follow through came until after the revel. I think Cardan spent the month that Jude was being held hostage thinking the same things she was (regretting not embracing the feels and such). And then she came home.
Maybe he was planning to marry her the night she broke into his room. Maybe he would have had the same proposal ready had they not been interrupted. Whatever the case, I think he put a lot of thought into his actual proposal. It's just too bad he focused on the tactical advantages, and not the fact that he wanted to marry her because he loved her.
Eh...on second thought, Jude probably would have freaked out if he admitted that. Nevermind the fact that she loved him, too. Cardan probably made the right call.
Now that Avatar is releasing new stuff, I see people coming out of the woodwork shipping Zuko with Sokka or Katara. And I'm like, am I the only one angry Zuko and Mai split?
"But they were TOXIC!" Uh, duh! They were toxic as individuals, there was no way their relationship would start out healthy. But their toxic personalities weren't ingrained, they were coping/ defense mechanisms for dealing with Ozai and Azula and the lack of power they had to do anything constructive about it. I was so happy for them that they got rid of those two and so upset it didn't work out
These characters are so similar, but people in the comments will bash the girl for the faults they'll defend in the boy. This shit is why i try to stay away from fandoms. Folk will really judge fictional characters for being toxic and not see it in their real selves
Zuko and Mai are SUPERFICIALLY similar, but if you look past the color schemes, they really aren't. Zuko has his issues, but at his core, he was empathetic and had a strong sense of right. Mai was selfish. She was spoiled, too.
She hated Omashu because she was bored, and there was no one her age to hang out with. It wasn't because she felt stifled- I don't believe that's anything but a retcon. It didn't have anything to do with her family being invaders and oppressors. She never examines her beliefs and comes to the conclusion that Zuko did; that the FN is wrong, and the war needed to end with the liberation of the world. She didn't care . Even her saving Zuko at boiling rock had more to do with what she wanted than anything else. She has no cause but herself. Had Zuko not had his change of heart, she would have been fine staying in the palace while the world burned. Mai represented the status quo to Zuko, and Zuko finally understood that the status quo needed to change.
That said, I'm sorry your fandom experience has been frustrating, but I promise it would be 1000x better if you learned to tag correctly. You didn't need to tag any ship but Maiko, even if you mentioned the others. If you tag the other ships, it shows up in those tags, and those fans will think you WANT to have a back and forth. The tacit agreement is that you tag your ship and leave others out of it, unless you're inviting discourse.
Do you share the sentiment that Jude is Madoc’s favorite daughter?
LOL! I've actually touched on that in a couple of fics. No, I think Madoc is genuinely proud of all of his kids, even Vivi. Jude is the one he has the most in common with, and probably the one who seeks his company the most, but that doesn't necessarily translate into favoritism. It's weirdly sweet how much he loved his kids. That family is so messed up.

What do you think would be Jurdan's weak spot as couple? Like what would they argue/have misunderstandings about?
Insecurity. Good lord, the insecurity. They are very in love, but insecurity is a consistent issue for them, especially in the early years. Jude, terrible as she is at reading people, leaps for the worst possible conclusions at every chance. Cardan woke first and didn't kiss her goodbye. Is he angry? Is he bored with her? Is there someone else? And of course, that sends her spiraling inward, refusing to admit there's an issue until it inevitably boils over and she snaps at Cardan. Or worse, cries.
For Cardan, his insecurity manifests itself in a long, dark jealous streak. He grew up unloved, and his first experience with love ended with his lover and his friend betraying him. He knows better than to think Jude would do that. Or at least she wouldn't plan it. The problem is Jude is beautiful and now she is one of the most powerful people in Faerie. The first she doesn't really see for herself, and the second makes her wary of people being too nice to her, but Cardan is worried that one of her many, many would-be suitors will worm their way past her defenses and charm her enough that she might realize she has other options-better options than Cardan. He ends up being cruel to people who linger too long on his wife, and sometimes it causes issues.
Now, with all of that, I sincerely believe that they work through it and learn to talk to each other. They have no choice. They want to stop hurting each other, and the only way to do that is to talk about it. It's hard at first, but once they get the floodgates open, they talk about everything. And I mean E-VER-RY THING.
There is no such thing as an overshare between them. And the insecurity still causes issues, but less and less as they get to really know each other.
In ur taryn-doesnt-kill-locke au, do you think there would be some sort of unhealthy rivalry on locke and taryns part to prove to their family which couple (them or jurdan) has the more superior marriage? Do you think they would be jealous of jurdans relationship? I think taryn would be, but I dont think jealousy is quite what locke would feel (bc in ur my sister human au fic, locke was kind of obsessed trying to one up jurdan so I wonder if that’d also be the case in this universe). Theres just so much drama potential there I am ashamed to admit that I’m lowkey here for it LOL
Never be ashamed of your love for drama. In My Sister, Locke is absolutely jealous that Jude ended up with Cardan. He meant to stay with Jude ultimately, he just wanted to see if he could get twins, and he was counting on an apology solving everything. He absolutely intended to try to get Jude back and put the sisters against each other, but he just didn't understand the degree to which Jude did not want him anymore. I think that would carry over into an in universe story where Locke didn't die. It's not because he has real feelings for Jude in either case, though. It's only because he thinks Jude is the more impressive twin (on her way to being a high powered attorney in my fic; king maker in canon; more assertive and bold in both cases). He thinks Taryn is boring, especially by comparison (pretty close to canon, if you read The Lost Sisters).
In the Locke doesn't die story, he's got some sort of weird competition going with Cardan in his head. It's not simply that Cardan ended up with the more impressive twin, it's that Cardan has grown into his role as king. Locke thinks that it's all Jude's doing, because he never thought Cardan was that smart. He wants to see what Jude would make of him. Locke is low-key an idiot who's lucky he's pretty and superficially charming.
Taryn would try to be happy for her sister, but it's difficult for her to see how much Cardan not only loves Jude, but respects (and fears) her. It would be less competition on her part, and more envy that would make her try to emulate Jude and Cardan's relationship. It would cause her to not be the greatest sister to Jude. Well...continue to not be the greatest sister to Jude, despite her sincere intentions. She would be looking for weak spots in their relationship to prove that they aren't as perfectly happy together as they seem. She might even accidentally on purpose cause a few fights between Jude and her husband. Unfortunately, Cardan and Jude are that couple that actually talks things out, and the arguments actually make their relationship stronger. It's bizarre and frustrating for Taryn who in both situations remembers how Jude used to hate Cardan.
Do you have a headcanon of what would have happened with the girls if Madoc didn't killed Eva and Justin? What was he planning to do? Would he take Vivi away? Would Jude become vengeful folk hunter after? Would Eva murder Madoc herself?
You know something funny? I think if Madoc had taken a breath and not reached for his sword once Justin completely missed him with the axe, he could have talked Eva into a custody agreement. Eva probably would have been resistant, but at that point, Vivi was old enough to have a say.
We don't get a ton of what it was like for Vivi growing up a fae in the mortal world, but we get little bits. In The Lost Sisters, she tells Taryn about Eva having talks with her about not giving into her worst impulses. Vivi knew she was different, whether or not she knew at the point of the prologue that she was not human. She might have been relieved to get some answers if Madoc had kept his reaction in check. I could see her spending time with Madoc. Maybe school breaks to start and then maybe the summers, too. She probably would have taken Jude along with her for short, and probably clandestine visits (Eva and Justin would not approve of their mortal daughter getting mixed up in Faerie. I think Taryn would have gone once, maybe twice before a bad encounter made her too scared to go back), which would be how Jude gets the chance to start training with swords and dreaming of knighthood. And of course the chance to meet Cardan (their first encounter leaves her unimpressed and him determined to make her admire him).
I dont dislike Kataang because I like Zutara. I also like Jettara, a lot.

And that's so bothersome because his actions are so pick and choosey. He wants to revive his culture but got married? His culture was segregated by sex....but he ignored that (and his other children). He wont kill but hell let a man who has let so many die and had a direct hand in so much harm?
He wasnt just the last airbender. He was also the avatar . And the world needed the avatar. But he gives up the avatar state for a girl. A boy who was raised as a nomadic monk...no. just no.
What was the point of making airbenders monks who lived in segregated temples. Who were shown to have deep connection to spirituality and an understanding of not holding onto earthly tethers. And he settled down with one woman....and has one airbender child? And then continously whines about having to restore his nation....
It made no sense for aang. it was just a fetish for bryke
He brought out kataras child side??? He did that once in the first episode and then she was his mother almost every other episode. Including the only other episode where he helped her "relax" (dancing with the firenation kids) where she literally acted as his mother....
He is such a respectful kid but he literally had outward disgust anytime watertribe food was brought out. He was the living definition of "eww your food smells funny" bullying.
He. Was. NOT. A . Good. Guy. ( and by that I mean he is not what I consider a good (good as in nice decent, husbandable and various other sybo6) guy (because apparently I have to clarify this) (i think hes the "nice guy" trope)
He was a selfish one who wanted things his way. And if this had been written for an older audience he could have gotten either Katara or Sokka or both killed.

He started letting it free because it helped with his balance while he's slyfooting, especially if he's balancing on narrow spaces. It even helps his balance when he's been drinking. He'll still stumble over his feet if he's drunk enough, but if he's just tipsy, it helps a lot.
His subjects have tried and failed to read his moods by watching his tail. At first everyone thought wagging meant that he was happy....until the day his tail started wagging after someone insulted Jude during a revel right before he leapt up and punched him across the face. Similarly, they thought agitated twitching was a bad sign, but very often, it twitches when something good happens, like when he was presented with a really rare wine, and when Jude came back from a few weeks away on a diplomatic trip. Very few people can guess his mood by his tail movements accurately, and they are all in the Court of Shadows.
Occasionally, Cardan gets into moods where he needs near constant physical contact with Jude. She's more than happy to indulge him most of the time, but sometimes she can't. Like when she's presiding over a trial or entertaining visitors from other courts, and she wants to appear particularly cold and fierce, and holding hands with her husband would conflict with the image she's trying to present. During those times, his tail is usually wrapped discretely around her waist or ankle or something. She won't admit it out loud, but she loves it.
Jude will play with his tail idly when they're alone. One time she put tiny braids in the tuft. Cardan wasn't a fan, but Jude combed it out so nicely, he didn't stay irritated long.

Since you think the Ghost had a crush on Jude, do you think he got with Taryn because she reminded him of Jude?
No. Well...mostly no. Sometimes I like to play around with the idea that Taryn was a consolation prize because he couldn't have the twin he wanted, but only when I crave that kind of drama. He really doesn't strike me as the type, though. I don't think he would have gotten with Taryn- with anyone really- if he wasn't inclined to. I also don't think his crush on Jude was anything so serious that he would need some consolation. He was probably over Jude well before he ever thought of Taryn that way. I think everyone has experienced that sort of fleeting crush that just disappears.
For some extra spice, though, there's a version of this headcanon where Taryn knows, or at least suspects that he had feelings for Jude. It's either an ongoing sore spot for them, or an issue that they resolve together, depending on my mood. Either way, it's another complication in Taryn's relationship with Jude and another thing they should talk about, but Taryn won't bring up.
Mind you, none of this is to say that I like Taryn and Garret as a couple. I don't hate it. It just feels kind of shoved in at the end. I could live without it, but if they are going to be together, then I want there to be more to it than, oh! The story's ending. Let's pair the last sister off!

Okay. CoS headcanon rapid fire round
The Ghost had a crush on Jude. It wasn't serious, and because of how immediately obvious Cardan was about her, he never pursued it, for fear of upsetting the young king. But he thought about it. A lot. Especially during their sparring sessions.
For the first year of Cardan's reign, the CoS has a running bet on how long it will take for Jude to realize that Cardan is head over heels for her. No one wins because Cardan and Jude are both unbelievably stupid in different ways. although the Roach tried to give Jude hints because of the amount of money he put down.
Jude stresses the Court of Shadows clean out! Cardan included. They frequently have meetings behind Jude's back on how to get her to sit on her throne and let the royal knights take care of the dirty work. They are running out of ideas, so they just keep watch for signs that she's going to do something dangerous and keep a go-bag ready in case they need to follow her into some dragon's cave or other.
Jude, the Bomb and Fand get extremely close. They are as close as Jude ever was with her sisters, and maybe even closer, after facing down danger together again and again.
After Jude's coronation, the core 3 CoS members recruit and train a small, elite group of spies that includes several humans- one of whom was a detective in the mortal world, and another who was the skilled thief and carjacker the detective was chasing. They are so good at what they do that Jude and Cardan gain a reputation in Faerie for having magics that allow them to see through walls and hear secrets from miles away.
