I’m still interested in hearing more of ur alternative “locke hadnt been killed by taryn” situation would play out. How do you think jude would avenge herself against him? Would she do it vigilante style or would ahe tell cardan and they both punish him the formal way? If so I imagine hed be sentenced alongside madoc, his soldiers, lady nore etc at the end of book 3. I also wonder how that punishment would affect his relationship with taryn going forward
I think in that moment, Jude and Cardan would have had too many other things on their mind to be all that worried about Locke. He would have escaped that trial. I think Jude would remember and be annoyed after the fact, but I think the whole thing with Snake!Cardan and banishing Madoc would have left her so emotionally drained. Also, she genuinely wants Taryn to be happy (like a good sister), and she wouldn't want to turn that rock over. At least not yet.
The thing about Locke is he can't leave well enough alone. He does not know how to quit while he's ahead. Case and point- he knew Jude survived the night, but he still gave Taryn the incriminating earrings. So after he has his Scheherazadean escape for that little misadventure, he wouldn't be able to stop himself from needling his "friend" and making jokes that toe the line of outright disrespect for the monarchs. He annoys them to the point that while they let him keep his Master of Revels title, he doesn't get to plan any of them. Not that there aren't any to plan, mind you. Cardan keeps the celebration for the victory at the battle of the serpent and for Jude's coronation going for nearly a year, but he keeps Locke out of the loop. Even though Locke is at the palace more days than he isn't, he rarely finds out about the revels before the day of. He's being ignored, and it bugs him.
So he throws massive parties at his own estate, which is not fun for Taryn. If Locke isn't ignoring her, he's making her the butt of some of his meaner jokes (he doesn't quite rise to the level of making her the Queen of Mirth, but he's working his way there). Locke should know better than to keep bugging the high king and queen, but he cannot stand the way he's being pushed to the outskirts of everything. He has somehow found himself brother's-in-law with the king, married to the queen's sister, and he is still not at the center of the greatest story he's ever been a part of. He can't handle it, and it makes him stupid and careless.
He tries ingratiating himself to Cardan. He flatters and fawns and goes on as if nothing had ever strained their friendship. He thinks it works because Cardan doesn't immediately shunt him off, and he and Taryn are invited to more dinners and family gatherings. It's not enough, though, because Locke still feels that he's not being included in anything fun and interesting. He doesn't care about Heather and Vivi. He has no interest in getting to know Oak, either. He wants excitement and fun. And one day he gets his chance.
He finds Jude alone somewhere. Probably coming back from training or some sort of spy mission. Idk...the point is she's alone with no Cardan or guards, and Locke takes advantage of the opportunity. He tries to seduce Jude. It's a mess. And Cardan finds them right as Locke is trying to pull a very angry Jude in for a kiss.
It's the last straw for both of them, and after a sound beating, Locke is immediately sent to the Tower of Forgetting. Later it comes out that the reason why Jude and Cardan were letting Locke come to family events is because Taryn had told Jude she was pregnant, and Jude wanted to be there for her sister, so she felt obligated to include Locke. She (and Taryn) also hoped that with a baby now on the way and an established family to join, Locke would settle down. Unfortunately, Locke still didn't know how to quit while he was ahead.
Clearly, Locke doesn't die here, but honestly, I think being forced to live away from the story is a better punishment for him. Also, I don't think Taryn deserved to be the one to kill him, and I don't see Jude or Cardan bothering to do it themselves (people think that Jude is always bloodthirsty and looking for a reason, but I think people underestimate her capacity for mercy, especially when it involves people she loves). Locke probably does get himself killed eventually, but in the meantime, I think it's fitting that he spends a few dozen years in Asha's old cell.
