Adell was initially named Evelyn, born to Melantha and Albus Cyclamen. The cyclamen flower represents a new path from separation, as well as goodbyes and resignation, which I thought was a perfect symbol of this fractured family.
Melantha was brought up in an impoverished family and eventually married Albus for his money. She was taught from an early age that wealth was the only thing that mattered in life, simply because it was the gateway to satisfying one’s material needs. She hopped in and out of relationships for money, even going as far as stealing from people on the streets at times to keep herself afloat rather than actually work. She became vain and materialistic, without concern for the people around her if they didn’t have anything of material value.
As for Albus, his negligent home and narcissistic tendencies led him to constantly look for forms of fulfillment. He would often throw himself into relationships as a way to cope with his constant lack of satisfaction in life, inevitably harming his partners and causing him to constantly be on the prowl for a new source of “love.”
Needless to say, Melantha and Albus’ relationship was a codependent and volatile one. Albus was constantly caught in affairs and Melantha was wringing her husband’s pockets dry, but they still had each other. For a time. Eventually, Adell was born, and Albus didn’t think he had a way out unless he abandoned his wife and child. Which is what he did. He still kept up on divorce settlements and child support, sending Adell and Melantha money to keep Melantha from hounding him, but Melantha was more keen to spend the money on frivolous things like clothes and jewelry rather than food. Which, y’know, you need to stay alive. Melantha’s spending habits got worse and worse, eventually leading Adell to travel to a nearby village for work and food behind Melantha’s back.
Adell lived with her mother for 15 years until the Robo-Pirates invaded the Glade of Dreams. They attacked the village she worked in while she was returning home, and she realized that the only way to survive and live a better life was if she ran. She attempted to fight them off, but quickly realized she was outnumbered and fled into the woods. One of the Robo-Pirates tried to shoot her in a non-lethal area to force her to stop running, but it missed and hit her in the heart. The Robo-Pirates left her to die, as they didn’t see the point in patching up a future slave, but they made the mistake of not searching the forest for Lums. A Red Lum found her, healing her enough to help her make it through the woods, and decided to stay with her for protection from the Robo-Pirates.
With the Robo-Pirates’ power and numbers increasing by the day, Adell’s desperation led her to try finding a shortcut through the mountains via the Cave of Bad Dreams. I headcanon that the Cave is influenced by the fears of anyone who enters it, with the Cave manifesting as her house and Jano briefly appearing like Melantha. Adell didn’t realize it was meant to reflect her worst nightmare, so she simply kept going through the Cave until she made it to Jano’s hoard of gold. While she was tempted by Jano’s offer of wealth, she was more interested in the possibility of learning dark magic to defend herself. Jano agreed to give her a portion of his power, provided that she would neither aid nor interfere with Rayman’s progress in saving the world. She lived a life on the run with the Red Lum who saved her, but her freedom was short-lived as she was eventually cornered by Robo-Pirates and thrown onto the Buccaneer.
When Rayman released the ship’s prisoners and defeated Razorbeard, Adell found herself without purpose or companionship. She mostly wandered from town to town hoping to find fulfillment through work, drifting through life for four years until the Hoodlums invaded the Glade. She suspected the Red Lum that saved her was among the Hoodlums’ ranks, but she was shocked to realize that he was leading their conquest. After years of being lost in life, Adell decided to join the Hoodlums, mostly to assist the only person she could really call a friend. There was just one problem: with the size of the Hoodlums’ army and how easily they spread, Adell didn’t have much to do in terms of combat. She wanted to fight and prove her worth to André, but she was also conflicted on fighting the person who saved her life from the Robo-Pirates. She settled on working on weapons and machinery, using her dark magic to power the Horrible Machine and make it produce Hoodlum soldiers more efficiently, but she still grappled with her self-worth and constantly pushed herself to find more ways to help. The Fairy Council ordered its forces to attack the Tower of the Leptys as André and Reflux fought Rayman and Globox, so she did her best to hold them off before she was overwhelmed and arrested; one of the terms of her pact with Jano was that she couldn’t kill anyone unless they were specifically threatening her life, meaning she couldn’t fully retaliate against the Council’s nonlethal attempts to deter her and could only buy André time. She was brought to a facility in the Bog of Murk that would soon be overtaken by the Hoodlums and converted into the Dungeon of Murk, which brings us to Hoodlums’ Revenge… and I’ll leave you to wait in suspense for a new project of mine, mwahaha!
In terms of personality, Adell tries to maintain a refined and professional (if a bit aloof) exterior, but she’s surprisingly sweet if one puts in enough effort to know her. She’s not used to positive social interaction between her mother, Jano mentoring her, and her experiences with the Hoodlums (mostly André), but she can be very protective of her loved ones. Her cold facade masks a fiery passion and temper, which she devotes to her hobbies of crafting (thanks to the Hoodlums) and playing the piano (initially learned from Melantha, but she came to actually enjoy it). She is *very* British. It’s a wonder André didn’t get her accent when he became a Black Lum and was able to talk. She makes me think of a shelter cat that spent most of its life on the streets; she’s surprisingly intelligent and really opens up when she’s realizes she’s safe, but it takes a *long* time for her to get there.
