reclaiming character designs from an old project ā
This is actually such a crucial part of healing from neglect and abuse and I have to add to this.
Because indeed, people who like you will not roll their eyes and sigh at the idea of accommodating your needs, they will value your voice and be upset with you about injustice done to you, not at you for "being difficult". They will be happy when you find a way to live a better life, and help you to get there. If you are struggling, someone who loves you wants to see you smile, not tell you to smile because "you have it so good".

Personally I think I'm shockingly normal for someone who has spent every day on the internet since they were 12
Finally watched the Addams Family Values recently! and honestly. my main takeaway is
Debbie slays. And Joan Cusack is a QUEEN
Joan Cusack has never appeared in a film that she did not steal.
And as for Debbie, I will always repost my stance on her end.
Iāve said it a million times - if Debbie had listened to what the Addamses were saying in response to her tales of woe, sheās have realized that they understood completely. She had found her people, and was too wrapped up in herself to realize it.
If they could have, theyād have burst from their bonds, hugged the stuffing out of her, bought her a Bentley (and a vintage Ballerina Barbie) and declare her an Addams.
She could spend the rest of her life trying to kill Fester, and heād love her all the more every time she tried. And the rest would keep offering helpful suggestions. āNo point in trying poison, Debbie my dear - heās been putting strychnine on his cornflakes since was sevenā.
they would have been such good friends

Maybe this was just how my family did things growing up but when I was a kid and we saw a lady with chin hairs or a small chest or large feet or a broad shoulders weād say āitās rude and mean to pick apart someoneās appearanceā and mind our own damn business.
Apart from being reductive, transphobic, and anti-woman, all this ātransvestigatingā nonsense is just plain bad manners, and I think we should say that more
I mean to say that thereās a time and place for EXPLANATIONS and thereās a time and place for using social etiquette to your advantage
we can all piddle-fart around for a hundred years trying to explain to conservative straight cis het allo white peri people all the history and vocabulary and everything in the middle of a Starbucks line-up while they argue back about what thing isnāt real and who says what and whoās hurting who, but at the end of the day making snide remarks about a personās body and clothing and voice and posture and mannerisms is rude in a way that you canāt rules-lawyer your way out of.
āBut the shoulder to hip ratio-ā That is a perfectly polite older woman ordering a spinach pastry, Patricia, and why she looks the way she does is none of anybodyās damn business. Donāt be fucking rude

do you have any ideas about why so many students are struggling with literacy now? I know that illiteracy and reading comprehension have been issues for years and most americans read at like a 5th grade reading level but Iām curious why it seems to be worse now (pandemic? no child left behind?)
It is everything. Thereās not one answer. I could talk about this forever so instead I set a five minute timer on my phone and wrote a list of as many of the many things that are causing this on a systemic level that I could think of:
Itās parents not reading with their kids (a privilege, but some parents have that privilege to be able to do this and donāt.)
Itās youtube from birth and never being bored.
Itās phasing out phonics for sight words (memorizing without understanding sounds or meaning) in elementary schools in the early aughts.
Itās defunding public libraries that do all the community and youth outreach.
Itās NCLB and mandating standardized tests which center reading short passages as opposed to longform texts so students donāt build up the endurance or comprehension skills.
Itās NCLB preventing schools from holding students back if they lack the literacy skills to move onto the next grade because they canāt be left behind so theyāre passed on.
Itās the chronic underfunding of ESL and Special Ed programs for students who need extra literacy support.
Itās the cultural devaluing of the humanities in favor of stem and business because those make more money which leads to a lot of students to completely disregard reading and writing.ļæ¼
Itās the learning loss from covid.
Itās covid trauma manifesting in a lot of students as learned helplessness, or an inability to āfigure things outā or push through adversity to complete challenging tasks independently, especially reading difficult texts.
Itās covid normalizing cheating and copying.
Itās increasing phone use.
Itās damage to attention span exacerbated by increased phone use that leaves you without an ability to sit and be bored ever without 2-3 forms of constant stimulation.
Itās shortform video becoming the predominant form of social media content as opposed to anything text-based.
Itās starting to also be generative AI.
Itās the book bans.
what did I miss.
Cannot believe I forgot to also blame charter schools, voucher programs, and the conservative push to lower the teenage working age and get poor kids tracked out of college prep and into vocational training for this. i have let everyone down
There's an idea about how children learn to read that's held sway in schools for more than a generation ā even though it was proven wrong by
Listen to this. I had no idea until @upthewitchypunx mentioned it.
I feel like I'm dropping this link so often and it is really frustrating, but I think it is a huge part of the problem.

our theater for sonic 3 was exclusively children except for me and my brothers and, inexplicably, one solo 70ish year old man. i couldn't stop thinking about him so i drew him with shadow the hedgehog. i hope he liked the movie
It doesnāt happen like that. You donāt just wake up one day and find that everything has worked itself out. You must get out of bed, morning after morning, and make a conscious effort to control the circumstances of that given day. You must learn to handle your issues with grace because you respect what they are attempting to teach you.Ā You must drown your insecurities slowly, one self-realization at a time. You must allow yourself to feel the fear bubbling just beneath your skin but you must never allow it the satisfaction of crippling you; grit your teeth and march on. You see, they never tell you how hard these things will be. This fight to reclaim yourself is not easy or straightforward but, my god, is it necessary.Ā
