I’m Alex (they/them & she/her) agnostic secular witch, animist, 46 year old small business owner, vegan, punk, anarchist, feminist, zinester. https://linktr.ee/alexwrekk NO TERFs. No Nazis (I can't believe that's a thing that needs to be said)
I’m Alex Wrekk (they/she) I am an agnostic secular witch and have built my personal witchcraft practice over 15+ years. I am the owner of Portland Button Works and the Spiral House Shop I am an organizer for CritWitchCon, librarian at the Archive of Witchcraft, Magic, and Occult Zines (AWMOZ), I’m 45 year old punk, vegan, anarchist, feminist, and zinester (itt means I make zines). I identify as white, bisexual, and a relatively cis woman. I love DIY projects, building altars, making charms, collecting jars, filling my pockets with acorns, zines, travel, befriending crows with peanuts, my Jackie Cat, Ian B, my house and home and things I grow in my garden while living in my 120+ year old house in Portland, Oregon.
I have built my own practice and I do not discuss particulars about it very often. I call it DIY Witchery because it is built on my personal DIY punk ethics and methodologies. It takes a hands on and trial and error approach to witchcraft. ie: fuck around and find out magic.
I don’t cast spells so much a build them and then release them. From the outside it probably looks like cottage witchery set loose in a punk house of a philosophy student drop out. In reality, I probably draw a lot on folk magic, traditional witchcraft, and a twist of chaos magic for the fun of it.
I got tired of this being so long so I’m putting a “cut” here.
My witchcraft, as my politics, is intersectional and I work to decolonize my practice.
I do not give away spells or take spell requests, but I’m happy to help brainstorm ideas for spells.
Please note:
I am agnostic
I am a secular witch
I am a “soft” animist
I am not religious
I am not Wiccan
I am not pagan
I do not work with deities as deities but occasionally as archetypes
I do not work with spirits in a way that is relatable to others
I don’t work with auras or chakras
I do not work in the astral
I do not work with runes or ogham
What I post here: reblogs of things I think similarly minded witches might find useful but not necessarily things that are included in my practice, my answers to asks, witch humor, pictures of my garden, talk about the crows that I’m friends with by way of giving them peanuts and telling them secrets, and the occasional personal things or reblog-style correspondence with other tumblr witches.
To get an idea of the flavor of this blog check out these “greatest hits” posts.
New to witchcraft and might have some questions? Check out my “Witchling” tag for resources, tips, and book recommendations to get started. Check there before asking questions because it might have what you need. I get asked frequently about how to start practicing witchcraft and that is a good place to start. Here’s another post with tips about starting a witchcraft practice.
Please check out my DIY Witchery Resource page for more information.
Still got some questions? Ask them here!
When asking questions please keep in mind:
I do not give spells away but I will help you brainstorm ideas for spells.
I am assuming you are asking me for an answer that pertains to my style of agnostic secular witchcraft.
I will get to answering question when I find time to do so
Please do not send messages through the tumblr messaging system unless we have spoken before. Do not send me message for things that should be asks. I will not respond to them.

Viridis Genii Symposium: A Brainscan Zine Supplemental
In 2023 I started a GoFundMe for my birthday so I could attend the Viridis Genii Symposium in the woods in Washington state. I had wanted to attend for years but it was cost prohibitive for me then, so I asked for help and offered this zine in exchange afterwards.
There is no VGS, or what I've started calling it "Wizard Camp", this year and I'm sad about it. It's been 3 years and now I'm offering the zine to the general public!
The Viridis Genii Symposium is a multidisciplinary event at a literal camp where you stay in cabins and go swimming in a lake, take walks in a northwest forest, or even have a camp fire (fire bans permitting). There are lectures and workshops on plant magic, folklore, and all the occult goodness around that. There have been attendees and lecturers from all over the country and all over the world. It is truly a special experience. It is supposed to return next year and I'm really excited about it.
Viridis Genii Symposium a Brainscan Zine Supplemental is a perzine documenting a four-day event at a camp near Olympia, Washington. This zine explores plant magic, animism, ancestral reclamation, and the process of f "making room" in the vessel of your own practice.
This zine is my personal record of diving into world of the "Green Gnosis." From the alchemy of hand-made paper and the folklore of "elf-shot" in Appalachia to the plant-spirit traditions of the Serbian Orthodox folk context, I document the lectures, workshops, and communal discovery found in plants and people.
Format: 8.5" x 5.5" (Half-letter)
28 pages green-on-black paper covers with full-color inserts.

Imagine if sometimes some fucking Ț̷̡͂̀̎͠h̸̜̅͐̄ì̸̩̮̃̃̆n̸̗̰̟͉͐̑͋͆͜g̸̮̻͔̼̬͌ could just crash through the shimmering veil of reality with a trail of fragments from the suffocating void enveloping it, grab whoever's unlucky enough to be closest, and swoop back out like it was nothing. And this was just one of your everyday hazards to worry about. Incredible cosmic horror concept

This morning I woke up thinking about how there should be enough green beans in the garden that I can eat a whole pile of them for dinner!
Also, it's been fun seeing (mostly local) people get small amounts of custom buttons for inside jokes and celebrations now that our website is more streamlined. So, that feels good.

so exhausted by how fundamentally anti-human the capitalist world has become. like ageing, getting fat, being slightly inefficient, and making mediocre art are all extremely normal and extremely human activities, why is every corporation trying to convince us to spend all our money fighting that
Random thought I just woke up thinking about: I wonder if my high school boyfriend's African Grey parrot is still alive. I haven't seen it in 30 years, I guess it could be.

My mom is now sending me things about women with Rh negative blood, like me and her and it just seems like a different "starseed" angle. At first I thought she was joking when talking about it, but she just sent me a thing now. I'm annoyed i have to do research on this to be able to combat it, but i guess it's not Qanan or MAGA... yet.
Back home in Portland and I just saw a cedar waxwing in my garden! I've never seen one in the city. I heard a sound I hadn't heard before and saw the distinctive crest and lovely black goth eye mask. It was really into the hawthorn berries.
More scenes from the Yacolt 4th of July parade. The Volcano rescue Team sounds really cool like they rescue volcanoes or rescue people from volcanoes, but Yacolt is south of Mt St Helens so it's proximity to a volcano.
The ladies with the neat hair were on a Karman Ghia. A school bus dressed as Uncle Sam
The back of the guy with the long silver hair is my father. One float is an arborist with a kid on a tree with a mini chain less chainsaw, another is a chicken coop.
I'll leave you on a happy note, the last two photos are the library float and it has some banned books on the side of it.
Saw two UFO things up here last night. Some kind of light high up in the sky I thought it was a satellite. Then it turned on a dime in an unnaturally quick direction, then disappeared.

Up in Yacolt at a goofy small town 4th of July parade. I thought the patriotic stuff was silly, but this fucking white nationalist float ruined my day. It's a whole bingo card of fucked up symbolism from the christian nationalist appeal to heaven flag to the black code french monarchy flag to the stupid gadsen snake flag.
