I’m Alex Wrekk (they/she) I am an agnostic secular witch and have built my personal witchcraft practice over 15+ years. I am the owner of Portland Button Works and the Spiral House Shop I am an organizer for CritWitchCon, librarian at the Archive of Witchcraft, Magic, and Occult Zines (AWMOZ), I’m 45 year old punk,vegan, anarchist, feminist, and zinester (itt means I make zines). I identify as white, bisexual, and a relatively cis woman. I love DIY projects, building altars, making charms, collecting jars, filling my pockets with acorns, zines, travel, befriending crows with peanuts, my Jackie Cat, Ian B, my house and home and things I grow in my garden while living in my 120+ year old house in Portland, Oregon.
I have built my own practice and I do not discuss particulars about it very often. I call it DIY Witchery because it is built on my personal DIY punk ethics and methodologies. It takes a hands on and trial and error approach to witchcraft. ie: fuck around and find out magic.
I don’t cast spells so much a build them and then release them. From the outside it probably looks like cottage witchery set loose in a punk house of a philosophy student drop out. In reality, I probably draw a lot on folk magic, traditional witchcraft, and a twist of chaos magic for the fun of it.
I got tired of this being so long so I’m putting a “cut” here.
My witchcraft, as my politics, is intersectional and I work to decolonize my practice.
I do not give away spells or take spell requests, but I’m happy to help brainstorm ideas for spells.

Speaking of murder nets, one of my favorite stories about Ian B from when we dated in our early 20s involves a net.
One night in 1998, Ian B and this hilarious guy named Richard were drunk and decided to walk to my apartment in downtown salt lake city. Ian B lived around 10th South and State and I lived on 1st South and 3rd east. If you know anything about Utah streets, the streets and the blocks are huge, so it was about 2 miles to walk.
It was a Saturday night, which is when people used to drive their cars slow down State Street and trying to find people to make out with, or as they called it "cruising state".
On the walk to my place, a street guy stopped them and asked for a cigarette. Richard gave him one and, in exchange, the guy gave them one of those giant cargo bungee nets you can put in the back of your truck.
So Ian B and Richard were making their way to my apartment with their new net when they got to the City and County building on 4th. There were some cowboys there screaming shit that punks always got screamed at and drunken smart ass Richard and Ian B were screaming back. The cowboys started coming at them.
Then they took either side of the bungee net and started running at the cowboys who freaked out screaming "they got a net!" As these drunk punks are running at them. The cowboys jumped in their truck and drove away.
It's no murder net, but it's a good bet story. The lesson is, sometimes a trade with a random NPC could be helpful.

To the surprise of no one, our"potions" portion of Wizard Camp is mixing weird boozes. I'm not trying to think of what amaro would be best in a vegan jello shot.
With Ian B working a few days a week out of the button mines and at a liquor store, we've amassed a lot of strange boozes because I got curious.
Viridis Genii Symposium: A Brainscan Zine Supplemental
In 2023 I started a GoFundMe for my birthday so I could attend the Viridis Genii Symposium in the woods in Washington state. I had wanted to attend for years but it was cost prohibitive for me then, so I asked for help and offered this zine in exchange afterwards.
There is no VGS, or what I've started calling it "Wizard Camp", this year and I'm sad about it. It's been 3 years and now I'm offering the zine to the general public!
The Viridis Genii Symposium is a multidisciplinary event at a literal camp where you stay in cabins and go swimming in a lake, take walks in a northwest forest, or even have a camp fire (fire bans permitting). There are lectures and workshops on plant magic, folklore, and all the occult goodness around that. There have been attendees and lecturers from all over the country and all over the world. It is truly a special experience. It is supposed to return next year and I'm really excited about it.
Viridis Genii Symposium a Brainscan Zine Supplemental is a perzine documenting a four-day event at a camp near Olympia, Washington.This zine explores plant magic, animism, ancestral reclamation, and the process of f "making room" in the vessel of your own practice.
This zine is my personal record of diving into world of the "Green Gnosis." From the alchemy of hand-made paper and the folklore of "elf-shot" in Appalachia to the plant-spirit traditions of the Serbian Orthodox folk context, I document the lectures, workshops, and communal discovery found in plants and people.

@scooter-witch pulled The Moon to and I pulled the Moon revered on the same day. I learned how to make oak gall and iron ink and a Butzemann. We also did some lab alchemy distilling a tincture with plant matter we gathered added to some made at the first Viridis Genii Symposium 10 years ago. We created a spagyric and distilled that into a new thing. We added that to some of the plant matter we gathered and each came home with a vial sealed in wax. I found a triple whirlygig maple seed.
Some of the 9 lectures I attended. The embodied knowledge in the room during these lectures is astounding. There are so many different people from different traditions and cultures and the Q& A sessions after the lectures always thread a glorious tapestry of ideas and reflections. I love that past presenters actually come just to attend and not present.
There's social time and free time and a lake you can swim in if it gets warm, which it stayed around 70F (21C) and I think that may have confused folks not from the Pacific NW, but it was perfect for me. Just lots of trees and people to talk to about nerdy plant things. I will definitely being going back next year and I'm so happy that they have a payment plan that makes it easier to attend.
Butzemann had a break last year because he was woken up mid season. I let him hang out on my altar for the winter and he is currently watching over my garden and hiding in the hops. I named him Gustavus after my great great grandfather who grew hops in the Willamette valley around the turn of last century.

Planning my winter garden in earnest this time. I'm so adverse to pulling plants, but I'm just going to have to do it this year. We need to rebuild the beds so they are less wide and easier to reach across. The east bed shouldn't be a problem and can go first. It's all beans, pole and bush. I should be able get two new beds out of that.
The next is tomatoes that are mostly indeterminate and that will strain me to have to pulls those come October. The next is cucumber and squash and flowers, I might be able to work around some of them. I'm glad the peppers are along the back fence in the keyhole garden because pepper are always the last to get pulled it seems.
I'm hoping to get the new beds in and get some hoops to grow cabbage and friends in this year. I bought some kalette seeds. Years ago a friend in the UK kept talking about them but they are not commercially available here yet. But I was able to get seeds and an excited to add them to the stable of cabbage friends this year.
I need to brush up on my paper marbling skills. I haven't done it in over 20 years. We are planning on doing it as a workshop at DIY Wizard Camp in a few weeks. I've got a plastic bin full of supplies. Gotta see if I still have carageenan and I probably need to get some alum to coat the paper first. Most of my acrylic paint has probably dried up, but I'll see what I can rehydrate.
I should probable start making an actual schedule for wizard camp.
The thing about winter gardening in Portland is that it is basically set it, forget it, then eat whenever. We get enough rain and rarely enough cold days to kills plants. The pests and disease die back. I can just put row covers on the cabbage friends at the beginning and the moths won't get them! Also, garlic that gets harvested in July!

Maybe 12+ months ago I spent some time writing on how if you want to lead a magical life I think a lot of this stuff has to be framed as chores. And I did not know how serious I was.
It is chores. Sufficiently advanced witchcraft is chores.
We are taking big floofy Jack to the vet today for a check up. Our last vet gave us some gabapentin for him because he's a nervous boy. I took Ian B to work and picking him up with Jack in his carrier so we can take Jack to the vet together.
I'm about to dose my cat, he is good at taking pills. He's a good boy, but he's also 18 pounds and strong and the carrier we have for him is the carrier from our out cat who was smaller. So, it's gonna be fun to get a drugged cat in a box all by himself and then carry it down the stairs.
Well, even drugged up he was hard to get in the box and I've got a scratch to prove it. The new vet is super nice! Way better than our old vet. They were very attentive and curious and working on a plan for his weight in a healthy way. We are taking him back in with Buffy in a few weeks. I showed pictures of Buffy's fancy paw and he was really curious and excited to meet her. The tech repeated several times that she wanted to see photos.
It's nice to have doctors/gets that are curious and kind and Jack likes that they gave him "lucky snacks" (Churu).
