America has a weird relationship with cults where they’re terrified of small cults (or organizations they think are cults) but completely normalized massive cults that hurt many more people (eg: LDS Church, Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Amish, Scientology, most Megachurches)
To anybody asking if the Amish are a cult, the answer is yes, very much so.
They’re a high control group that isolate you from society. The cult decides how you dress, how you behave, who you marry and how. They control what you know, blocking all information from the outside world. They control how you feel and what you’re allowed to think with threats of both social and supernatural harm. They’re a cult.
The best method to determine if a group is a cult, in my opinion, is Steven Hassan’s (cult expert and former cult member himself) BITE model.
BITE stands for Behavior Control, Information Control, Thought Control, and Emotional Control.
The more points a group “scores” on the model, the more of a cult it is.
I think this model is the best one for several reasons:
It’s more nuanced than “cult” or “not cult” and doesn’t make false equivalences between groups
It’s versatile, applying to groups big and small, and cults of all kinds, religious, political, financial, etc.
It focuses on what’s important, which is what the cult does to its members, and those members’ experiences, and not on irrelevant details like how uncommon their doctrines are or whether they have a charismatic leader
This is a great example of Thought Control used by cults whenever they’re confronted with criticism.

It’s important to note that almost every sect of evangelical christianity in the US today fails the BITE Model.

high control groups can also form in friend groups and online! any social group can theoretically be a high control enviroment that’s abusive. any group can be a cult if someone uses that group to control and abuse others.

Having your interests mocked as a kid and general low self esteem will have you insulting the things you like even when they're generally considered very good. Because you like it, and historically when you like something it's stupid and not worth anyone's time. So you will say nonsense like "I recommend this book/game/film, but it's okay if you hate it, it sucks, I really enjoyed it but that's because I'm an idiot" and you are recommending them the Citizen fucking Kane of that particular media type. i think MORE characters should be rape survivors. i think more characters should be csa survivors. i think more characters should be dv survivors. i think strong and noble and attractive and charming and brilliant characters with indomitable spirits should be survivors. i think the most powerful characters in the world should be survivors. i think characters who are cultural icons should be survivors. i think victims and survivors should see ourselves in the most admirable and beloved characters around! i think we should be protagonists!!!
#‘it’s so unnecessary’ . okay . god yea this one drives me CRAZY. people will yap all day long about how it's "unnecessary" to make a character a survivor like do you think it was necessary for any of us to be abused or raped irl? was it narratively essential? did it teach the audience an important lesson? why do we, who have to justify our experiences and existences and reactions all the time in real life, also have to justify why we should exist in fiction? people act so repulsed by the thought of us. i've really fully and truly had enough of that. there is nothing so uniquely disgusting or repulsive or unspeakable about our victimhood or our survival that justifies this obsession with keeping the reality of our existence hidden
"oh but talking about it can be triggering for victims :(((" you know what else is triggering? living in a world that insists that we cannot be open and honest about what happened to us. maybe if we had, oh, i don't know, prominent examples in our cultural stories of people who are victims and are competent and strong it might be easier (for everyone, not just victims) to have the discussions we actually need to have about our trauma.

i was in the physics lab today and we were working with lasers, so the Lab Freaks (legal name) were being very careful to stress that we Do Not Turn Around or Look Behind Us because we’ll get extremely blinded by the power of high strength lasers
and i’m not gonna lie it was actually extremely hard to resist turning around. i misjudged orpheus it turns out this isnt extremely easy actually
okay i’ll be honest i 100% looked back at the lasers. actually multiple separate lasers multiple different times. they were pretty

So many would say "it's not that deep" but idc to me it is that deep. Being so insanely hostile against Preston Garvey simply because he wants to rebuild civilization and bring Minutemen back to their prime is just the most gigantic red flag ever and I will judge the fuck out of people over how they treat Preston. Using him being bugged out as an explanation doesn't work when he hasn't been bugged in awhile lmfao. Same people whining about his quest giving being buggy didn't even actually experience what it was like.
I cannot even begin to explain how deeply hurtful it is to see everyone just joke about him and treat him like he's nothing. Watched a character analysis video on him and it boiled down to the OP not wanting to date mentally ill people pretty much bc they just picked at Preston's PTSD, depression and very clear neurodivergence. Like ohhh my god "it's not that deep" yeah sure it's not when people are being ableist AND racist towards the literal beacon of hope in that hellscape. IT IS SERIOUS TO ME.
I think there is something sad and lonely about people who don't understand the importance or enjoy hearing stories. This includes movies. I just saw a post about someone who was so upset why people watch shows and movies knowing what will happen and how it's a waste of time. This hurt me badly. People really don't know how to enjoy a story. People can't handle an unhappy ending. People can't handle bad characters and appreciate the character making you feel so strongly. People hate seeing the reality in fantasy. People hate looking at the bigger picture. I feel as if these same people have been out in the dark for so long that they can't understand why people can relate so deeply to something they enjoy over and over and over again. If the story is good, if you enjoy it, if it's something you like. You should be able to enjoy that and be able to understand that not ever story has to be wrapped in a bow. Not every story has to be put down just because it's over.
Maybe I'm deep into Hadestown rn but it's reminding of what Hermes said "But we sing it anyway. Cause here's the thing, to know how it ends and still begin to sing it again as if it might turn out this time. I learned that from a friend of mine." I think people need to realize that I know how it ends, but I’m going to enjoy the story that leads up to it regardless. I want it to make me sad all over again. Also, if you go back and re-watch things then you'll always find some things you missed the first time which is fun

i dislike the weird jump to blame suicide victims for their suicides and call them selfish. suicide is very frequently in some way a social murder. i think instead of blaming someone who was in such a dark place that they saw no other way out we should maybe be blaming the people who threw gas on the fire, such as those with a lot of power to make that person's life that bad or those who abused them into it. is that really that unreasonable
