The Waiting Game - 16k - “Lily,” Hayden says automatically. “You know about Lily?”

Something flickers across Rozanov’s face. His jaw twitches. “Yes, I know about Lily.” He raises his eyebrows.

Hayden feels like a complete asshole, all of a sudden. There’s just been too much going on to even think about Shane’s mystery girlfriend. “Shit, I should probably, like, call her, or something? I don’t know this girl at all, but Shane’s been obsessed with her for years. If she was watching the game, she would have seen him get hurt.”

“You don’t need to call her,” Rozanov says, and when Hayden glances at him, he still looks fucking miserable but now he’s rolling his eyes, a much more familiar expression of disdain on his face. “She’s sitting right here.” -- Hayden Pike and Ilya Rozanov are waiting for Shane to wake up after he took a bad hit on the ice. They get to talking.

2. Blood on the ice - 11k -

Lily: i am alive Lily: hurt Lily: but they gave me drugs it’s nice Lily: i want you Lily: my hands miss yours or; ilya gets injured on the ice. shane can't handle it.

3. The Shane Hollander Thing - 11k - Cliff Marlow has been on Boston’s team with Ilya Rozanov for the last seven years. Last week, he figured out the Shane Hollander thing.

4. clear to a hedgehog - 12k - Every Boston Raider knows that although their captain has a girl in every port, he’s got a soft spot for the one in Montreal. Dr. Shane Hollander knows it’s better to have a semi-regular source of casual sex than try to make a relationship work during residency. Ilya Rozanov knows that the doctor he’s fucking in Montreal is unaware that he plays hockey, and in fact probably thinks he’s Bratva.

5. decorate my heart - 15k -

“So,” Ilya says, dragging the word out. He’s swiping at non-existent crumbs on the counter, avoiding his eyes. “You have dinner at parents on Christmas, yes?”  “Yeah.”  Ilya nods. “I can house-sit while you are away. Make place pretty, if you have decorations. Make it less boring.”  Shane’s eyebrows fly up. “What? You don’t want to come with?”  Finally, Ilya looks up at him. Hesitantly, he asks, “You want me to come with?”  Frowning, Shane says, “I– yeah. Yeah, of course. You think I invited you here just so you could spend Christmas alone?”  Looking away, Ilya shrugs. “I am intruder here, Hollander. You have family. I do not. Makes situation… difficult, maybe. You forget the world thinks we are rivals.”  “Not difficult,” Shane says immediately. “You want to come, you’re coming.” 

Or: Ilya's in Montreal alone during the week leading up to the Winter Classic. Shane doesn't let him spend Christmas alone.

6. Learning to fly - 11k - Yuna has let go of a lot in her life, including her own dream to play professional hockey. But that's alright; she has Shane and David and they have built a storybook legacy together. Then Ilya Rozanov gets hurt and suddenly Shane's calling her asking if they'll go pick up his archrival from the hospital.

7. Soulmates (or Shane and Ilya winning the Love Game) - 10k -

He knew it stung Ilya, people not understanding. It stung him too. Because to Shane, loving Ilya was like breathing and also like standing on solid ground after years of drifting. It flooded him and steadied him at the same time. It hurt, knowing the world reduced them to a rivalry, a strange story, a piece of scandalous gossip when what they had was so much more. He wanted to be by Ilya’s side for everything, the mundane, the bright and the hard. And maybe not everyone who was in love felt like this, so overwhelmed and so steadied all at once. But Shane did. And if love was a contest, well… he is the winner. Best couple. Number one. Most epic love story ever.

Or 4 times Shane told people him and Ilya were practically soulmates and the 1 time the universe told him.

8. Bell Ringer - 15k - “Shane?” Ilya asks again. “What happened?” His gloveless hand twitches and he lifts it a fraction of an inch towards Shane.

Shane tosses his own gloves to the ice and reaches forward, lacing their fingers together. “You took a bad hit,” he says, gritting his teeth against the fear clawing at his guts. “Flipped headfirst into the ice. Are you okay?”

Ilya groans in answer and squeezes his hand, though Shane can't tell if he meant to do that or not.

Suddenly, there are people all around them. Shane shifts protectively close before he realizes it’s the medical team.

“Hollander, get back to your bench,” someone says, but there’s no way Shane’s going. Even if he wanted to, Ilya’s gripping his hand like a lifeline, eyes finally locked on Shane’s face. Shane isn’t leaving him.

9.✦ Until you breathe again - 15k - Shane Hollander has a heart attack and "dies" on the ice after the hit from Marlow in the Montreal vs Boston Game.

Ilya handles his emotions poorly and has a very public meltdown.

10. If you were gone, I would know - 12k -

Once outside, he leaned forward and put his hand against the cold stone wall. His phone was still to his ear, the message still recording. 

“Ilya. Please. Please. I can’t do this. I don’t know what to do. Please. You can’t be dead.” His voice broke on the word. “I love you. I love you so much. More than anything. I need to hear your voice. I need you to…I need you…I need you…fuck. Please Ilya, please.” 

Shane took the phone away from his ear and held it between both hands as though he were praying. He realized he was on the floor and didn’t know how he got there. He was crying. He was fairly certain he was hyperventilating. 

His brain was desperately trying to grab at anything. Any thread of logic. Any idea of what to do next. 

I have to see him. 

Yes. That made sense. Shane needed to get to Tampa. Now. He would go there. He would find Ilya. Ilya would be fine. They would be together. He would see him. Tell him how much he loved him. He had to go. He had to go now.

OR: What if Ilya lost his phone during the emergency landing, Shane couldn't reach him, he panicked, and chartered a plane to Tampa to find him instead...

11. What they'll see they can't understand - 11k -

It… it was a joke, right? A weird prank? Hollander and Rozanov… It didn’t make any sense. They hated each other! They had nothing in common! It couldn’t be real. And even if it was, it couldn’t be love, right?

Or: five times the world got a glimpse of how much Shane and Ilya love each other and one time they kept it to themselves

12. Lingua Russia - 16k -

“That’s wild, man. That is just weird.” Yannic paused. “You really think someone speaks Russian but is hiding it from you and just using it to do nice things for you?”

“Well, that is the question. Why would anyone do that? Why not just say they speak Russian?” Rodion had been wondering this all morning.

… … … …

A side story wherein Shane accidentally reveals that he speaks Russian while still playing for Montreal, which results in a cat and mouse game with a minor leaguer.

13. маскировка - 12k - He’s already in the room, shutting the door behind himself as quietly as he can before he realises that not only is there someone other than Shane in the room, but there are three someones other than Shane.

And, as if he hasn’t already fucked up spectacularly, the someones happen to be the Hollanders and Hayden fucking Pike.

// or; Ilya visits Shane in the hospital and meets his parents. He's traumatized and grieving, everything hurts, and Shane takes after his mother.

14. It's so hard to believe (but it's all coming back to me now) - 12k -

“My apartment,” he says, keeping his tone deliberately even. Casual. “I mean… it’s close by, right? You could stay there instead of dealing with the hotel nonsense.”

The words hang in the air between them, fragile and irrevocable. Rozanov goes very still.

Shane feels a flash of panic—wonders if he’s misjudged, if he’s pushed too hard and too fast. He rushes to fill the silence, almost tripping over the words, trying to frame it the way he rehearsed in his head.

“It’s more practical, right?” He adds. “Less media. No teammates. You’d have your own space. And it’s only until flights start up again. You can leave first thing when they resume.”

--- After Rose, after Florida, but having barely reconciled since, Shane and Ilya are stuck in Montreal during a snow storm. Shane offers for Ilya to stay in his apartment, and offers up the rest of his heart with it. Or, an alternate take on what happens after Episode 4.

15. Ottowa Centaurs - The Mocumentary - 16k -

'This is what happens when the social media manager for the Ottawa Centaurs just finished rewatching the entirety of The Office for the 3rd time'  

“What a fucking nerd,” Ilya laughed, his eyes following Shane across the ice. The camera swung between them before eventually landing back on Ilya.

“I want to eat him,”

Luca blinked at him, horror slowly etching onto his face.

“Like...sexually or...literally?

Behind the camera, Harris cleared his throat to remind them of his presence. Ilya’s eyes never left Shane, who was still berating Troy by citing some charts from his clipboard.

“Yes,” 

Haas looked into the camera in utter fear.

16. Rose garden filled with thorns - 14k - “I’m sorry, but my answer is no. Someone else might be willing to switch if you ask.”

“I can’t believe—this is unacceptable! I’m going to call the flight attendant over and get this sorted out right now!”

Flustered and cornered, Shane injects his Captain Voice into the conversation. “Ma’am, I understand that you’re upset, but I paid for this seat and am going to stay here. You’ll have to find someone else willing to change places or just fly with the seat you booked. I’m sorry I couldn’t help you.”

She hisses like a goddamn tea kettle, and starts to say, “You are the most selfish man I’ve ever—” when another voice behind her says, “You are blocking my seat. Move.”

Shane and the woman turn to assess the new arrival. It turns out that his seat partner is well above six feet tall, ripped as hell, and knows how to deliver an excellent bitch face. He’s also the hottest man that Shane has ever seen in real life, including a chance run-in with Jensen Ackles at a Stars game.

Or, still!famous Shane meets non!famous Ilya on a cursed flight from Ottawa to Boston and kind of (totally) falls in love with him at first sight (and first chirp)

17. How will I know (if he really loves me) - 13k -

Ilya Rozanov is a natural caretaker. Shane Hollander is a natural clutz who keeps getting into situations where he needs taking care of.

Or: 5 times Ilya took care of Shane, and 1 time the favour was returned.

18. the cockroach of your heart - 13k - Ilya died, yes, but then the doctors saved him. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the ambulance, three electric shocks, two emergency surgeries, twenty-six units of blood. Ilya died, but then he came back.

If only Shane could get his subconscious to understand that.

19. Ilya Rozanov, Fanmail's Worst Nightmare - 14k -

Troy convinces Ilya to launch a Fanmail account..... chaos ensues.
