devin cooley + yaroslav askarov: admirals besties!

“I’ve always been super close to my goalie partners,” Cooley said when asked about the relationship between goaltender teammates in general and himself and Askarov specifically. “I would say always they’re probably one of my closest friends on the team every year, dating back to youth hockey. "So obviously we’re not the ones deciding who plays. That’s management. That’s the coaching staff. All we can do is push each other and try to make each other better and compete in a healthy way. “Me and Asky so far have done a really good job with that so far, I’d say.” Askarov would too, as would Admirals coach Karl Taylor. “We communicate and he is a very good friend and a good goalie,” said Askarov, who is still self-conscious about his English. “I like his style. He’s an aggressive goalie. “He supports me, I support him. We have a good battle every practice, every game …” Askarov paused, spoke into his phone to use a translation app and then continued: “… and we grow together.”
