Wandering Albatross AU™, where they are space truckers (truckers in space)

Riku is extremely social for his species (has not one but TWO friends, made eye contact with someone unprompted once). Vanitas is extremely antisocial for his species (he's in space for a reason). They pilot a space freighter together because contractually there have to be two pilots so that if one of them dies there's still another sentient being legally responsible for any fuck-ups. They float around in zero gravity and play space cards in silence for five years and then one day Riku's suit malfunctions on a maintenance spacewalk and despite clause 212.A of his contract Vanitas rescues him and then Riku decides they're soulmates, which means continuing to ignore him except once a year when he brings Vanitas a series of incomprehensible gifts and tries, unsuccessfully, to dance with him.

Riku's species is inspired by and maybe even named after albatrosses, but since I can't draw albatrosses I thought it would be funny if he looked like if a capybara was shredded instead. I put absolutely no thought into Vanitas' design whatsoever. He's the Wandering part though I guess
