what if public libraries were open late every night so that:
- children and teens who cant get home until a later time have a safe, warm, well lit, populated area to socialize, charge devices, rest, etc
- children and teens have a safe place to go to stay away from danger
- people who have jobs that take up most of the day would still have time ANY DAY OF THE WEEK to go use the libraries facilities (printing, computers, etc)
This is exactly what public libraries are trying to achieve - public libraries as a third place is a whole thing - it’s just that the funding isn’t there (yet).
I’m going to apologize if this post comes off as sounding very aggressive, but having just been through one of the most stressful experiences of my entire career in libraries:
if you want this, you need to be at your local community government meetings. you need to be talking to your representatives. you need to be out there Lobbying.
Just a few weeks ago, my library, me, my coworkers, we had to write letters, send emails, make phone calls, speak at council meetings, just to beg our aldermen to give us our usual funding. Which they didn’t even give to us last year. Losing last year’s funding forced us to cut staff, hours, and all of our databases. If we’d lost this year’s funding? two positions would have been gone and we would have likely had to close on Saturdays. On Saturdays. The day of the week most of y’all working M-F jobs actually have time to go to the fucking library.
And do you want to know how much money we were asking? We were asking for an increase of approximately 13 cents a person.

Fucking.
Cents.
ACROSS AN ENTIRE YEAR.
No one seems to understand how libraries are funded. It’s not just Free Stuff. It’s your tax dollars being paid back into your community. It’s crowdfunding. The highest cost anyone in my community pays for the library a year is approximately $250. Divide that up. That’s just $4 a week. That’s less than a coffee. It’s the equivalent of purchasing about 10 hardcover books a year. For that price, you could have access to every book that has ever been written, a place to go that’s not a bar, programs for kids, teens, and adults, educated staff that can help you find the answers to your questions, and so much more.
You want these late-night libraries? You want all this stuff? Start fighting for it. Start showing up. Start making phone calls. It’s not going to come out of thin air. Start fighting to erase the idea that taxes = evil. Start fighting to spread the understanding that taxes are what help us build a better society.
Make sure the people who represent you know that you want this. That this is where you want your tax dollars to go. That this is what you want them to support. That you are willing to see your tax bill go up a few more dollars for this.
Because otherwise? None of this is going to happen. Libraries are going to keep cutting their opening hours. Keep cutting staff. Keep cutting programs and databases and collections.

A girl no older than eleven ran ahead of her family, the four of them in a mad rush to escape the undead men chasing after them. Her father skid to a halt and scrambled to grab a fallen branch. He held it like a sword as he turned to face the two members of Hela’s army, his son, a year or two older than the sisters picked up a branch as well.
“Go, go quickly! Run!” Her mother ordered, pushing her ahead through the forest.
Tears of fear rose in her eyes, “Mama, I'm scared. I'm so scared mama!”
“Hush,” Her mother soothed, wiping the tears away. “You've got to get away dear, now hurry! Don't look back!”
A loud crack sounded behind them, the husband's stick had broken upon collision with one of the dead's swords.
Just as the mother and daughter prepared to run, the child ran into something hard.
A hooded figure loomed over her yet she felt no fear in his presence. Dark hands raised to pull back the hood, golden eyes sparkled like sunlight as he looked up towards Hela’s men. "Scuse me," he muttered while waving the family aside.
Ghastly emerald eyes locked onto him, the ghouls let out a raspy cry as they charged. Heimdall drew his sword and in a quick motion cut one of the undead across the waist. It fell in two, top half squabbling to find the bottom. Before he had time to react the second undead swung its sword and missed Heimdall by a single hair.
The once gilded guardian used his sword to block the strike, kicking the creature onto its back. He jabbed his blade into the space between two ribs. All movement stopped. Heimdall puffed out a few breaths, hauling his weapon over one shoulder as he turned to look back at the family. Who seemed unharmed though were a bit dazed by the attack.
“Sorry 'bout that, bloody things are everywhere,” he motioned for them to follow. “Come on.”
Since his escape from Asgard's dungeons and Hela's rise to power, Heimdall did all he could to rescue the kingdom's civilians. He made certain they weren't followed. Hela would stop at no length to gain complete control over Asgard and its people, she'd already cut down the guard, he wouldn't let her harm the innocent.
Amidst their escape the ground shook like it was warning them of an oncoming earthquake. Heimdalls eyes widened as they granted him true sight of who pursued them. There was no hiding the family from her or the wolf, so he gave then direction to the others in hiding, and showed them into the forest. In the distance a black speck grew larger and larger till the very trees were dwarfed by the monstrous animal. Hela's dog, Fenris.
Aside her back Tyveri chuckled when the wolf came to a halt, and pressed her belly to the dirt so the elf could dismount. “The sword goes missing, imagine my surprise to find you missing alongside it. I take it you saw me coming?”
“That I did,” He answered in a gruff voice, “and I know what it is you seek.”
Indigo eyes narrowed, “If you know why I’ve come then hand over your weapon, Heimdall.”
“No,” his tone adamant.
Tyveri glowered at his defiance, she knew magic wouldn’t aid her against the gatekeeper. Where she possessed strong magic he possessed even stronger brawn. He'd fight her no matter what she did or said. She dropped onto stump and elegantly folded her hands over the skirts of her dress. Despite being enemies the elf regarded the man in the highest respects, he was loyal to a fault, even if such loyalty was his undoing.
She sighed and rubbed her wrist, “I did hope we could resolve this like civilized people, but-”
“What you feel for her isn't love. You think it is, but it is not.”
A chuckle rattled her throat, Tyveri perked a challenged brow, “indulge me as to how you came by that impression?”
“I know you, Svartálfar. Perhaps better than you know yourself. Your people perished by the hands of Odin's bloodline, your vengeance lies with them, not the innocence of Asgard,” he defended.
“There are no innocence,” Tyveri's every word dripped with venom. “The strong reign supreme and the weak die terrible deaths. Those you safeguard have made their choice, they've chosen rebellion over obedience.”
“Were you not innocent yourself once? Your mission, the true reason you fight, is to have vengeance for your people, is it not?” Heimdall challenged, “If you slay every Asgardian how do you differ from Odin, how does she?”
Ice froze the blood in her veins. She wanted to deny it but the more thought she put into it, what Heimdall said was true. How did her actions make her any better than Odin? Hela herself had even started to follow in his footsteps by banishing the princes, locking them away as Odin had done to her, to them. Would Hela do the same to her in time? Her face contorted in a snarl. No, Heimdall was trying to trick her. Plant doubt in her mind in a vain attempt to turn her against the goddess of death.
“You try my patience, gatekeeper. I will give you a final chance to surrender the sword willingly before I take it from you,” Tyveri held her hands at her sides, a violet hue engulfed them.
“She must be stopped,” he raised his sword with a sharpened glare in his eyes. “I will not let another fall by her hand.”
An inky tendrils sprouted from her palm and shot forward, “so be it.”

Tyveri returned to the palace with blood stained hands, failure riddled in her expression. She hadn't returned with the sword, but as promised to Hela, the elf gathered the ingredients needed to form the portal.
Rather than summon it, she fell to her knees in the palace library. Runes of violet, emerald, and gold danced around like leaves on a gentle breeze. Tyveri sat at the center of them. Her head bowed with eyes closed so she could better listen to the magic as it spoke, her hands raised in a slow motion. Blue fingers reached out to tap the runes in various patterns, almost like a game of connect-the-dots.
In her mind's eye a winter wasteland appeared, Thor's barbarian figure huddled beneath his crimson cape to keep warm. His chains still intact. The image shifted to the Isle of silence where Loki's rage hung heavier than the fog, his chains still intact as well. Dark eyes opened and as they did the runes vanished.
Heimdalls words haunted her and she hated him for it.
Had she truly lost her way? Lost sight of her original mission?
Both women wanted the same thing, revenge for the injustice done onto them. Hela for Odin writing her out of the history books. Tyveri for the decimation of her entire race. Perhaps...their paths weren't as entwined as she initially thought. Could Tyveri have gotten so wrapped up in Hela's version of revenge that she'd forgotten her own?
Queen Alflyse’s words echoed in the back of her mind as she withdrew the crown from her head, staring into the gems as if begging for any sort of guidance.
I may die here but the legacy of the Svartálfar will live on.
Those were the Queen’s last words to her. Tyveri’s heart had always been set on rebuilding the Dark Elven empire, would her service to Hela ensure or hinder that? Indigo eyes darkened till her pupils faded from sight. She didn't know what to do.
She didn’t understand where it all went wrong.
A sense of unease held her with such a vice she almost couldn’t breathe. Tyveri believed in Hela and her claim to the throne. She’d stood by her for centuries before Odin tore them apart, and yet she couldn’t shake her sense of doubt.
Loki had promised her a place at his side to watch the world's burn.
Hela promised her nothing.
She scoffed at the thought of going to free him, he'd likely slit her throat the first chance he got.
Betraying Loki had been child's play because he was nothing more than a spoiled child.
Tyveri rose from her knelt place amongst the runes she’d drawn, placing Queen Alflyse’s crown upon her head, she held her chin high. The elf conjured a portal not for Hela’s army, but one for herself instead. No longer would she serve another's purpose. To execute another person's vision.
If she wanted to betray Hela. She'd have to play her cards right. She'd have to find power stronger than her own.

How is it that article from a while back phrased it: “Tolerance is not a moral precept it’s a peace treaty”
It’s not a paradox. Tolerance is an agreement and an exchange and if you break it you don’t get to be protected by it and you will suffer the consequences of breaking it. Period.
Tolerance cannot extend to intolerance and bigotry because they are antithetical to the entire framework of the exchange and exist to destroy the people and things that tolerance/acceptance is meant to build and protect.
So no. It is not hypocritical to be intolerant of your bigotry. I am simply enforcing the boundaries and consequences of breaking the social contract of treating people with compassion and humanity, if you broke the treaty, you don’t get to be protected by it, and enforcing consequences for breaking it is the only way to ensure that it continues to protect those it’s meant to and who contribute to it in good faith.

Like that episode was very good about addressing toxic behaivor from people who are supposedly woke or whatever.

TL;DR: we’re living under a dictatorship. people are currently protesting the deaths caused by decisions the government made while prioritising the election over human lives. mainstream news are making it seem like the protesters are hooligans who are protesting new safety measures and not the dictatorship they refuse to even acknowledge.
THE LEAD-UP
here’s a brief list of things that caused the people to protest:
the elections have been rigged since the moment aleksandar vučić became president. not even in a relatively subtle way like in the usa (gerrymandering), but by literally replacing sacks of voting papers with ones that are voting for sns (srpska narodna stranka, the president’s party)
we were lied to about when the first covid-19 case appeared in serbia. the government withheld information from us because it benefited them.
also, about a week before the lockdown, the president made fun of the virus, encouraging people to “go shop in milano if they want”. when the situation got serious, he shifted the blame to the people.
hospitals all around the country were and still are severely underfunded. they’re reusing masks, don’t have enough space for all the patients, and the tests we’re still given aren’t accurate.
the lockdown was lifted prematurely because of the parliamentary elections. if you look up “serbia covid19 cases” on google, you’ll see that the second wave started around june 21st, which is when the election was.
right after the election was over, the government set extreme safety measures, including: police enforced lockdown fri-sun, an attempt to force all belgrade students out of their dorms during exam season, etc.
THE PROTESTS
last night (july 7th), there was a huge unorganized protest outside of the belgrade parliament building.
as expected, the police turned it into a violent protest. they used tear gas 26 times, attacked people who weren’t even protesting, and used unnecessary force against those who were. a man was choked the same way george floyd was.
only n1 (cnn’s channel) actually informed people that this was happening, and their website was down all night last night. every other network was airing their usual program, since they’re controlled by the government.
the people got into the parliament building a few times, but were ultimately forced out violently by the police.
there were protests in other cities too, but they weren’t as large.
rts (the most watched channel in the country) is putting all the blame on the protesters and making it seem as if they’re protesting the new safety measures, and not the dictatorship of aleksandar vučić.
every other international news source is pretty much doing the same.
WHAT NOW?
the protests will continue. in case they’re successful, there will be another election, one that won’t put only sns members in the parliament (they make up more than 70% as of right now).
in case they’re not successful, we’ll be expecting a change of the constitution that will state that there’s no limit to how many terms a president can have. we’ll live under complete dictatorship.
the most you, outside of serbia, can do is share correct information and spread awareness about what’s happening.
