Won't you help me Doctor Three 🎓
I do love how the reader gets a WILDLY different first impression of Cordelia's career based on what books you start with. If you start with Shards of Honor, you get her as a narrator and she portrays her role in the Astronomical Survey so matter-of-factly that you go okay. this is just a job people have in this sci-fi universe, exploring unknown planets. clearly it has its dangers even when hostile Barrayarans aren't involved, and she's in charge of people and obviously good at it, but she doesn't really act like it's anything remarkable.
If you start with a book that has literally any other character's perspective when talking about Cordelia's career, you get the additional context that the Astronomical Survey is insanely dangerous, involves jumping blind through wormholes, has a highly prestigious reputation, and being a genius daredevil is pretty much a requirement to get in.
no wonder Miles describes her fearlessness as "terrifying"
About the only character who really understands what job she had is Enrique Borgos.

I deeply appreciate that Dr. Mensah Goes To Therapy For The Whole “Being Kidnapped And Almost Murdered” Thing is an important plot point depicted with sympathy and emotional weight
but can you IMAGINE being her therapist
Therapist: it’s in the past. The corporate powers can’t reach you on Preservation. Your reactions are designed to keep you alive and aware of it happening again, but they take root even where they are no longer needed; process them, thank them, and let them know they can’t harm you. Know that you are safe, Preservation is safe, and it won’t happen again. You can be able to say, is this fear supported by my present reality? No one is going to get kidnapped.
Mensah: hang on I’m getting a call I have to take this
Mensah:
Mensah: my daughter, my brother-in-law, and several of my friends just got kidnapped by murderous raiders

On a scale from liking someone (but not in a weird way) to threatening to blow up a planetary colony, how normal are you about your friends?
"what fool in their right mind would put me in charge of a baby. two babies!"

i love murderbot's constant habit of being like. what they just said was mean. not that it hurt my feelings because i don't have feelings i'm not a stupid human. but it was mean. they're mean and i hate them. but not because they're mean. just because they're stupid. but don't be mistaken. what they said was mean.

everything is a reference when you're crazy
i'm rereading the murderbot diaries and murderbot's utter conviction that it and gurathin are bitter enemies is still so funny. buddy. gurathin got over this months ago. he's just a quiet guy.
one-sided antagonism is so delicious. murderbot diaries i also very much enjoy how surreal it must be for gurathin /  to know that the heavily armed rogue secunit holds a grudge against him / and also know that all it will ever choose to do about this is make frowny faces and flip him the bird. / (tags via space-mouse)
Gurathin, like three books from now: hey we’re friends right
Murderbot: no. we fucking hate each other.
Gurathin: awesome check this out it’s gonna make you so fucking mad
MB: I don’t like you
Gurathin, knowing MB calls its best friend “asshole research transport”: Uh-huh.
MB: in order to do my job I need help committing a felony(s)
Gurathin: terrible plan, I'll get my coat
