Says Mattai, "The original tapestry depicts an idealistic 'colonial' space, one of wealth and recreation. I disrupt this space and create a new narrative embroidered over the figures and adding new elements related to South Asian and Caribbean cultures, such as the bindis and beads in vibrant colors.
