F1: The Movie
After the first few minutes of this flick, before the credits roll, you already pretty much know what your about to see unfold over the next 2.5 hours. It isn't that Joseph Kosinski isn't a director who can keep you interested, but the story is, well, just far too pat. And the tricks of his trade are so well known it might as well be Top Gun but with cars. Much like that massive grosser, we get the inside perspective of the F1 racers and the behind-the-scenes aspects of their design, care, and feeding, as it were. Interesting, sure. Especially if you're an F1 fan. It isn't that it doesn't have its moments, it just doesn't have enough of a complete throughline to matter in a more expansive way. Not enough emotion. At least Top Gun had some emotion and political intrigue going for it. F1 may still be entertaining for the right audience, but it just isn't a good movie. Brad Pitt (Wolfs) is amusing. Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos), Kim Bodnia (Killing Eve), and Kerry Condon (Banshees of Inisherin) in particular all add some nice levels, but there just isn't enough story. And I can't say that Damson Idris brought anything to the story that made me like it more. To be fair, I think that was more the writing and directing than the young actor's efforts. Though it was also nice to see Sarah Niles (Heads of State) as his strong mother in the mix. Basically, this is simply a ride. If you enjoy F1 races, you'll love it. If you know nothing about F1, you'll likely be intrigued and even a bit educated. If you have no interest in the sport at all...you'll be bored out of your skull. Despite some of the boardroom drama, this isn't Ford v. Ferrari, which walked these lines a lot better. So decide where you are on the spectrum and make your choice. Kosinski knows how to make a tense chase movie, but he seemed to have left out too much in this case. Where to watch

[3 stars] There a lot of beautiful little truths in Michael J. Weithorn’s latest delivery. It doesn’t really come together into a solid whole, but the latticework it does make is enough for a heartwarming journey. Of course, much of that is the cast. There a lot of beautiful little truths in Michael J. Weithorn's latest delivery. It doesn't really come together into a solid whole, but the latticework it does make is enough for a heartwarming journey. Of course, much of that is the cast. Kevin Bacon (Beverly Hills Cop: Axle F) leads that pack, despite the intention of it being an ensemble. But Judd Hirsch (The Fabelmans) and Brittany O'Grady (The Consultant) give him some nice friction to rub against. And Meera Rohit Kumbhani (Dave Made a Maze) has a nicely understated role as well. But the intention was for Kyra Sedgwick (Bad Shabbos) to be his counter-part. And they make a fun pairing, which isn't a surprise given their off-screen marriage. But Sedgwick just isn't a credible Urologist; not even a little. That gap pulls the rug out from her character almost completely. Fortunately the others overbalance the effect and leave us with a good story...especially by the end. Weithorn delivers a light distraction with a few solid heart-punches that make it worth the trip. Just don't go looking for either perfection or a classic and you'll be fine. It's not at the level of a Hallmark movie, but it isn't too far off either. Where to watch
