“Spin the bottle!” Kaye stood over the circle of friends, “Now, now, don’t be such killjoys! It’s the year end party!” Her eyes hovered over Rachel.
Rachel pretended she did not notice it and instead looked at the empty bottle in the middle of the center.
“Alright, alright!” Gloria gleefully spun the bottle. Rachel watched and went with the laughter, the ooh’s and ahh’s with the revelation and jokes thrown across.
The bottle was spun again. “Rachel!” They called as the open end pointed at her. The bottom end was facing Jason.
“Jason gets to ask dear Rachel!” Kaye said after downing her nth glass.
This was a bad idea, Rachel knew. Bad bad idea. She shouldn’t have joined. Or shouldn’t have gone here. But she can’t back out now.
Rachel tried to look Jason on the eyes, but he was hard to read. Heck, she can never read people. She’s too preoccupied on reading what she feels.
“Have you felt something?”
He caught her offguard, “W—what?” Their circle was encased of ‘ooh’s’.
“We talked—last Christmas—did you—“
She sighed, “Yes.” She’s been keeping it a secret for months. She was not an expressive person. “I—I—did you mean it?”
“Oh, oh!” Kaye interrupted, “Only Jason gets to ask—“
“Yes,” Jason answered. “I meant it.”
Rachel managed to look at him. She smiled sadly, “You didn’t even know—you hurt me badly.”
