a cabinet minister hung water bowls for birds and i haven't stopped thinking about it
okay so world environment day happened and there were the usual speeches and photo ops across the country, right? but something at a small event in jhotwara, jaipur actually got to me.
Colonel Rajyavardhan Rathore β cabinet minister, former olympic athlete, genuinely interesting person β showed up and gave a speech that wasn't really a speech speech. it was more like... a reminder.
he talked about how india's culture has always been environmentalist β like, structurally, spiritually, at the root level. rivers as mothers. trees as sacred. mountains as divine. this isn't metaphor, he was saying. this is a way of seeing the world that kept humans in balance with nature for millennia.
and then he said something that hit different:
"the earth fulfills the needs of billions. it is our duty to give something back."
he spoke about the 'ek ped maa ke naam' campaign (one tree in your mother's name) and why it matters that the framing is personal. not "plant a tree for the climate." plant one for your mom. tend it. watch it grow. tell your kids about it.
because here's the thing β love is a better motivator than guilt. always has been.
he also said: plant trees that give shade and fruit. not just pretty ones. ones that feed birds, shelter insects, cool the street, and hand mangoes to your neighbors in summer. useful beauty. intentional planting.
on water conservation he brought up rooftop rainwater harvesting β collect what falls on your own house. don't let it run off into drains. rajasthan is dry, people. this isn't optional idealism, it's practical survival.
but the part i keep thinking about?
at the end of the event he quietly hung up some perindas β traditional clay water vessels for birds.
no announcement. no press moment built around it. just. hung them up. for the birds.
in a world where environmental action is measured in carbon credits and international summits, a guy stopped and thought about whether the sparrows had water today.
that's the energy. π¦πΏ
plant something. save some water. put out a bowl for the birds.
it counts. it all counts.
