National Alligator Day
In the swamps and wetlands of the American South, some ancient reptiles silently patrol the waters, showcasing nature's remarkable adaptability.
Get excited about these amazing social creatures who are also sneaky predators, alligators are super interesting creatures and one of the largest lizards in the world. National Alligator Day is here to celebrate and show appreciation for these fascinating reptiles!
History of National Alligator Day
Some historians have stated that alligators can be traced back to tens of millions of years ago! And while there were no humans around to see them at the time, there were many species of this part of the lizard family called alligators. Now, though, they are made up of only two different species that remain, named after the places where they live: America and China. American alligators are often larger and heavier than the version found in China.
In the United States, the American Alligator, sometimes called “gators”, appears in a number of the southeastern region, including all throughout Florida and Louisiana as well as a number of other states including Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama and all the way over to east Texas. In addition to the ones that roam free in various places throughout this region, some alligators are also raised commercially with products being made from their skin (boots, wallets, etc.) as well as their meat.
The name for the alligator may be an anglicized version of the Spanish term for lizard, which is “el lagarto.” And because the animal is native to the southern parts of the US, some of which were originally explored and settled by Spanish conquistadors, it makes sense that the name would come with these roots.
National Alligator Awareness Day is a fairly recent event that was founded in 2021 by the Wild Florida Safari Park. The purpose of the day is about raising awareness regarding the importance of not only alligators but all of the animal and plant life that co-exists in Florida’s ecosystem. And since alligators reside in all 67 of the state’s counties, they are a premier part of the landscape there.
Alligators have also become part of tourist attractions in several southeastern states, including Florida, with parks and tours where alligators and other reptiles are some of the main features. In fact, alligators are so popular in this state that the mascot for the University of Florida, located in Gainesville, is the Gator.
National Alligator Awareness Day offers a delightful opportunity for fans big and small to show appreciation for and celebrate the enticing elements of alligators.
How to Celebrate National Alligator Day
Find loads of fun and excitement in celebrating National Alligator Day by joining in on some delightful activities that are centered around these reptiles. Make some plans of your own or check out some of these ideas:
Learn Alligator Safety Etiquette
While alligators are not usually aggressive toward humans, they are still very powerful creatures that require some care when humans are around them. Some important factors are involved when people find themselves in the vicinity of alligators, including never feeding them so that they maintain their fear of humans.
Other sensible and best safety practices about alligators include:
Stay at least 50 feet away from an alligator because they are very fast runners – definitely faster than humans.
If an alligator is in the road, do not try to move it, attempt to scare it or throw things at it.
Avoid swimming in areas that are well known to be habitats for alligators.
Female alligators are very protective, so be especially careful not to disturb nests or very young alligators.
Visit an Alligator Park or Farm
Those folks who are interested in getting up close and personal with alligators might find that National Alligator Day is a great time to do it! These can be found in a number of different states in the southeastern portion of the US. And some of them may offer free or discounted admission to visitors in celebration of this day. Check out some of these fun parks that feature alligators:

Alligator Adventure in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This park refers to itself as the ‘Reptile Capital of the World’, providing interactive exhibits, shows and many other attractions.
Gator Country in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Visitors to this alligator park can wade with gators, enjoy a feeding show, handle alligators and other reptiles, and enjoy other activities.
Learn Fun Facts About Alligators
In honor of National Alligator Day, it might be fun to learn some fun and interesting bits of information about alligators so that it can then be shared to raise awareness for the day! Get started with some of these fascinating facts about alligators:
Alligators can go through around 3,000 teeth in their lifetime! As each tooth is worn down from use, it is replaced by new teeth.
Alligators need to swim in freshwater. Unlike crocodiles, these creatures don’t have the glands to excrete salt from their bodies, so they might be found near saltwater but not in it.
The largest alligator ever was more than 15 feet long and weighed more than 1000 pounds.
Before an alligator is born, its gender is determined by the temperature of the nest – if it is warm, then the alligator will be male and if it is cool then the babies will be female.
Watch Some Alligator Movies or Shows
Those who are looking for entertainment to share with friends or family might want to watch some movies that include alligators and crocodiles. For some reason, most of the moves that include or feature alligators and crocodiles are horror movies, so it might be a bit challenging to find some that aren’t scary. But for those who enjoy a good horror movie, National Alligator Day can be a good time to watch them!

National Junk Food Day
Junk foods are usually, by definition, high in fats, sugars, salt, and calories. But more often than not, they are delicious! Junk food day is the perfect day to treat yourself. On Junk Food Day, you get to eat anything you want. Eat any amounts that you want, too. Tomorrow, however, it’s back to a healthy diet.
It doesn’t have to be candies either. Like bacon? Eat so much bacon! Like chili cheese dogs? Eat all the dogs you want. Onion rings, yes please. Pizza? Have it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Junk Food Day is all about indulging in your favorites.
Please Note: Junk food may be hazardous to your health. After all, mom knows what’s best for you. Do so at your own risk. That risk includes having too much and Mom saying: “I told you so!”
Learn about Junk Food Day
Junk Food Day is a day that allows you to chow down on the foods that you usually would not. Junk foods, by their definition, tend to contain a lot of calories, salt, sugar, and fats, and they offer very nutritional value. You may think that it doesn’t do anyone any favors to have a day that is dedicated to junk food.
However, if you follow a healthy and balanced diet, there is nothing wrong with having one day of the year whereby you can eat anything that you want to. In fact, this is encouraged, because it means that you are more likely to eat healthily the rest of the time, right? Of course, it is up to you whether or not you decide to fully embrace Junk Food Day, but we know that we will be!
History of Junk Food Day
Upon searching for the history behind this food filled day, we found no information on the origin of this day. It was most likely created by a diet conscious individual or group who desired to eat junk food, without guilt, at least one day a year, sounds like a great idea to me. For it to become a “national” day it requires an act of congress. I don’t mind celebrating it anyway.
But, what about junk food? When did this start to come into our lives? Well, this coincides with the advent of packaged foods throughout the late 1900s. Of course, for decades, home-cooked meals were still the standard. However, after WW2, junk food really started to take off.
The population was traveling more and eating out more, and this resulted in fast food chains and the frozen food aisle really taking off. There were so many different foods for people to choose from. However, it was not until the 1970s that junk food started to get a bad name. This was when microbiologist, Michael Jacobson, actually coined the phrase. His aim was to try and curb our appetite for high preservative, high salt, and high sugar foods, which we were eating at a worrying rate.
Since then, there has been more knowledge and information about junk food, and a lot of food manufacturers have tried to make healthy versions of the junk food that we love the most! Nevertheless, if you have junk food now and again yet you generally maintain a healthy diet, it should not do you any harm! After all, we all deserve a treat now and again, right?
How to celebrate Junk Food Day
Celebrate this wonderful day by eating any sweet or salty treats you want! Bake cupcakes, make cookies, heat up some popcorn, buy some of your favorite candies. Invite friends over and have them bring in their favorites and make a junk food buffet and spend the rest of the day watching movies. You can always go get some fast food for fun. Take a cheat day from your diet and have dessert for dinner.
Consider trying some junk foods from other countries. Japan has a particular talent for making fun candy that you have to mix together. Look online to see if you can order special treats for the day. To name a few for you Korea has Cheong Woo Pumpkin Candy.
The Ukraine has Mr. Fizzy, a small hard candy that fizzes in your mouth. Columbia has Jet chocolates, a package of chocolates that also comes with a dinosaur sticker. Japan has Unican Mikita Melon Milk candy, a chewy candy with melon flavor. In Spain they have Violetas, sugar coated natural violets. In Poland they have a crunchy wafer-chocolate bar called Prince Polo made by Olza.
Another way that you can celebrate junk food is by creating your own versions of your favorite snacks. For example, instead of heading down to KFC, why not try making your own southern fried chicken? There are lots of great recipes online for junk food nowadays. In fact, you will see that there are some weird and wonderful creations, including different and unusual burger recipes and much more!
You may also want to decide to spend Junk Food Day with your friends. Why not host a junk food party? You can tell your friends that everyone has to bring carby and fatty foods. There are no green leafy foods allowed! Enjoy the day and indulge together. After all, it’s not like it is something that we all get to do all of the time, is it? So, you may as well make the most of it and indulge in those naughty foods. We won’t tell anyone!

National Moon Walk Day/Moon Day
Every once in a while, the human race achieves something truly remarkable, and Moon Day celebrates the occasion when we first left footsteps upon our nearest neighbour.
It’s probably best to gloss quietly over how long it is since the last visitors landed there, but that’s no reason to skimp on the celebrations. After all, there’ll never be a better excuse to launch firework rockets over your neighbourhood and dress up in a tinfoil suit with a fishbowl on your head. Alternatively, you might prefer to drag a telescope out into the garden, or maybe sit in a circle howling like wolves as the moon rises.
Be careful who you invite to your Moon Day party, though, as there’s bound to be one guest who insists the party is not really happening and that you are faking the hot dogs and beer in a film studio somewhere in Nevada.
Learn about Moon Day
Neil Armstrong became the first man to step down onto the cratered surface of the moon and he said the following words:
“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
These are words that pretty much everyone around the world is familiar with!
When this happened, it was one of the most monumental occasions in our history. On Moon Day, we celebrate the historic landing on the moon that occurred on the 20th of July in 1969. We also take the time to consider the monumental effort that it takes in order to get a space program off the ground. You may have thought that we would have made millions of space expeditions since then, but it simply is not that easy!
On Moon Day, we take the time to remember the profound and quirky moments in space that resulted in the United States being the first country to have their flag planted on the moon. This is definitely something to be proud of!
History of Moon Day
In order to understand the history of Moon Day, we first need to understand the history of such space expeditions. On the 25th of May in 1969, it was announced by John F. Kennedy, who was president at the time, that the Apollo space program would start. This initiated NASA’s work on a manned lunar landing. He stated that it was his plant to make sure that there was an American on the Moon by the end of the decade.
After this, Americans were treated to the very first television images of the surface of the moon. This was possible because images were transmitted by Ranger 7, which was NASA’s unmanned probe. Americans were then able to watch as Apollo 8 repeated its orbit ten times around the moon. This was the first manned flight.
The historic first took place when Apollo 11 landed on the moon for the first time. The world held its breath when three men became the first humans to step onto the surface of the moon. However, it was not all systems go, as NASA ended their Apollo program with Apollo 17. This was the final Moon landing mission, which happened in 1972.
However, in recent times, we have started to see more space programs initiated, so we could start to see more space activity from now on. This has been made possible because NASA has partnered with commercial companies in order to ensure that there is the funding needed to keep these projects going.
SpaceX is a prime example. Owned by Elon Musk, this company designs manufactures and launches advanced spacecraft and rockets. Their aim is to colonize Mars, and we have seen a lot of incredible innovations that they have brought to the fore. If you do not know a lot about this, we recommend using some of your time on Moon Day to find out more.
How to celebrate Moon Day
There are a number of different ways that you can celebrate Moon Day. One of the best ways to do so is to head to your local planetarium. This is the best way to get up close and personal with the moon. All you need to do is a quick search online to find the nearest planetarium in your area.
These are doomed theaters, which come complete with huge telescopes, enabling you to see all of the incredible objects in the sky that you cannot see with the naked eye. This will encourage you to learn more about the universe. It really is an educational, unique, and exciting experience. There is so much to learn!
Another way to celebrate Moon Day is by watching a film about landing on the moon. There have been a number of different films and movies that have been created about this incredible event, so we definitely recommend checking some of them out. The obvious place to start is with Apollo 11.
This film was directed by Todd Douglass Miller, usually powerful visuals to retell the story of man’s first trip to the moon. This includes images such as Neil Armstrong being reflected in Buzz Aldrin’s helmet, the American flag being planted on the lunar surface, and the blast-off moment. You may think that this is simply going to be another remake of a story that you have heard about plenty of times, but it is more than this.
It actually uses sound and never-before-seen footage from the mission, which has somehow been scanned and restored. This means you get to enjoy the occasion from a whole new perspective, which is incredibly interesting to say the least.
There are a number of other interesting films about landing on the moon. Another one to consider is The Dish, which was released back in 2000. Although a true story, it does have a bit of fiction mixed in as well. It tells the story of how an Australian observatory played a critical role in ensuring everyone around the globe would be able to watch the first steps that humankind took on the moon. Other movies to consider include First Man, The Last Man on the Moon, and For All Mankind.
Aside from the suggestions we have already mentioned, why not see if there are any astronomy clubs in your local area? If so, there are bound to be some events that are going on for Moon Day. You will have the perfect opportunity to enjoy a discussion with people who share the same passion. If you do not have an astronomy club in your area, do a bit of digging online to see if you can unearth any interesting forums where you will be able to engage in discussions with people who are passionate about astronomy. We are sure that a lot of people will also be posting on social media on Moon Day, so why not get involved in the discussion and share your own opinions as well?

History of National Ice Cream Day
We have President Reagan to thank for National Ice Cream Day. He wanted to commemorate the treat that more than 90 percent of the population in the United States enjoy, and so he decided he would decree a day for ice cream.
He did so in 1984. Doing this actually ended up glorifying the dairy industry in the United States, and so it probably does not come as any surprise for you to learn that Ameircans eat more gallons of ice cream per year than anywhere else in the world.
In fact, they eat 23 gallons per annum to be precise. That’s a lot of ice cream, right? Reagan even created an Ice Cream month because he loved it so much. He described it as a wholesome and nutritious food that the vast majority of the United States loved.
And, it is not only the United States that love their ice cream. This is a dessert that is enjoyed all over the world.
We also need to understand the history of this incredible dessert. Ice cream is one of the oldest types of desserts. It is believed that the history of ice cream probably started in Iran’s Achaemenid Empire, in roughly 500BC.
This is when different flavors were combined with ice in order to create treats to enjoy during the summer months. In 400C, the Persians created a special chilled food, which was a mix of vermicelli and rose water, which was served to the Royals during the summer months.
The ice was mixed with fruits, saffron, and a number of other flavors. Bastani Sonnati is now the most popular type of Persian ice cream.
This is a type of Iranian ice cream that is made from pistachios, vanilla, saffron, rose water, sugar, eggs, and milk. It also often has frozen flakes of clotted cream inside. It’s a real treat!

Why was ice cream once considered a luxury item?
Ice cream required rare ingredients like ice and sugar, making it an expensive treat in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Only the wealthy, like European royalty, could afford it. Advances in refrigeration and mass production in the 19th century made it widely accessible.
What’s the story behind ice cream trucks?
Ice cream trucks originated in the 1920s when Harry Burt, an ice cream pioneer, added bells to his trucks to attract customers.
These trucks introduced a new way to deliver frozen treats directly to neighborhoods. Today, the nostalgic jingle of an ice cream truck still signals happiness on summer days.

The lake supports fishing, boating, and drinking water for hundreds of thousands of people, plus many plants and animals.
Folks leave feeling more tied to this powerful body of water and eager to keep it clean and strong for everyone.
How to Celebrate Lake Superior Day
Here are some fun and easy ways to honor Lake Superior Day:
Paddle on the Water
Rent a paddleboard or kayak and explore the water up close. Gliding over clear waves gives you a fresh view of the lake and a peaceful break from daily noise.
Many spots offer rentals and lessons, so beginners are always welcome. It’s a great way to get active and enjoy nature without needing much gear.
Help Clean the Shore
Another simple but powerful choice is to take part in a cleanup. Join a group or go on your own with a bag in hand.
Even picking up a few pieces of trash makes a big difference for birds, fish, and people. Many local groups organize these efforts near parks and beaches during the event.

Lastly, join a guided nature walk. Trails near the lake offer stunning views of cliffs, forests, and waterfalls. Guides often point out plants, birds, and unique rock features you might overlook.
It’s a relaxed way to spend time outdoors while learning more about the land around the water.
History of Lake Superior Day
Lake Superior Day began in the early 1990s. A small group in Thunder Bay, Ontario, came up with the idea. They wanted a special day to recognize the lake’s importance to nearby towns, wildlife, and water users.
Their goal was simple: bring attention to the lake’s value and inspire people to protect it. They picked the third Sunday in July as the time to celebrate. That tradition still continues today.
Later, the event grew. Bob Browne, a lake advocate from Superior, Wisconsin, helped revive the idea in the early 2000s. He worked with a binational group that focused on protecting the lake and its resources. Thanks to their efforts, the celebration spread to other areas in the Lake Superior region.
Today, communities across Ontario, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin take part. Each town plans its own activities, but the goal stays the same, honor and protect the world’s largest freshwater lake by surface area.
The day helps people learn how much the lake supports everyday life. It provides water, food, recreation, and jobs.
More than just a fun event, it brings people together around one shared goal: caring for a natural treasure that gives so much in return.

National Caviar Day, celebrated every July 18th, is quite a fancy affair! This day is all about indulging in the luxurious treat of caviar, known for its rich flavor and creamy texture.
The tradition of enjoying caviar dates back to ancient Persia, making it a delicacy with a history. People around the globe mark this day by diving into the world of caviar. By doing so, they explore its various types, from the prestigious Beluga to the nutty Osetra and even the intensely flavorful Sevruga.
But how did National Caviar Day come to be, you ask? Let’s say it’s a day that has grown in popularity, much like the price of caviar itself. After the ban on Sturgeon fishing in 1906 to protect these precious fish, the price of caviar skyrocketed.
By the 1960s, caviar had become synonymous with elegance and luxury. Nowadays, the day celebrates all kinds of caviar, not just the ones from sturgeons but also ‘imposters’ like salmon and trout roe, inviting everyone to feast like kings and billionaires, if only for a day.
From the royal courts of the United Kingdom, which declared all sturgeon to be royal property in 1324, to become North America’s major caviar producer in the 1800s, caviar has had quite the journey.
The day also highlights the need for sustainable fishing practices following Russia’s 2008 decision to suspend wild sturgeon fishing to let the population replenish.
