Would have been a great love story about finding love in unexpected places or something. Accepting your true self

Then Zero and Kaname could realize that their whole weird love triangle thing was a cover up for their attraction to each other. Obviously the main plot would be about Yuki coming out and accepting herself for what she truly is

Would have gone great with her character arc. Then Zero and Kaname fucking nasty in the background would be a fun little side plot because both of them are terrible and way too awful for anyone but each other.

Yuki deserves better than both of them, the weirdo freaks that they are

Technically rewatching but I was really not paying attention the first time and it was years ago at this point. Did remember the incest correctly tho 💀 Was sort of hoping I imagined it

If anyone is curious about my thoughts, there aren’t really many especially since right now I’m sleepy but overall I have one main issue which is all I’m gonna talk about since it has a lot of supporting materials apparently.

I find it interesting how the anime establishes a very clear cycle of abuse. Yuki’s parents were siblings and since young she has been told to be the same way. In fact, the same thing was taught to Kaname since he brings this up with her. “We’ll be like mother and father”

Yet throughout the whole anime, I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop. Expecting a scene where Kaname’s twisted view of himself and his peers and especially Yuki’s clashing perspective get brought up and resolved.

But the shoe doesn’t drop. The shoe keeps making sin waves or maybe the graph has an asymptote at ground level. And so now I’m just left wondering: why was Yuki’s first reaction to be grossed out and second reaction (Iirc when talking with Aido) to say that she’s lived for a long time as a human — seemingly to conclude that the way vampire society “does things” doesn’t resonate with her — if it’s not going to go somewhere?

The author just can’t seem to make up her mind on whether incest is right or not, or at the very least knows it’s not so has to try to reason it out and accidentally showing exactly why it’s not.

Why do I say that both roads lead to the same conclusion? Outside of the aforementioned pattern of incest in the vampire families, there’s also the fact that Kaname (and really all the actual main characters) view vampirism as some sick act. Zero is the most prominent voice supporting that idea but Kaname’s dialogue when clarifying Yuki’s past is all sorts of revealing. “What’s wrong with brother and sister lovers? It’s inhumane? We ARENT humane anyway. We’re not even human. We’re monsters!”

From our perspective as the audience, we know full well that all the vampires have rich inner lives burdened with trauma and pressure. It is incorrect to say they’re not human. So Kaname’s words are a direct contradiction of the reality we see. This should prove that those words are incorrect in their entirety. And imo, it shows that those words come from a place of self hatred and loathing. Something that, I hope I’m not wrong or downplaying, can come as result of incest — which yes the number one reason incest is bad is because of the psychological trauma. Make no mistake, there is nothing anyone can say to change my mind when I say Yuki and Kaname are victims.

It just sucks that the author/mangaka, from posts I’ve read this past hour talking about the ending, doesn’t seem to realize that.

Or maybe she does??? Because she very clearly has written the main character to have second doubts about the whole ordeal. Imo, only choosing to leave with Kaname because he is her family and he needs her. Zero and her dad can take care of themselves and of each other. On the other hand, Kaname truly has no one close enough because his closest friends cannot imagine being his friends .

So maybe I’m misinterpreting something, maybe it’s wishful thinking so that the series complies with my world view, but under better circumstances and less weight placed on her shoulders, Yuki would’ve chosen to stay at the academy and, frankly, Yuki would’ve chosen Zero. Why else would her sentence/question be finished/answered for her when her uncle says “yell out the name of the person you love”

All that said, I can’t help this nagging feeling that this wasn’t the intention at all. The author/mangaka set out to write a compelling story and just like any good teenage drama, the best way is indecision. I fear It wasn’t meant as a reprimand at all, instead a forbidden, “I want to but society” (get it?? joker colors?? Like the meme??)

And just to throw this in there, it’s weird how Yuki and Kaname’s parallels, Zero and Ichiro, behave. Like those two were also too close and reliant on each other for me not to believe that the author just likes this stuff. Especially ending it with Zero drinking Ichiro’s blood. This is gonna lead me down a whole rant about how it doesn’t even make sense with the plot so I’ll let it rest here.

It sucks too because Yuki’s own mother wants to remove her from this cycle of abuse, wants to give her a normal life and one can only assume a normal life implies one without incest. One where it doesn’t matter who she marries.

And now you start to notice these situations reflecting real stories and you notice the role eugenics plays.

But you know that’s not the intention bc apparently the manga continues on and Kaname becomes a terrible person?? The two have sex?? Yuki becomes pregnant???

But I guess at least 🙄 she and Zero somewhere end up together and the story still concludes that Kaname needed to live as a human too. It’s like a full circle moment expect IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE IMPACTFUL had they come to the realization that they already are human and that to heal they need to establish who they are on their own. Same for the hunter twins.

the relationship between yuki and zero is extremely delicate and complicated but to sit there and say “well they’re adopted so it’s basically as bad as yuki and kaname” is just a blatant misunderstanding of everything. you can live in close proximity to anyone and never see them as family. it becomes difficult to see someone as family when they act the way zero does. when it comes to legality, yuki and zero are NOT siblings. kaien is legally yukis father while legally being zero’s guardian. guardian and parent is NOT the same thing. it’s a similar role yes and there isn’t a lot distinguishing them but the acceptance of that guardian as a parent. because zero never accepted kaiens parental role, zero and yuki don’t have a pseudo-incest relationship. due to zero’s traumatic ass childhood he NEVER EVER seen yuki as a sister. she was always a friend in his head it was a friendship-lover relationship. they literally spend at the max 3-4 years together before she runs off with kaname. it was NEVER a sibling love EVER. they’re drawn looking younger but zero is 13 when his family is killed. story starts when he’s 16-17. if you yourself can consider someone a sibling that early if they act like zero that’s a you thing. ON THE OTHER HAND you get kaname. he’s 10,000 years old and when he’s found. he’s a literal ancestor of yuki and her parents. he is one of the very FIRST pure blood vampires ever. he’s one of the first and founders of the kuran bloodline. he goes into a very long sleep (10,000 years) and is awoken by his descendants juri and haruka yk yukis parents. the kuran family is the most incest filled families of the 7 pure blood families. rido is probably the first of the kurans to actually develop a relationship with another pure blood family. this is AFTER his obsession with his sister juri is forced to ‘end’ because she mates with her other brother haruka. rido chooses shizuka but never marries her. he has a kid with an aristocrat vampire and yeah that happens. i ain’t explaining. anyways juri and haruka have a son that they name after their ancestor kaname, after they get married. when rido finds out he takes that baby and uses his blood to resurrect a young looking 10,000 year old ancestor the original kaname kuran. with everything kanames body isn’t complete so to keep her son alive basically, the body is kind of reset into a baby. she takes care of kaname as if he were her son. again he is NOT the son of juri and haruka their son is dead. but she does the same thing she did with yuki, and seals away kanames memories of the last 10,000 years. unlike yukis memory seal or wtv, kanames is much much weaker. by the time yuki is born he’s starting to gain back his memories. and because rido is a fucking freak, juri tries to protect yuki by making her existence unknown to everyone. and the story goes from there if rido finding out and trying to take yuki and yeah. that’s that. so obviously by the time of the first episode kaname is almost completely aware of his relationship to yuki. he knows he’s one of the first of the kuran bloodline, he knows what juri and haruka did and that he was there just so they can feel like their son didn’t die. and he knows yuki was never aware of his actual relationship to her. he leaves her to kaien because he was friends with kaien when he was still a hunter. he knows what kaien is capable of doing as well as his wants. and for the years following kaname proceeds to in a way groom yuki back into her vampire self for years. because he’s insane. this comes with a lot of manipulation and ‘shielding’ when he was only meant to protect her from ridos weird ass.

the main issue i have with kanames story is that he knows everything like he knows everything about yuki and keeps it from her. yuki and zero grow together. their manipulation is very very different. one uses his manipulation to get what he wants from yuki while the other manipulates himself and her into pushing them away from eachother. zero really does protect yuki. okay yeah yuki should’ve had that choice but her story literally would not make sense or allow that to happen. yeah it’s wrong yes i hate it but i’d truly rather be with someone that doesn’t manipulate me with an ulterior motive. which was exactly what kaname did. he did it for his own benefit. zero wanted to fucking die for years and did manipulate yuki so that when he did die she would be able to move on with her life. at the end of the story that’s exactly what the fuck happens. zero dies for her and she lives 1000 years before resurrecting kaname and dying for him. zero worries about her fully her well being her future like everything and kaname is selfish. it’s for his personal gain and he disguises it as “for yuki” when it’s not for her. could the story have been done without incest yes obviously but it came out in 2008. i don’t know if you know anything about vampires in 08 but the story would’ve seemed like a copy of twilight. i mean you read/watch twilight and it is almost exactly alike minus the incest. vampire knight is almost exactly like twilight but has more reason backing why one of the love interest makes sense and is better than the other. so when it comes down to it.

i can make a lot of excuses abt why they’re the better option for yuki and bella but it mostly comes down to what drives them to do the shit they do. and for the 2 it is almost always a selfish reason and idk bro that doesn’t sit right with me. shit goes hand in hand honestly and if you chose kaname or edward. you’re wrong 💗
