It’s always slightly uncanny to have my work installed in the station closest to my home. Always slightly a bit of a shock when I pass it. #LabradorParkMRT “Commissioned by the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit system’s #CircleLine Art project, #Withoutwhich / #Wouldhavebeen / #Impossible is a nine-meter tall structure covered with a graphic pattern and set in the middle of the Labrador Park MRT train station platform. Composed of colored #circles in three different hues and sizes spread across a surface in a seemingly random method, Without which / Would have been / Impossible resembles the configurations found in #HemanChong’s Surfacing project. But here the motif is derived from a #microscopic view of a rock #fragment the artist found at the #park, and is meant to highlight #LabradorPark as the last surviving rocky sea cliff in #Singapore. This relation to nature is underscored by the addition of a #haiku text next to a dot pattern. Borrowing one of poetry’s most minimal forms, Chong’s haiku — a mere seven words — more closely resembles a continuous sentence rather than separate thoughts, and expertly hovers between multiple #meanings. Situated within a #publiccontext, Without which / Would have been / Impossible is a meditation on #speculativeconditions — and a #monument to #uncertainty. Interested in activating the internal #monologues that can occur when #commuters #confront the work, Chong’s #proposition offers new ways to think about monuments and #language in the context of #publicspace.” Text by @amandaleekoe #AmandaLeeKoe (at Labrador Park MRT Station) https://www.instagram.com/p/CT7XhJhJAZu/?utm_medium=tumblr
