@esotolkienweek day three | skies, demand | velindo
Wéland (Smith): Eriol asks innocently is not Aulë him that we call Wéland and they (Rúmil?) laughing says no and tells of Velindo or Gwilion the fay — one of Aulë’s folk who was sent by Aulë into the world to fetch at his need some of the gold heavy red gold of the dwarves.
There his pride swelled by reason of the amazement of men and dwarves at his skill; and he never returned to Aulë but set up on his own — and was once famous far and wide but with the fading of the fairies his power has waned.
He was not wicked but very vain — Eriol touches on the Bodvildr legend [in which Wéland escapes the captivity of the cruel king Niðhad and elopes with his daughter by flying away on invented wings] and Rúmil says that if it is true it shows the vanity of Wéland (Niðhad must be a dwarf king).
Notes: This character, while deeply obscure, is also deeply charming to me! In notes unearthed only in Parma Eldalambaron, Tolkien gives two Arda versions of the Old English smith-legend Wéland (written probably around the time of The Book of Lost Tales): one where Wéland is a proto-Fëanor figure (with the original myth’s hard edges rounded off), and another where he is a servant of Aulë who goes rogue. Since Fëanor, of course, has an integral role in the later legendarium, I choose to adapt Velindo into my wider Silmverse instead. I envision him as something of a sixth wizard, the Red Wizard, who flies around on invented wings and has a dwarven wife he stole away from a wicked king! As his escapades were not sanctioned by Aulë, he doesn’t have to follow the rules of the Istari, and is probably happy in his own corner of Middle-earth, living alongside his master’s children among one of the more obscure dwarven clans.

Go away thought, I’m too busy to entertain you. “Q is basically gay Weland the Smith,” keeps ringing in my ears. Wonder if this makes Bond a Beowulf? He’s Scottish after all, I’m not too sure if all Anglos ended up becoming Scots, and if this could also mean Q also has Scottish blood in him?
for reference, Weland is a dangerous and vengeful smith when provoked, he’s made Beowulf’s armour and was very capable of doing cruel things, tho he sh-gged girls ...
━━╋⊂ Seven of Swords - what is the worst instance of your character being manipulative? Hadeon/Tziska/Weland
Hadeon blackmailed a priestess and her bodyguard into ensuring said priestess would not interfere with his own charge. He was never above blackmail and mild manipulation, despite thinking of himself as a man of the Light. He also manipulated his charge from time to time into behaving appropriately when she was a bit of a rebel.
Tziska is rarely manipulative; she’s straightforward in most cases. She did egg her little brother on into jumping into the fjord which gave him a near deadly case of pneumonia though.
Weland manipulated a dying woman into having her soul stored in a soulstone without her consent. To this day, she hates him for it.

I commissioned @chaoticallywickedart on Instagram to draw Weland the Smith for me. Despite doing some terrible things, I felt a connection to the god and have grown attached to him. This is how he appears in my mind.
The setting is in the winter because in Anglo-Saxon literature, winter was often used as an analogy for depression. When people were at their worst, when they were sad, or lost, scenes of winter were often described. I wanted that idea and theme to carry here. Weland was permanently disabled and held captive. He was in a dark place.
But when he gains his wings (the manner he does so varies from the sources. Since he's a smith, I like the idea that he built them), he finds hope in escape. In here, he's just finished his wings and he's looking up to the sky, ready to reclaim his freedom and leave this part of his life behind.
The detailed designs are influenced and taken from existing Anglo-Saxon historical art.
