I just need to vent about this most overused trope. I read a lot of manga, manhua, web comics, etc. and especially for the Chinese variety, this trope can be found in 99% of romance comics. It annoys me because
1.) It’s really unfair to the men in the story. I don’t know if this is a true-to-life cultural thing, or if it’s just a cultural idealization of how a woman should be, but the definition of a pervert is a sexual deviant, not a person who enjoys sex. All humans, including human females, enjoy sex. All humans are sexual beings. It’s how children are made, and it’s how we bond with the ones we love. It really makes no sense how even when the characters are married, the wife will call the husband a pervert any time he flirts with her. Ridiculous.
2.) It perpetuates the stereotype that women are not/should not be sexual beings. Now, I am not one to to criticize a story for not being PC—far from it, I welcome non-PC themes in story telling because I don’t believe stories should be censored to fit what society finds acceptable. But when a trope like this is found in literally 99% manga and webcomics, it’s a problem. Women constantly denying their own sexuality and pretending it doesn’t exist really adds nothing to the majority of stories I see it in except to serve as “comedic relief” which isn’t really funny.
Side note, another annoyingly overused trope is “girl who doesn’t realize she’s fallen in love.” I mean, I realize there are people out there with low EQ who honestly don’t recognize when this happens to them, but it’s not the majority. Most people know right away when they like someone. It would be refreshing to read a story of a girl who doesn’t take 5893895 chapters to realize she’s attracted to someone and doesn’t have to ask the obligatory, “why is my heart beating so fast?” >_>
