Visual Typing - MBTI Head Shapes
After collecting more evidence over the past two years here is an updated chart of the different head/face shapes for the MBTI types.
the general markers:
1. Introverts have thin faces, extroverts have wide faces (the only exception being xSTJs, more on that later), scientific studies about this:
- https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0191886916309096
2. xxTPs have very rectangular faces with pronounced square chins. ExTPs in particular are prone to bulldog-like underbites, giving a stereotypically masculine appearance
3. xxFJs have smaller underveloped jaws with small chins, giving a triangular/ heart-shape, feminine appearance
just a hypothesis but 2. and 3. are probably related to testosterone-influence during embryonic development hence the correlation for both appearance and gendered character traits (feeling vs thinking, emotion vs ratio)
4. *for some reason if someone has this specific long jaw misalignment it -has- to be a male ISFJs (photo example before and after lefort 1 jaw surgery). (like, not -all- male ISFJs have it, but if someone has it you can bet itâs an ISFJ). havenât seen this in INFJs or in female ISFJs yet
5. Te/Fi-users have average jaw sizes and therefore go more into the circle/oval direction. xSTJs in particular often have âegg-shapeâ heads. xNTJs look somehow more triangular than their Si/Ne-counterparts but still more egg-ish than xxFJs.
behold, an xSTJ:
6. for why ISTJ and ESTJ are âswitchedâ in head width and they are the only MBTI pair that is an exception from the I/E-width-rule I only have this half-baked explanation that itâs not about introversion/extroversion in a social sense but more in a âopenness to sensationsâ sense that ESTJs with their inf Fi are more stubborn and actually more withdrawn than ISTJs(??)
7. ENTJs have the most pronounced foreheads youâve ever seen
8. fat can disguise the head shape, but not always. e.g. see those two examples of ExFJs before and after weightloss. the chin is still sharp and triangular even when overweight:
meanwhile the rectangle shape of this ISTP only becomes visible with lower body fat:
9. overdeveloped masseter muscles can distract from the chin shape. e.g. take this picture of young INFP Brad Pitt. one could easily fall into the trap thinking he has an IxTP head shape when in reality his chin has a normal Te-user size and itâs just his masseter muscles distracting from the shape. the curved indentations between chin and muscle are a good clue. (compare it to pictures of him being older with less pronounced masseter muscles, then his real chin shape is more obvious)
comparing with ISTP Sigourney Weaver, her rectangle head shape is visible during all ages regardless of muscle mass
as a novice those differences can be hard to track. train your eye by observing photos of people during different age stages, try to imagine the face without any soft tissue and bone only.
Instinctual Variants; Visual (and vibes)Typing:
How to spot an ISFP
A few years ago, I made a post about how the cognitive functions manifest in our behaviour and now Iâm going to expand on that and give a more detailed, visually accompanied overview for each type, now for the ISFP.
For the purpose of this guide, I took a look at this interview with the Canadian figure skaters Tessa Virtue (an ISFP) and Scott Moir (an ESFJ). You can find the links to other type spotting guides below which I will update over time when new guides are being added.
The dominant and the auxiliary cognitive functions that people use are those that are the ones that are the most noticeable in the quality of their gaze, in their speech style, in their facial expressions, and their whole general demeanour, and so these are the ones that I will be focussing on here. In case of an ISFP, these are Fi and Se. Due to this combination, ISFPs tend to be very grounded in their physical reality and focused on how everything relates to them personally. I always say that there are two base types of ISFPs: the quirky mad-people and the ice queens/kings. Fundamentally, they are not that different from each other, they just radiate a different kind of energy as the former are more upbeat and outgoing (see for example Scottish actress Karen Gillan) than those like Tessa Virtue who belong to the latter, more reserved category.
When I say âice queenâ, I donât mean that ISFPs are cold-hearted, not at all. Itâs just they are the least emotive of all the types. Their strongest function is Fi and so their emotional focus is directed inwards. They are constantly listening to themselves about how this makes them feel and how they relate to that, so there is no need to actively express their feelings outwardly. Interestingly, they are still completely unable to hide their true emotions. Itâs like they are oozing out of them unintentionally. The gif above actually shows the difference between an Fi-dom and an Fe-dom very nicely: Scott Moir, as an ESFJ, is staring at her talking with a neutral face, but as soon as she makes eye contact, a reassuring smile appears on his face that immediately fades as soon as she looks away, while her expression does not change at all. Thatâs the key difference between the two feeling functions: his smile is meant for her and is not a true representation of his feelings, while her smile is genuinely felt. She does constantly look for other peopleâs reactions, but she does not adapt her behaviour to other people like Scott Moir does.Â
What the second gif also shows very nicely is her auxiliary Se. She takes everything in that is happening around her, but she has a singular focus. This is what sets ISFPs apart from INFPs who share the ISFPâs dominant Fi. Due to high Se, the ISFPâs gaze is intense and has a clear direction. In a similar gist, ISFPs are often very well-composed and are a steady presence in the room that donât get lost inside their own heads as much as INFPs. When they gesticulate, the movement of their hands is precise and has a concrete direction just like their gaze, while high Ne of an INFP would lead to gestures that are all over the place. Not all, but quite a number of ISFPs (along with the other SP types) also develop a taste for clothes that are a bit out of the ordinary.Â
When it comes to speech patterns, ISFPs are typically very straightforward in their communication. No infinitely long sentences, no sudden conceptual leaps or aborted sentences, no stutter-like word repetitions, no blatant grammatical errors (intuitive types, by contrast, are typically guilty of at least one or two of these), but ISFPs do often choose their words very carefully and make relatively long and frequent pauses in their speech, that they usually donât fill with âuhmâ, which is rather typical for the types on the Se/Ni axis. To illustrate that, here a little excerpt from the interview regarding the (then) upcoming Olympics:
Itâs hard to imagine ... failure at this point because if if weâre able to take the ice in Pyeongchang and feel like ... we did everything we possibly could ... to set ourselves up for that moment ... that has ... that has to be enough. [...] What was most disheartening about that was ... we love skating and ... we want ... other people ... to feel the same way ... and when any kind of ... controversy comes into it ... which is natural in a subjective sport ... uhm ... you know, it it does sort of tarnish it.Â
Other How to spot type XY guides so far: INFJ, ENFJ, INTP, ESFJ
Typing IVâs based on resting face
Sp/sx, Sx/sp: Resting bitch face. Iâve never noticed another resting face for So blinds to be just as common, unless interacting with their people/passions. But even then not as emotive as the others.Â
So/sp, Sp/so: Resting bored face. Also commonly has a complete âblankâ and âopenâ look compared to the others (i.e. eyes alert, neither positive nor negative emotions on the face, empty kind of look). Emotive when interacting with others but otherwise the above usually stands true.
Sx/so, So/sx: Basically whatever current emotion theyâre feeling is how their face is usually resting (i.e. happy, sad, etc). Most emotive with or without people around. Also commonly has a deer-caught-in-the-headlights look to them imo.Â

what are your thoughts on typing people by vultology? do you think it has any credibility? Iâve come across sources that type people based on reading their facial expressions, eye movements, gestures, etc. do you think these can indicate cognitive patterns as well or do you think the correlation is not that strong enough?
I don't think the correlation is strong enough. It also doesn't take into account that some people are more aware of nonverbal communication and might move in ways that conceal their true personality. Body language is most obvious during social interaction and many people express themselves based on their social mask.
What is your definition of "personality" exactly? Shouldn't your measurement of personality be directly and logically tied to your definition? As far as I know, no reputable scholar of personality would accept body language as a primary definition or measurement of it.
thank you so much for answering to my questions, i followed the blogs you mentioned here on tumblr and i'll go take a look around the web for the enneagram! as for my last ask, i think i worded it wrong, but yes, i was refering to the visual typing about mbti and the first instinctual variant... are you ok with visual typing me? only if you want, of course, i donât want to bother you too much, if you don't want that's totally fine with me
sure, you can send me a selfie through my dms. just make sure that it's
high definition. even phone cameras have pretty decent quality so there is no excuse for a grainy or blurry one
no over/underexposure. natural lighting is best
make sure the angle isn't too low/too high. it should be on eye level
keep your hair out of your face (it's best to tie it up) and look straight at the camera
if you have bangs, push them back (itâs easier if i can see your eyebrows)
don't smile, relax your face muscles
kinda like when you have to take a passport photo
it's best if you also send a second one with a close up of your eyes + eyebrows. again, relax the muscles around your eyes!
no make-up, no filters
if you wear glasses, take them off
