Vil can always tell who the real Cater is, between him and his clones.
Most people wouldn’t be able to. Cater’s clones are identical to him, down to the perfected micro-expressions in their faces. But that’s just it—his clones have perfected his mask, the face that he defaults to in public. Around Vil, however, Cater's been letting the mask falter more and more. It's how he got Vil to fall in love with him, after all. Now, it's gotten harder for him to keep his mask up in the way that he used to. And that makes all the difference.
The real Cater is the one whose eyes have a bit too much longing in them. The one whose lips quirk up in a smile that really does reach his eyes when he sees Vil. And when he gets flustered, or embarrassed, it isn’t in that cammable, cute way. It’s a little bit desperate, like he doesn’t know what to do with himself when the correct expression to make isn't immediately obvious. He can't help it. He just can't keep his mask intact around Vil, even if he tries.
As an actor, micro-expressions have always been Vil’s specialty. And now, Cater Diamond is also his specialty. The imperfect Cater, the one who broke through his defenses and had his own defenses broken in turn. Vil will always recognize him.

forever glad to have pulled vil’s birthday jacket card, because it means that frequently, the first thing I hear when I open twst is vil saying cater’s name.
(I love when characters say each others’ names)
(this dialogue also means so much to me btw. it is a standard fixture in all my vilkei headcanons, because to me, it marks the moment when cater’s gift to vil became more personal and less focused on what was expensive and/or trendy. cater got vil a gift that was uniquely meaningful to him, knowing that vil considers the shaftlands home. and it stuck with vil enough for him to have it as a line of dialogue. look at him bringing up cater of his own volition, with a smile on his face!)
